1,200 cyber criminals, nearly 500 drug dealers arrested in Jharkhand in 6 months
"The Jharkhand police destroyed opium crop on 27000 acres of land, arrested 484 drug peddlers between January and June this year, and seized narcotics worth Rs 34 crore. It arrested 700 accused involved in cyber crime in the six months, in addition to nabbing 474 cyber criminals through the Pratibimb app," the DGP said."From January to June 2025, more than 700 accused involved in cyber crime were arrested and many illegal items were seized along with more than Rs 50 lakh. Apart from this, a total of 474 cyber criminals were arrested by making meaningful use of Pratibimb App, and about Rs 16 crore related to cyber crime were recovered through cyber helpline number dial-1930 and about Rs 80 lakh were returned to the victims' accounts as per the court order," the DGP said.Gupta said a 'Mahila Shakti Commando' force has been formed for women's safety in the state, in addition to launching a Women Helpline Number."For the safety of women in the state, women help desks have been opened in all the districts and women helpline numbers/police control room numbers have been made available at public places so that the police can provide immediate help to women on short notice. Along with this, women police stations are also operating in all the districts and "Mahila Shakti Commando" has been formed for women's safety," he said.The DGP also asserted that the police have waged war to wipe out Naxalism from the state, and 17 of them were killed during encounters, while 197 were arrested in six months, and 10 were forced to surrender."Jharkhand Police, while facing many challenges, arrested a total of 197 Naxalites in the state from January to June 2025 (half-yearly), 10 Naxalites surrendered and 17 Naxalites were killed in police encounters," he said adding this year a total of four police officers/personnel lost their lives while performing their duties in the Naxal eradication campaign in Jharkhand.The deceased include Sub Inspector Sunil Kumar Mandal of CRPF, a Sub Inspector - Satyawan Kumar Singh, a Constable Parneshwar Koch and Sunil Dhan of Jharkhand Jaguars.advertisementBesides, a total of 12 criminals of organised criminal gangs and five activists of banned terrorist organisation HuT (HIZB UT-TAHIRIR) were arrested by ATS, he said.To establish better coordination with the general public and to resolve their problems, 'Public Grievance Resolution Programmes' were organised at the Police Headquarters level and 3,500 of 4000 complaints were resolved."More than Rs 15 crore was paid to a total of 622 beneficiaries from the Jharkhand Police Assistance and Welfare Fund at the Police Headquarters.Also, a total of 108 dependents were given appointments on compassionate grounds," he said detailing various welfare measures.Altogether 64 Police Inspectors have been promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, nine Assistant Sub-Inspectors to the rank of Sub-Inspector of Police and 91 Sub-Inspectors to the rank of Inspector.- EndsMust Watch

Corporation tender lapses: Madras HC raps DVAC , questions prosecution nod delay
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has questioned the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) over the delay in obtaining sanction from the competent authorities of the government to prosecute the accused persons in the alleged Rs 98.25 crore tender irregularities in Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Coimbatore Corporation (CC) when SP Velumani was the municipal administration minister during the previous AIADMK government. Velumani and some government officials, including two IAS officers, have been arraigned as accused. Justice N Anand Venkatesh, in a recent order, directed respondent DVAC SP to file additional affidavit explaining why there was substantial delay in obtaining sanction. He directed the special court for cases registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) in Chennai to submit a report on the delay in taking on file the charge sheets filed by the DVAC against the accused persons and companies as per orders passed in another contempt petition on April 4, 2024.

CHENNAI: Despite being detained during a midnight police operation on Wednesday and released on Thursday, sanitary workers protesting the privatisation of solid waste management in Royapuram and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zones, outside the Ripon Building for 13 days, have expressed their resolve to continue their agitation. Acknowledging the prevailing uncertainty, many workers TNIE spoke to said they were firm about not joining the private contractor for a lower salary, even though they would struggle financially without wages for the month. A worker who managed to avoid detention on Wednesday, said she joined the work in 2013 for a salary of Rs 6,000 a month. After gradual increments, she was earning nearly Rs 23,000 a month only for the past eight months. 'Without my husband, I raised two daughters through this work. Now, with no work since August 1, it has become difficult for us. I received July's salary, but we don't know how to pay next month's rent or manage other daily needs.' Despite the impending financial stress, she said she would not join the private contractor as there would be no job security and the salary was far less. 'We are only demanding what is fair and right. It is the government that has to keep its promise of regularising our jobs,' she stated.

State will take steps to control ‘goondaraj': CM
Bhubaneswar: OdishaChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said he has given 'absolute power' to the police to take action against those involved in crimes against women. Addressing the Independence Day function at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar, Majhi said his government will not hesitate to bring a special legislation to 'completely end' organised crimes. From the function, the Chief Minister also announced an additional 5 kg of rice will be provided to the poor people in 11 districts for three months. 'People who are involved in crimes against women have no place in society, they must be in jail. Therefore, I have given absolute power to the police to take necessary actions in such cases,' he said. Majhi said nobody, how influential he may be, will be spared if he is involved in crimes against women. The statement came as the State reported a slew of crimes against women, with the Opposition raising questions on the law and order situation. 'The law and order situation of the State is more or less under control. However, we have to strengthen and make it more effective,' he said. Noting that intoxication was one of the major factors behind the rise in crimes, Majhi said he has directed the police to against such activities. 'The government will take all measures to firmly control 'goondaraj'. The process of identification of criminals has already started,' he said. 'In order to completely end organised crimes, the State government will not hesitate to bring special legislation. Extortion and other such activities are completely illegal and those will be considered as organised crimes and dealt with firmly,' he said. Majhi said his government was committed to making colleges and universities safe for women by implementing initiatives like 'Shaktishree'. He maintained that women's empowerment is not just a slogan for his government. 'We have provided financial assistance to over 1 crore women through 'Subhadra Yojana'. Women have been able to become small entrepreneurs by utilising the assistance. The State has so far produced 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis',' he said. The Chief Minister said the State's commitment to women's empowerment is evident from the 2025-26 annual budget, in which allocations of Rs 89,861 crore have been made for schemes in regard to this. Listing the social welfare measures undertaken by his government, Majhi announced that 27 lakh poor families, who are beneficiaries of the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', in 11 districts will be given 5 kg additional rice per month for three months free of cost.
