Sabah named ‘Malaysia's Most Outstanding State' for 2024

(Wikipedia pic) PETALING JAYA: Sabah has made its mark by being named 'Malaysia's Most Outstanding State' for 2024 at the International Business Review (IBR) Asean Awards 2025. Former Petagas assemblyman James Ligunjang said that for the first time, the awards extended recognition to state governments, acknowledging exceptional leadership and accomplishments at the state level alongside corporate achievements.
Advertisement Ligunjang said in a statement that under chief minister Hajiji Noor's leadership, Sabah had received the highest honour for implementing the Sabah Maju Jaya development framework. The framework centres on four pillars: championing Sabah's rights, leading with integrity and efficiency, fostering development aligned with the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030, and maintaining unity among the state's diverse communities. He said key achievements that contributed to the recognition include an increase in federal special grants from RM26 million in 2022 to RM600 million in 2025, and a 47% rise in foreign tourist arrivals, boosting the state's revenue. Other highlights include a substantial stake in oil and gas revenues from the commercial cooperation agreement with Petronas, yielding over RM3 billion in 2023, as well as foreign investments soaring from RM132 million in 2023 to over RM1 billion in 2024. Ligunjang also cited progress on the Pan-Borneo Highway, linking major cities and rural areas, as a key achievement by the state. He said that Azman Ujang, a chief judge of the awards, also highlighted Sabah's potential in economic development and environmental sustainability. 'He noted increased foreign investment interest, with investments rising from RM132.7 million in 2023 to RM1.07 billion in 2024, and praised the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park's record-high occupancy rate of 90% with 288 active investors. 'Sabah also achieved the highest manufacturing sector growth rate in Malaysia at 4.4% in 2023,' Ligunjang said. He said Azman had also emphasised the state's focus on human capital development and environmental conservation, with 62% of Sabah's land, amounting to 4.6 million hectares, declared free of logging, as part of long-term sustainability strategies. The official awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on July 19, at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Kota Kinabalu, with Hajiji expected to attend as an honorary guest. KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has criticised the RM600 to RM700 monthly salaries reportedly paid to around 9,500 teachers at PAS-operated preschools, saying the wages are in clear violation of the national minimum wage law. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH-Setiawangsa) said the justification that Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) teachers were volunteers was unacceptable as it is not in line with regulations under the National Wages Consultative Council (Amendment) Act 2025. The Human Resources Ministry had announced that the Minimum Wage Order 2024 took effect on Aug 1, 2025, setting a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with fewer than five employees not engaged in professional activities classified under the Malaysian Standard Classification of Occupations 2020. Nik Nazmi also urged the government to consolidate existing government-run preschool services – currently managed separately by the Education Ministry, Community Development Department (Kemas) and the National Unity Department – into a more streamlined national programme. He added that the practice also denied the teachers contributions to the Employees Provident Fund and Social Security Organisation. In response, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) said that although the teachers' salaries are low, other allowances were provided despite them working only four hours a day. Nik Nazmi also welcomed the government's plan to make pre-school compulsory at the age of five and to focus on providing facilities in rural areas.

KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has criticised the low salaries of RM600 to RM700 a month paid to over 9,500 teachers at preschools run by the Islamic party Pas, calling it a clear breach of the minimum wage law. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH-Setiawangsa) said the justification that Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) teachers were volunteers was unacceptable, as it contradicts the National Wages Consultative Council (Amendment) Act 2025. He added that the practice also denied the teachers contributions to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). "If the volunteer excuse is used, every company could simply claim their workers are volunteers, thus not subject to the minimum wage order," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today. In response, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) said that although the teachers' salaries are low, other allowances were provided despite them working only four hours a day. He then asked if Nik Nazmi agreed that Pasti helps reduce the government's fiscal burden since it does not use public funds.

Influencer apologises for filming during national anthem

Choo Hao Ren ( pic ) acknowledged that his actions, caught on video in a clip that went viral, were inappropriate and that he should have sung the national anthem solemnly and with respect. Advertisement In a statement on his social media pages, Choo said he was deeply sorry for his actions and promised to act more appropriately in such settings. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh however called for punitive action against Choo for disrespecting the national anthem and the country. 'This is not a question of race or political party, but about how it's the responsibility of all Malaysians to respect this country. That's why we want such people to be punished severely,' he said in a Facebook post. 'It's not that we want to play up the issue, but the issue of respecting the country is more important,' the Melaka executive councillor added.
