Jets to have officials at camp to reduce penalties, says coach Aaron Glenn

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets hope seeing more black-and-white stripes in training camp will result in fewer yellow flags during the season. HT Image Coach Aaron Glenn said Friday the team will often have officials at practice through the summer after the Jets, under the previous regime of coach Robert Saleh, led the NFL in penalties the last two seasons. New York rarely used officials during training camp practices last summer. Many NFL teams hire officials for at least some of their camp practices, giving players the opportunity to get used to how plays are called in a non-game environment. 'I want the officials here as much as possible and they know that,' Glenn said. "It's no secret that we were the most-penalized team in the league last year, so that's one of the things that I want to nip in the bud early — making sure that the discipline part of what we do, that we fix that now. 'You cannot win games in this league with an undisciplined team, so all the penalties that we had last year, we're knocking those things out.' Last season, the Jets were penalized 137 times, five more than Tennessee and Baltimore, and finished 5-12 — with Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas both fired in the middle of the season. In 2023, New York was called for 124 penalties, nine more than Cleveland and Dallas, and went 7-10. 'The officials are going to be here and we're going to knock that out, all right,' Glenn said. 'I will tell you this: We are going to knock these penalties out. We're going to understand that undisciplined teams do not win games.' Philadelphia, last year's Super Bowl champion, ranked 11th in the NFL with 103 penalties. Kansas City, the AFC champion, was fourth with 94. The Los Angeles Rams, who won the NFC West, had the fewest penalties in the league with 91. Glenn said there are two types of calls on players during games: pre-snap penalties — 'the dumb penalties' — and competitive penalties, including pass interference. 'The competitive penalties, listen, you go back and forth with those, right?' Glenn said. 'Like P.I., guys are fighting. Those are competitive penalties. Holds, those are competitive. Now, false starts, jumping offside, hitting after plays, the dumb stuff, we've got to knock those out. And we control those. And those are the things I want to make sure we get rid of.' ___ AP NFL:

Jordan Hicks retires, leaving Browns with more concerns at linebacker

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns situation at linebacker became a bigger concern on Friday after Jordan Hicks announced his retirement. HT Image Hicks missed the first two days of training camp with what the team called a personal matter. The 33-year-old Hicks posted his retirement announcement on Instagram after 10 years in the league. 'Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly it showed me who I am outside the game,' Hicks said in his post. 'I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I'm proud of what l accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it.' Hicks played 12 games last season and was third on the team with 78 tackles. The Browns were already down one middle linebacker going into camp with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out for the season with a neck injury. Hicks was a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He also played for Arizona and Minnesota before signing as an unrestricted free agent with Cleveland last year. 'I'm truly just happy for him, just to leave on your own terms, do it the way you want to do it. Just having a great career,' linebacker Jerome Baker said. Rookie Carson Schwesinger, the 33rd overall pick in April's draft, could move into Hick's starting spot. Nathaniel Watson was Hicks' backup at the end of last season. 'When you lose a player due to injury or retirement or whatever, there's opportunities that come up for younger players and in this day and age, young players play early at these positions," coach Kevin Stefanski said before the start of Friday's practice. "They may be counted on and that's why we're working so hard. That's why we're trying to be efficient with everything we do, maximize every rep and minute that we have with these young men to get them ready to play.' Devin Bush, one of the other starters at linebacker, could miss part of the season if he is suspended by the league for violations of the personal conduct policy. Bush was charged with simple assault and harassment after being arrested in May outside of Pittsburgh. ___ AP NFL:
