Unadilla Motocross 2025 preview: Top finishes, previous winners, historic results, who to watch
Hosting races since 1969, Unadilla pre-dates Pro Motocross itself and has been the site of some iconic events, including the first Motocross of Nations in 1987. That year, Bob Hannah led Rick Johnson and Jeff Ward to victory in the middle of a 13-year streak of victories for Team USA. Last year, Sexton continued his string of victories at Unadilla and came close to wrapping up the 2024 championship.
Dan Beaver,
Jett won there in 2023 as part of his perfect rookie season, and he could easily clinch the Pro Motocross championship this week. The penalty at Ironman that kept him from securing the overall win and placed him outside the top five also put a chip on his shoulder that will make him even more dangerous.
Losing two consecutive motocross rounds is extremely rare for Jett. The last time that happened was in the 250 class in 2022, and it came at the site of the following two rounds, Unadilla and Budds Creek, according to WeWentFast.com.
Ken Roczen will return to action this week and race the final two Motocross rounds in preparation for the SMX Playoffs. He won back-to-back rounds in 2019 and 2021 (2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), and has Sexton's goal of finishing in the top 10 in his first round back in mind this week.
Hunter became the fourth rider to score his first overall win after standing on the podium at least 10 times. When Chad Reed first won in 2009, he had come close 27 times. That same season, Mike Alessi got his first win after 12 podiums. In 2022 at Hangtown, Jason Anderson completed the task after 16 top-three results. Hunter finished second 10 times and was on the podium 14 times previously before Ironman.
RJ Hampshire scored his first overall podium last week after qualifying a season-best of second.
250 Notes
Haiden Deegan has a chance to clinch the 250 division this week, and momentum is on his side after a 1-1 finish at Ironman. He has been first or second in 17 of the 18 motos run this week
Deegan also has the chance to catch Jett in 250 wins at Unadilla and could pass him for sole possession of eighth on the chart if he races and wins in Budds Creek. Jett achieved 14 wins in 36 starts. If Deegan wins this week, he will have 14 victories in 34 starts.
In the SMX points battle, Deegan clinched the No. 1 seed last week.
Jo Shimoda is comfortably second, but the remainder of the top 10 is in question. Notably, positions sixth through 10th are separated by 16 points. Max Vohland (sixth), Julien Beaumer (seventh), Michael Mosiman (eighth), Levi Kitchen (ninth), and Jordon Smith (10th) all know how important those extra seeding points are when the three-round playoff begins in September.

Hlinka-Gretzky Cup Three Stars: Hextall, Hermansson, and Betts Shine as USA Wins Gold, Canada Takes Bronze
The Hlinka-Gretzky Cup has wrapped up with Team USA taking the gold medal in a thrilling win over Sweden, while Canada took home the bronze against the Finns. This edition of the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup was an exciting tournament, featuring some excellent standout performances, including a number of players who saved their best for last. The gold medal game between USA and Sweden was a back-and-forth affair filled with sloppy play, excellent power play efficiency by the Americans, and a Swedish team that never seemed to get their feet under them. Sweden opened the scoring, but the Americans responded to take the lead. Sweden tied it, and the USA added a couple to pull ahead. Sweden pulled within one, but the Americans added one last goal late to secure the win. Canada took home the bronze in a bit of a ho-hum game, taking a lead early in the first period and never really looking back. The Canadians dominated the pace of play for most of the game, eventually adding an insurance marker in the second period. After Canada lost to the U.S. in the semifinals, they came into the bronze medal game with a business-like approach. Let's take a look at the three stars of the medal round. First Star: Jack Hextall, C, USA No one was buzzing around the ice in this game the way that Jack Hextall was. His speed and skill allowed him to constantly find himself in positions to create something with the puck, buzzing east-west off the puck to collect loose pucks or pick up rebounds. His patience with the puck was an asset on both his first assist and his goal. Hextall added a second helper on a secondary assist on the power play as well. The assist came on a play in which he was able to rotate to the halfwall on the power play, wait for his teammate to attack the back door, and Hextall sent a cross-ice pass right to the doorstep of the crease, where he was able to time Noah Davidson's arrival perfectly for a tap-in. On his goal, Hextall was moving laterally across the top of the circles, drawing two defenders' attention who both went to block the shot at different times before Hextall waited for a clear lane and fired the puck past the sprawling defenders. Every time the Americans felt like the Swedes were beginning to push back, Hextall was thrown over the boards, and Team USA got back some of the momentum. This was a coming-out party for Hextall, and he should be able to build off a leading role at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup to propel him to a strong draft season. Hlinka Gretzky Cup: Canada, USA, Sweden And Finland's Top Players Before Rivalry-Filled Semifinals The Hlinka Gretzky Cup has been quite entertaining so far, and it's about to amp up. Second Star: Elton Hermansson, RW, Sweden Opening the scoring less than a minute into the game and then adding a second goal in period two that pulled the Swedes within one at the time, Hermansson showed off his high-end shooting ability. The game's opening goal came on a rush opportunity where Hermansson simply pulled the puck in to use the defender as a screen before launching a wicked snap shot by the American netminder. His second goal came on a short five-on-three power play, walking down toward the inside edge of the faceoff circle and firing a low-to-high pass by the goalie in an instant. Throughout the third period, Hermansson was one of the Swedes who were buzzing around, trying to even up the game. His speed and skill were on full display as he did everything he could to evade pressure, spin off defenders and create chances for himself and his teammates. Ultimately, Hermansson and the Swedes came up short, but the impressive performance Hermansson put together in the gold medal game and the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup as a whole should be a building block for this season for the Swede. Hlinka Gretzky Cup: Verhoeff and DuPont Headline 12 Players To Watch The unofficial start to the 2026 NHL draft season has arrived as the Hlinka Gretzky Cup kicked off on Monday. Third Star: Gavin Betts, G, Canada In a game where Canada wasn't pristine or overly dynamic offensively, netminder Gavin Betts made 22 saves for the shutout. There weren't many big pushes from the Finns, but whenever they did begin to push, Betts was there. It's often tough for goalies when they aren't staying busy, and there were stretches of play where Betts didn't see a shot for quite some time, especially early in the game, but he remained locked in for when the Finns did make a push. The third period was Betts' busiest, stopping nine shots as Finland looked to try and get onto the board, but Betts stood tall. He consistently cut down angles and avoided letting a bad one in to give Finland life. Betts will look to build on his performance at the HGC, bringing the winning ways to the Kingston Frontenacs. Bryson DeChambeau Reveals LIV's Message as PGA Tour Bars Ryder Cup Tune-Up Plan
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With just 41 days to go before the Ryder Cup tees off at Bethpage Black, heat and excitement around Team USA are growing. The final team will be announced after the Tour Championship next week, but one unqualified LIV name is already locked in: Bryson DeChambeau. Last month, US captain Keegan Bradley confirmed to Sports Illustrated that the LIV Golf star will be part of the squad, calling him "a very important piece to us winning the Ryder Cup." UTTOXETER, ENGLAND - JULY 26: Bryson DeChambeau of Crushers GC chats in action on day two of LIV Golf UK by JCB at JCB Golf & Country Club on July 26, 2025 in Uttoxeter, England.... (Photo by) More Getty Images But while Bradley wants DeChambeau in his lineup, he won't have him in his warm-up plans. The captain has encouraged all US players to compete in the Procore Championship at Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif., taking place just two weeks before the Bethpage showdown. Though the event isn't mandatory, most players are expected to be there. Scottie Scheffler has already confirmed his participation, and others are likely to follow once the final six captain's picks are made. DeChambeau, however, won't be joining them. "That's up to the Tour and their decision to make," DeChambeau told Sports Illustrated after opening with a 4-under 67 at LIV Golf Indianapolis on Friday. "It's on them if they don't let us become together as a team and play." "That just shows you ... yeah, I'm not gonna say that," he added further, while pausing. "Yeah, it's a scenario that's unfortunate, and I wish it was different, but LIV's willing to let me play." DeChambeau would need a sponsor's exemption to enter the Procore Championship, a formality given his star power, but the real hurdle is eligibility. A PGA Tour spokesperson reiterated to SI Golf that the two-time U.S. Open champion "is not eligible for PGA Tour competition," due to his ongoing suspension stemming from his 2022 move to LIV Golf. Bradley's agent, Brett Falkoff, confirmed that no formal request had been made to the Tour. "Bryson plans to participate in every team gathering that he is permitted to attend," Falkoff revealed via text to SI's Bob Harig. Unless the PGA Tour reverses its four-year stance on LIV-affiliated players, DeChambeau will be the only member of Team USA absent from the Napa event. DeChambeau, currently ranked fifth in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings with 10,774.98 points, is projected to qualify automatically. He also sits at No. 17 in the Official World Golf Ranking, despite LIV events not awarding OWGR points. The "Break 50" YouTuber's season includes a win in Korea, top-five finishes in three majors, and a T10 at The Open. "I'm going to have the best 12 players, so the PGA of America ... we're going to have the 12 best players, so they need to figure that out, if that's their problem," Bradley said, as quoted by SI. But for now, DeChambeau remains focused on what he can control. More Golf: Scottie Scheffler shows his edge amid 'ridiculous' Ryder Cup questions
