Tata Motors is planning to invest up to ₹ 35,000 crore in its passenger vehicle business. The homegrown automobile giant has stated during its investor day presentation on Monday that it plans to invest the amount in the development of electric vehicles as well as new models, which are expected to be launched in the market over the course of the next five years. With this huge investment strategy, the carmaker aims to cement its position as the country's top electric passenger vehicle manufacturer amid the rising competition and greater push to adopt cleaner cars.
Tata Motors currently holds the lion's share in the Indian electric passenger vehicle market with its models like the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, as well as the newly launched Harrier EV. Besides that, the automaker sells some of the popular SUVs as well, which have been propelling growth for the brand amid the rapidly surging demand for utility vehicles in India. These SUVs include Nexon, Punch, Harrier, Safari, etc. The company is planning to bring the Sierra to the Indian market too, in its EV form as well as ICE guise.

Reuters has reported that in its investor day presentation, Tata Motors has revealed the plan to nearly double the company's PV product portfolio from eight models to 15. This target will be achieved through launching more electric vehicles and CNG cars. Besides that, there will be technology feature enhancements for the existing vehicles, claims the report. Despite revealing the plan of investment for the next five years, Tata Motors did not share its investment plan for the current financial year, which will end in March 2026.
The move from Tata Motors comes at a time when India, the world's third-largest passenger vehicle market, is planning to enforce stricter emission norms starting from 2027. Also, the Indian government wants electric vehicles to form 30 per cent of all car sales in the country by 2030.
Intense competition in the combustion engine market has allowed rival Mahindra to overtake Tata. MG Motor has also challenged Tata's EV dominance with the Windsor model, outselling its products since late last year. However, despite that, Tata Motors maintained its target of 16 per cent market share by March 2027, aiming to reach 18-20 per cent by March 2030.

Liquor stocks like United Spirits, Sula Vineyard in focus as Maharashtra hikes excise duties

Shares of liquor companies such as United Spirits, Sula Vineyard, United Breweries, and Allied Blenders and Distillers are set to be in focus on Wednesday, after the Maharashtra government approved sweeping changes to liquor taxation and regulation aimed at boosting excise revenues. ADVERTISEMENT The Maharashtra state cabinet, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Tuesday approved a significant hike in excise duties on liquor alongside a series of structural reforms to tighten oversight and expand revenue collection. The measures are expected to add approximately Rs 14,000 crore annually to the Excise Department's revenue. Following the cabinet's decision, several liquor companies have reportedly raised prices across categories in the state. This comes as the excise duty on Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) with a declared manufacturing value of up to Rs 260 per bulk litre has been revised from three times to 4.5 times the manufacturing value. Similarly, the duty on country liquor has increased from Rs 180 to Rs 205 per proof litre. Consumers across Maharashtra will face higher prices at both retail outlets and hospitality establishments. The minimum retail price for a 180 ml bottle of country liquor has increased to Rs 80 from Rs 70. Indian-made foreign liquor has gone up to Rs 205 from Rs 110–115, while premium foreign liquor now starts at Rs 360, up from Rs 210. A new category, Maharashtra-made liquor, has been introduced, with a minimum price of Rs 148 for a 180ml cabinet also approved the creation of a new liquor category called Maharashtra-made liquor, which will be grain-based and produced exclusively by Maharashtra-based manufacturers. World in BIG crisis! World Bank's shocking predictions about India, China…, Donald Trump's trade war to…

India's economic condition currently appears stable, but constantly evolving policies in global trade and rising questions with major partners like the United States will shape the economy's direction in the coming months. According to reports, increasing trade tensions and policy uncertainty are expected to limit global growth to just 2.3% this year, the slowest pace since 2008 (excluding global recessions). In January, the estimate was 2.7%. The World Bank has warned that if decisive action is not taken promptly, there could be a major impact on human living standards. According to the World Bank's latest Global Economic Prospects report, heightened trade tensions and policy uncertainty are expected to drive global growth down this year to its slowest pace since 2008 outside of outright global recessions. The turmoil has resulted in growth forecasts being cut in nearly 70 per cent of all economies—across all regions and income groups, it said. After unexpectedly weak growth of 6 per cent in 2024, activity in South Asia (SAR) is decelerating amid rising global trade barriers, heightened policy uncertainty, and financial market volatility, it said. World Bank On India GDP World Bank on Tuesday pegged India's economic growth projection at a lower level of 6.3 per cent for 2025-26 due to pressure on exports emanating from global uncertainties, though the country will remain the fastest growing major global economy. In April, the World Bank had lowered India's growth projection for 2025-26 to 6.3 per cent from its January forecast of 6.7 per cent. Regarding India, the report said the growth moderated in FY2024-25 (April 2024 to March 2025), partly reflecting a deceleration in industrial output growth. However, growth in construction and services activity remained steady, and agricultural output recovered from severe drought conditions, supported by resilient demand in rural areas. 'India is projected to maintain the fastest growth rate among the world's largest economies, at 6.3 per cent in FY2025-26,' it said. Nevertheless, the forecast for growth in FY2025-26 has been downgraded by 0.4 percentage point relative to January projections, with exports dampened by weaker activity in key trading partners and rising global trade barriers, the World Bank said. Last week, the Reserve Bank on India retained GDP growth projections for the current fiscal at 6.5 per cent, saying the Indian economy presents a picture of strength, stability and opportunity in the backdrop of global uncertainty. World Bank expects China to grow at 4.5 per cent in 2025 and 4 per cent next year. (With Inputs From Agencies)
