Back ‘Telugu bidda' as next V-P: Revanth
Addressing a press conference at his residence, he appealed to AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, BRS President K Chandrashekar Rao, BJP MPs from the two states and Communist parties to support the 'constitutional expert' in the Vice-President elections. Urging that everyone should think beyond politics as it was the responsibility of Telugu people to unite and strive for the victory of the legal luminary, who was also the Chairman of the Independent Expert Committee constituted by Telangana government to study the Caste Census data, he said:
'The INDIA alliance's announcement of Justice Sudarshan Reddy as the Vice-President candidate has increased the respect of the Telugu people, especially the people of Telangana'.
Revanth Reddy noted that it was a big honour for Telugu people that after P V Narasimha Rao, Justice Sudharshan Reddy was contesting for a top post in the country. He maintained that the INDIA Bloc candidate was not affiliated to any political outfit. Hence, parties from the two states should announce their unconditional support for Sudarshan Reddy.
The Chief Minister recalled how N T Ram Rao had extended all out support to Prime Minister-designate P V Narasimha Rao in Nandyal Lok Sabha elections by not fielding a TDP candidate in 1991. NTR displayed his political maturity and wisdom by supporting a Congress leader, he said.
The Chief Minister hoped that Telugu leaders from the two states would toe the NTR's line and support Sudarshan Reddy to safeguard the country's democratic spirit.

New bill to regulate online gaming tabled in Lok Sabha – 10 things to know about the proposed law
A bill seeking to prohibit and regulate online gaming was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, 20 August, amid opposition protests over electoral roll revision in Bihar. Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced the bill as opposition members continued to raise slogans and display placards. The chair asked Congress member Manish Tewari to make his remarks on opposing the bill at the introduction stage. However, he said the House should first discuss the Special Intensive Revision exercise in Bihar. NK Premchandran of the RSP also refused to speak, saying the House was not in order. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju slammed the opposition for creating disruptions, saying even school students are now mocking the parliamentarians for their conduct in the House. Here are 10 things about the proposed law: 1-The bill prohibits offering, operating, or facilitating online money games, irrespective of whether based on skill, chance, or both. The bill has also proposed a blanket ban on advertising and promotion of money games across all forms of media. The Bill proposes a ban on financial transactions linked to online money games; banks and payment systems are barred from processing such payments.. It empowers agencies to block access to unlawful gaming platforms under the Information Technology Act, 2000. 2-The bill also calls for promoting eSports and online social games. E-sports are recognised as a legitimate form of competitive sport in India. The Ministry of Sports will frame guidelines and standards for conducting e-sports events. 3-The 13-page bill drafted by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) describes an online money game as one played by a user who deposits money in expectation of winning monetary and other enrichment, the news agency said. Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw is scheduled to move the Bill in Lok Sabha. 4-The central government will establish a national-level Authority or designate any existing Authority or Authorities or any agency for oversight. The authority's functions include categorising and registering online games, determining whether a game qualifies as a money game, and handling complaints and grievances related to online games. 5-Those found guilty of offering or facilitating online money gaming can lead to imprisonment of up to 3 years and/or a fine of up to ₹ 1 crore. Advertising money games can lead to imprisonment up to 2 years and/or fine up to ₹ 50 lakh. Those found guilty of financial transactions related to money games can face imprisonment for up to 3 years and/or a fine of up to ₹ 1 crore. Repeat offences attract enhanced penalties, including imprisonment of 3–5 years and fines up to ₹ 2 crore. 6- Companies and their officers will be held liable for offences under the Act, unless they prove due diligence. Independent directors or non-executive directors not involved in decision-making are protected, according to the proposed law. 7- Union government may authorise officers to investigate, search, and seize digital or physical property linked to offences. Officers empowered to enter, search, and arrest without warrant in certain cases of suspected offences. The provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 apply to investigations under the Act. 8- The bill empowers the Central Government to make rules for a)Promotion of e-sports and social gaming, b) Recognition, Categorisation and registration of online games, c) Powers and functioning of the Authority and d) any other matter required or permitted to be prescribed under this Act. 9-The proposed law aims at enhancing India's role in global gaming exports, employment and innovation, according to a government statement It also encourages constructive participation through e-sports and skill-based digital games. 10 - The law protects families from predatory online money gaming practices. It also positions India as a leader in responsible gaming innovation and digital policy-making, the government said. 'The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 strikes a balanced path—encouraging innovation and youth engagement through safe and positive online gaming, while firmly prohibiting harmful online money games,' the statement said.

RJD calls Constitution Amendment Bill to remove PM, CMs over graft charges a 'tactic'
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha on Wednesday opposed the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to remove PM, CMs, and ministers facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Speaking to ANI, Jha described it as a "tactic" that wherever BJP can't win elections, it will not indulge in horse-trading, but destabilise and topple that government through the bill. "The difference between the accused and the convicted has blurred. The Supreme Court had commented about ED that they are becoming a part of the political game. They will slap PMLA cases against anyone and put them behind bars. This is a tactic. Wherever you can't win elections, you need not indulge in horse-trading. Just destabilise them and topple them. I think the Home Minister wants to target a few people from his own party as well," he said. Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai said, "One more line should have been written in it that either the criminal joins BJP or this bill will be applied to them. The Prime Minister and Home Minister, who claimed to send someone to jail, as soon as they join BJP, they become Chief Ministers and Ministers." Online Gaming Bill tabled in Lok Sabha The Online Gaming Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha, after being cleared by cabinet, on Wednesday, with the government describing it as a move that 'strikes a balanced path—encouraging innovation and youth engagement through safe and positive online gaming, while firmly prohibiting harmful online money games. ' Titled the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, the legislation aims to promote e-sports and online social games while imposing a total ban on real-money gaming, betting and gambling, including fantasy sports, poker, rummy and online lotteries. It also prohibits related advertisements and financial transactions. The Electronics and IT Ministry said the Bill is designed to protect India's youth from predatory Real Money Gaming apps that lure users with 'misleading monetary return promises' and drive compulsive play leading to family financial distress. The government argued the ban can help prevent addiction, financial losses, and even suicide risks, while also curbing misuse of such platforms for fraud, money laundering and terror financing, which compromise national security. The Bill brings digital rules in line with offline laws under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and state gambling regulations. On the promotion side, e-sports has been recognised as a legitimate competitive sport. The Sports Ministry will set guidelines, training academies, research centres and incentive schemes. MeitY and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry will support social games that foster education, cultural awareness and skill development. A national authority will be set up to regulate online games, including categorisation, registration, oversight of complaints, and determination of whether a game qualifies as a money game. What is the Online Gaming Bill? The Online Gaming Bill seeks to provide India's first comprehensive national law for online gaming. The proposed legislation aims to bring clarity to the fast-growing digital gaming sector by separating safe forms of e-sports and casual social games from hazardous real-money gaming platforms. At its core, the Bill prohibits all forms of online money gaming, regardless of whether they are based on skill, chance, or both. It defines an online money game as one played by paying fees, depositing money, or other stakes in the expectation of monetary returns. Notably, the definition excludes e-sports, which the government has recognised as a legitimate competitive sport. The proposed law seeks to curb the promotion and facilitation of betting-like activities by banning three key aspects: the offering of online money gaming services, advertising or promoting such platforms, and processing financial transactions related to them. Banks and payment systems would be barred from transferring funds linked to real-money games. To ensure compliance, the Bill prescribes stringent punishments. Operators of illegal money gaming platforms face up to three years in prison and/or fines of up to Rs 1 crore. Advertising such platforms could attract a two-year jail term and/or fines of up to Rs 50 lakh. Financial institutions involved in related transactions face penalties of up to three years in prison and/or fines of Rs 1 crore. Repeat offenders would face harsher punishments, including longer prison terms and higher fines, as reported by ANI. Key offences are cognisable and non-bailable. Officers will be empowered to investigate, search and seize property, and make arrests without warrants in suspected cases. The government has stressed that the law will not criminalise players themselves. Instead, it treats users as victims of addiction and exploitation, focusing punitive measures on promoters, advertisers, and financial enablers. This distinction reflects the intent to protect society from the harms of predatory real-money gaming apps while encouraging safe, regulated push for legislation stems from growing concerns over online betting's impact on mental health and financial security. Reports have linked compulsive money gaming to fraud, financial distress, depression, and even suicides. In the absence of a central law, the sector has remained in a legal grey zone, with differing state-level regulations. To provide regulatory clarity, the Bill proposes the creation of a national authority empowered to categorise games, register platforms, and determine whether a particular game qualifies as an 'online money game.' Such determinations would follow due inquiry, offering clear guidance to operators, players, and enforcement combining strict prohibition of online betting with a framework to promote e-sports and safe social gaming, the Online Gaming Bill seeks to strike a balance between innovation and protection. The government has positioned it as a safeguard against misuse of technology, while also encouraging India's youth to engage in healthy, skill-based digital competition.
