TAWAU: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has been urged to assist Sabah in upgrading the quality of football fields in the State, which are seen to be lagging despite Sabah's strong track record of producing national sports talents. State Finance Minister's Political Secretary Datuk Rina Jainal said the State currently relies heavily on funding from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, although many sporting facilities require significant expenditure. 'At the Ministry of Finance, we constantly face conflicts because many sports facilities demand high maintenance costs,' she said. She stressed that Sabah has produced many sports stars and that basic infrastructure must be well-supported by all parties to further develop sports in the State. Rina said this after officiating the 2025/2026 Sabah-level National Football Referees Annual Seminar and Fitness Test held here on Wednesday night. Commenting on the programme, which saw participation from 36 aspiring qualified referees from across Sabah, Rina said it was a proud achievement for Tawau to be selected as the host for the Sabah zonal seminar by FAM itself. She expressed confidence that FAM's presence in the region would inspire young referees to stay active and uncover more promising talent, especially in Tawau. At the same time, she noted the importance of such programmes in strengthening integrity and sporting mindset, especially given the challenging role of referees who must manage matches fairly and often face risks, including corruption. Meanwhile, FAM Referees Unit Head, Kassim Kadir Bacha, said Sabah had shown a significant increase in referee participation, with the current intake rising to 36 from just 15 previously. He emphasised that FAM continues to focus on integrity and consistent monitoring of referees through ongoing seminars while also working to produce more female and young referees from Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rhinos brush aside DPMM

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Coach Alto (left) and Daniel Ting (in red) tries to escape his marker during the match against DPMM FC. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC brushed aside DPMM FC from Brunei 3-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Likas Stadium on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead at half time against this season's Super League newcomers with goals from Daniel Ting in the 11th minute and Miguel Angel Garrido Cifuentes in the 31st minute. Daniel added his second in the 71st minute before the visitors reduced the deficit late in the match. It was also the third pre-season match for Sabah FC following the 2-8 thrashing by Thailand top club Buriram United in the Asean Charity Shield match held two weeks ago in Thailand preceded by the 4-0 win over another Brunei club side Kasuka FC a week earlier at Likas Stadium. Coach Alto Linus was happy with the progress of the players following the big win. 'It was a good result from the team, but there are still several aspects of our game that need to be improved before the start of the new league season. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance of all the players, including the substitutes who came in the second half. 'This friendly was to strengthen the team's match fitness before the league begins in early August and I want to see the players are fully prepared and able to maintain their consistency to get positive results in every match,' he said. Meanwhile, the Rhinos are set to play more friendly matches before the opening match in the new season against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah women emerge runners-up

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: The State women deaf futsal players showing off their medals with the two officials. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah women deaf futsal team came in second after losing 1-9 to Penang in the final of the 5th Malaysian Deaf Futsal Championship held at the RKS Sports Centre in Petaling Jaya on July 25. They had earlier booked their place in the final with wins over Negeri Sembilan (3-1), Perak (3-1) and Melaka (2-0). Sabah Deaf Sports Association President Spencer Soo Kok Heng was delighted with the team's achievement in their maiden appearance in the National Championship. 'It was the first time we joined the competition and seven players were unable to make the trip because of fund issues. 'Despite only being able to feature eight players from the 15 allowed, finishing second was still a very good result. 'Furthermore, we need to take part in this tournament otherwise we can't qualify for Sopma (Malaysian Deaf Sports Games) XXII 2025 to be held in Sarawak this October,' he said. Meanwhile, the team was led by manager Azmi Saip with Lo Fook Fah as coach and the players were Mary Pamela Sylvester, Nicol Yeanna Peter, Sharolyn Arrabella Obil, Brigette Yasin, Fellen Tijin, Veaa Sterra Henry, Annzie Benedict and JC Ezra Grace Jerial @ Jiral. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
