With two key players departing, Mamelodi Sundowns are set for a significant overhaul as they look continue their dominance in the new season.
On Sunday, Sundowns announced the departure of two of their long-serving midfielders, Lebohang Maboe and Rivaldo Coetzee. The duo have been released following the expiry of their contracts, marking the end of an era as the club prepares for a fresh chapter.
Maboe, a prominent figure in Sundowns' midfield for the past seven years, spent the latter part of last season on loan at SuperSport United, where he made a crucial impact by playing 16 matches, scoring once and assisting on two occasions. His contributions were pivotal in helping SuperSport narrowly avoid relegation during a tense finale to the season.
After 7 memorable years, 12 trophies, 183 appearances and that unforgettable league winning hattrick - the Yellow Nation bids farewell to Lebohang Maboe 💛

The 30-year-old joined Sundowns in the 2017/18 campaign from Maritzburg United — now known as Durban City FC — and during his time at the club, he collected numerous accolades, including the African Football League title in 2023.
Reflecting on his tenure, Sundowns said in a statement: 'After seven memorable years, 12 trophies, 183 appearances and that unforgettable league-winning hat-trick, Sundowns bid farewell to Lebohang Maboe. We wish you nothing but success as you enter your next chapter.'
Similarly, Rivaldo Coetzee's career at Sundowns was blighted by injury, which severely limited his playing time. The talented defender joined the club from Ajax Cape Town in 2017, amassing a remarkable 14 trophies during his stay.
However, a series of setbacks prevented him from making a notable impact in recent campaigns, leading to his release as Sundowns restructure their squad.
The Yellow Nation thanks Rivaldo Coetzee for eight years as a Sandawana 💛

Traditionally active in the transfer market, Sundowns will be eager to secure players capable of helping them achieve their ambitious targets after a mixed campaign last season.
While the club successfully defended their PSL title, their aspirations for the Nedbank Cup fell short when they were eliminated by Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals. Additionally, their quest for continental glory ended at the hands of Pyramids FC of Egypt, who went on to claim their first CAF Champions League crown.
As the dust settles on these departures, many eyes will be on Sundowns as they embark on a new season filled with promise and potential, bolstered by a fresh influx of talent as they strive to continue their reign at the summit of South African football.
Sundowns are set to begin their pre-season preparations on 21 July. This year, the club is breaking from tradition by remaining closer to home, opting for a domestic training camp in Rustenburg rather than travelling abroad.
By convening in Rustenburg, Sundowns aim to create a focused environment conducive to training and development. The players will have the opportunity to work closely with the coaching team, fine-tuning tactics and strategies designed to bolster their on-field performances.

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star spotted at new club
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star defender Njabulo Ngcobo has reportedly been spotted at a new club. Ngcobo recently parted ways with Sekhukhune United where he only lasted for a season. Now, according to iDiski Times , Ngcobo is currently in the Mother City to try his luck with Cape Town City. Cape Town City appear likely to be preparing for life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. This despite their recent fight to have Marumo Gallants docked points so that they can return to the Betway Premiership. As things stand, Gallants remain in the Betway Premiership after the PSL DC slapped them with just a R200 000 fine. Now, having already lost a few of their senior players, including Thabo Nodada, City could well benefit from Ngcobo's experience. Ngcobo was named the best defender in the league during the 2021-22 season, before he signed for Chiefs where he made 45 appearances during his three-year stint. He spent a few weeks with Chippa United in the hope of securing a deal, but the lanky defender is now in Cape Town. Njabulo Ngcobo during his time with Kaizer Chiefs. 'Latest update received by iDiski Times is that Ngcobo stopped training with Chippa United a few days ago and is currently in the Mother City to try it out at the Citizens under the watchful eye of head coach Jan Vreman and his technical team.'
