Biggest haul of ration rice in T.N. for 2025 made in Madurai

The Hindu08-08-2025
In the biggest haul of ration rice in the State in 2025, Madurai unit of Civil Supplies -Crime Investigation Department seized around 55 tonnes of ration rice illegally hoarded in a godown here.
The seizure made last week has blown the lid off an organised gang operating in different districts for collecting PDS rice and sell it as cattle/poultry feed.
The sleuths also seized four cargo vehicles, including three trucks and a pickup van, and arrested six persons from Madurai, Kumbakonam and Kovilpatti.
Based on a specific input received by its Superintendent of Police R. Srinivasa Perumal, a team of sleuths, including its Deputy Superintendent of Police and Inspector, rushed to the godown, functioning along a rice mill, and found several workers loading bags of rice in different cargo vehicles.
'Our officials alerted the Civil Supplies Flying Squad who inspected the site and confirmed that the goods belonged to public distribution system (PDS),' said Mr. Srinivasa Perumal.
The officials found that a total of 3,600 kg of PDS rice and also 51,300 kg of broken PDS rice stocked in the godown and also loaded in the vehicles.
The CS-CID officials arrested V. Meenakshi Sundaram, 35, of Madurai, who has been identified as the rice mill owner and vehicle owner and his partner C. Muthukannan, 26.
Besides, a rice collector A. Ramamoorthi of Kovilpatti and three drivers were arrested and sent to remand.
Investigation revealed that different districts have got different gangs that have been collecting PDS rice from the beneficiaries and stock them in different places before moving them in bulk quantity to the end user.
'We got the tip-off at the right time when the gang was trying to load them into vehicles for taking them to Dharapuram in Namakkal district,' the SP said.
He suspected that the huge quantity of PDS rice could have been collected over a period of one month.
'In order to hoodwink the flying squads and CS-CID teams, the gang has turned the rice into broken rice,' Mr. Srinivasa Perumal said.
He said that the CS-CID Inspector General of Police Rupesh Kumar Meena had instructed to prevent smuggling of ration rice in order to ensure that the free rice distributed through ration shops reached the targeted beneficiaries.
'The Government spends huge subsidy towards free distribution of ration rice with the intention that the poorest of the poor should get free rice so that there is no hunger,' the SP said.
However, the middlemen entice the poor people with paltry sum of money and deprive them of rice, thereby forcing the beneficiaries to pay more for buying rice from open market for the family.
The gang has a network of poultry units that buy the ration rice for as high as ₹23 per kg to feed the birds.
The accused were booked under Tamil Nadu Scheduled Commodities (Regulation of Distribution by Card System) Order, 1982, and under Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
The SP said that hunt for few more accused was under way.
He warned that such accused could get a maximum punishment of 7 years of jail and repeat offenders could be detained under the Goondas Act.
CS-CID could be alerted about smuggling of ration goods over toll-free number of 18005995950.

More trouble for NCP (SP) leader Eknath Khadse's son-in-law, Pune police book him for taking nude videos of woman

The Pune city police Friday booked Dr Pranjal Khewalkar, the son-in-law of former Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Eknath Khadse, for allegedly taking nude videos and photographs of a woman in his cell phone without her consent. Khewalkar, the husband of Khadse's daughter Rohini Khadse, the NCP (SP)'s women's wing chief, has been in jail after he was arrested along with four men and two women following a raid on July 27 on a flat in the Kharadi area where the police claimed a 'rave party' was underway. A police press release on Friday said the woman filed a complaint with the cyber police station that Khewalkar, between 2022 and 2025, allegedly took her nude photographs and videos at different locations without her consent and with the purpose of misusing them in the future. The police lodged a fresh FIR against Khewalkar at the cyber police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 77 (voyeurism) and provisions of the Information Technology Act. During the alleged rave party, the police claimed to have recovered 2.7 grams of substance suspected to be cocaine, 70 grams of substance suspected to be marijuana and other items, including ten cell phones, two cars, a hookah pot, liquor and beer bottles, all worth Rs 41,35,400, from the spot. Th FIR in that case was lodged against the accused at the Kharadi police station under sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act (COTPA). Khewalkar's lawyer then alleged that the police planted the contraband seized in this case for 'political' reasons and that drugs were recovered from his possession. The police said analysis of Khewalkar's mobile phone and laptop revealed multiple videos of his alleged obscene and objectionable acts with women during and after the parties. Rupali Chakankar, the chairperson of Maharashtra Women's Commission, wrote a letter to the Pune police to investigate the matter thoroughly. Khadse accused the Pune police of defaming his family by leaking private photos through a conspiracy after arresting his son-in-law.

Eknath Khadse's son-in-law booked for filming woman without consent

PUNE: Pranjal Khewalkar, son-in-law of senior NCP (SP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse, was on Friday booked in a fresh case for allegedly photographing and filming a woman in a compromising position without her consent. Representative image (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The first information report was registered at Pune's cyber police station under section 66E of the Information Technology Act and section 77 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to violation of privacy and digital exploitation. On July 27, Khewalkar was arrested along with six others when the Pune police busted an alleged rave party in the Kharadi area and seized cocaine, marijuana, liquor bottles and 10 mobile phones. He is currently in judicial custody. According to crime branch officials, the former minister's son-in-law was in a relationship with the woman whom he allegedly filmed and photographed without her consent. 'The incident took place recently and the complainant claims it was done under duress,' said a senior crime branch official, requesting not to be identified. Following the registration of the case on Friday, the state women's commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar reiterated claims made last week about Khewalkar's alleged involvement in a human trafficking racket. The new development could potentially expose 'one of the biggest sex scandals,' she said on Friday, citing the recovery of a large cache of objectionable photographs and videos from his mobile phone and laptop. Last week, while addressing a press conference, Chakankar had alleged based on a report from the police that Khewalkar lured migrant women to Pune on the pretext of offering them jobs, then exploited them. The police had seized multiple mobile phones, including from his Hadapsar residence, containing nude photographs and videos hidden in secure folders, she had said. According to Chakankar, a man identified as 'Aarush' played a key role in trapping the women and housemaids and sweepers were among the main targets. Some of the women were drugged and filmed and the recordings were later used for blackmailing them. Khewalkar too was seen in some of the videos recovered from the seized devices, which Chakankar said pointed to his connections with an organised human trafficking network with links in multiple locations, including Lonavala, Jalgaon, Mumbai and Goa. Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed they had submitted a detailed report on the alleged trafficking network to the women's commission. Responding to Chakankar's allegations, former minister Eknath Khadse said on Friday, 'She is speaking as though she herself is the investigating officer. Chakankar belongs to a political party – it is the police, not her, who should be giving out such information.'

Husband gets justice: Akhilesh sacks MLA for praising Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Pooja Pal was expelled from the party on Thursday, hours after she thanked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for 'delivering justice' in her husband's mur-der case and praised him for bringing in policies with zero tolerance against criminals. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said Ms Pooja, whose husband Raju Pal was shot dead by gangster Atiq Ah-med in 2005, was 'immediately expelled' from the party due to her engagement in 'anti-party activ-ities and serious indiscipline which continued despite prior warnings and caused significant harm to the party'. The expulsion created a political uproar with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state ac-cusing the opposition of being 'anti-Dalit'. In his statement in Hindi, Yadav said: 'She (Ms Pooja) is no longer permitted to participate in any par-ty programs and will not be invited to them in the future.' The development came hours after Ms Pooja thanked the Chief Minister for 'listening to her when no one else did' over her husband's murder. Former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal was shot dead on January 25, 2005, days after he married Ms Pooja. The murder, police said, was a result of political rivalry with gangster Atiq Ahmed's brother Ashraf, whom Raju had defeated in the 2004 bypoll to the Prayagraj West seat. In February 2023, Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder case, was shot dead in Prayagraj's Sulem Saray area. Days later, Atiq and Ashraf - both of whom were arrested - were shot dead by three men when they were being taken for a medical check-up in Prayagraj. Atiq was shot in the head from behind, nearly at point-blank range. Ashraf, too, was shot dead, as the murder was captured on camera. This came days after Atiq's son Asad was killed in an alleged encounter in Jhansi. All three men were later ar-rested.
