Give my child back: Father whose son died in Bengaluru stampede refuses postmortem

India Today05-06-2025
A father who lost his son in the Bengaluru stampede on Wednesday appeared inconsolable and urged the authorities to return the body of his son without an autopsy. "Home minister came and went. We have one child, give me my child back," the father pleaded with the authorities.Struggling to hold back his emotions, he continued, 'Don't want any postmortem, whatever happened has happened. Just send my son back to me. I don't live without my son for an hour also. 22 years I've taken care of him , because of you all he's dead today. Just send him back now.' advertisementHis son was one of the 11 cricket fans who lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a chaotic celebration at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium last evening in view of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) winning Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
The chaos stemmed from confusion over a planned victory parade, overcrowding and poor coordination. The Bengaluru Traffic Police at 11.56 am yesterday announced that there would be no victory parade, only a felicitation ceremony at the stadium. However, at 3:14 pm the same day, the RCB team management issued a conflicting statement, saying a victory parade would take place at 5 pm. This contradictory information led to widespread confusion among fans about whether the parade was actually happening. While the stadium holds around 35,000 people, an estimated 2-3 lakh fans gathered after conflicting announcements from the authorities and the RCB team.advertisementMany fans without tickets tried to force entry, leading to gate breaches and people being trampled. Most victims were young, including students. The Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, stated that the overwhelming turnout was unexpected and an inquiry is underway into the tragedy. Despite attempts by the police to manage the crowd, including the use of mild force, the situation escalated.According to the police, around 50,000 people were within a 1-kilometre radius and the number just kept increasing."While those with valid tickets were allowed to enter the stadium for celebrations, many tried to squeeze in with those who had free passes and tickets. In that bid to get entry, some of them also started pushing each other," a police officer said.More than 1 lakh people had also gathered in front of Vidhana Soudha and there was no untoward incident there. The Bengaluru Metro also announced that trains would not stop at Cubbon Park and Dr B R Ambedkar stations due to the heavy footfall.Must Watch

"Before A Match, I Would Automatically...": Pragyan Ojha Shares Cricketing Superstition

Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha shared his long-standing superstition. He mentioned that he always called his family before a match, but a missed call due to poor network in Sri Lanka led to him becoming Muttiah Muralitharan's 800th wicket. Ojha last played an international game in 2013, which was also the retirement match for Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar at the Wankhede Stadium. In the game, he managed to take ten wickets and was awarded the Player of the Match. Speaking on 'Cheeky Singles', Pragyan Ojha said, "Whenever I used to get in the team bus before a match, I would automatically call my mom, then my dad. Even if both of them were sitting together, I'd call them separately. Then I'd call my uncle, who was a cricketer and the one who inspired me to take up the game. Even if I had called my uncle 10 minutes before the match, he would have picked up. But in Sri Lanka, at that time, there was no network, and the call didn't go through. Because of that, I became Muttiah Muralitharan's 800th wicket." The 33-year-old Ojha had made his international debut in 2008 against Bangladesh in Karachi. A year later, he went on to make his Test debut against Sri Lanka . The spinner went on to play 24 Tests, 18 ODIs and six T20Is for India and finished with a total of 144 wickets in the international game. In the longest format of the game, he managed to take 113 wickets, with the best bowling figures of 6-47. He was last seen in action in 2018 as he played a first-class match in Dehradun. He also made a name for himself in the Indian Premier League as he played for the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. He was a key member of the Deccan Chargers IPL-winning team in 2009. He last played a match in the premier tournament in 2015 for the Mumbai Indians.

Will not publish or circulate D'Cunha Commission report on Bengaluru stampede, Karnataka govt assures HC

The Karnataka High Court Wednesday directed the state government to ensure that the Justice (Retd) Michael D'Cunha Commission report on the June 4 stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is not published or circulated until the next date of hearing and the government assured the court of the same. The division bench of Justice Jayant Banerji and Justice Umesh M Adiga recorded the submission by Advocate General K Shashikiran Shetty and adjourned the hearing of the petition filed by DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited to September 4, allowing the Karnataka government time to file its objections. Eleven people were killed in the stampede, which occurred during a celebration to mark the Indian Premier League (IPL) victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) cricket team. The Commission's findings held the event organisers and senior police officers responsible for the tragedy. As a result, the government decided to file criminal charges against officials from RCB, DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association. DNA, the event management partner of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, which owns RCB, filed the plea arguing the Commission violated the provisions of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, in the procedure adopted in conducting the inquiry. Senior advocate B K Sampath Kumar argued that DNA had not been granted the opportunity to cross-examine those witnesses who had deposed against them. Kumar alleged that DNA had not been given a copy of the report, when extracts from it had been circulated in the media, adding that the reputation of DNA was being tarnished 'every second'. The AG Wednesday stated that the Commission is a fact-finding body, and there is no question of damage to anyone's reputation. Kumar had previously stated before the court that the time provided for the inquiry was one month and the report was ready only by July 11, which was beyond the period. 'Nowhere is the power for the one-man Commission to say such-and-such action should be taken against any individuals. It is only to point out who is responsible, what were the lapses, etc,' he had said. At the time, AG Shetty had expressed doubts regarding the legal maintainability of the petition by DNA. The high court had then directed the judicial report to be placed before it in a sealed cover.
