Necessary Steps Will Be Taken To Protect Nation's Interests: Govt On Trumps 25% Tariff Bomb
New Delhi: Following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian exports and a vague "penalty" linked to India's energy deals with Russia, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that "the government will take all necessary steps to protect the nation's interests." During his address in the Lok Sabha, Piyush Goyal said, "...On 2nd April 2025, the US President issued an executive order on reciprocal tariffs...10% baseline duty in effect since 5th April 2025. With a 10% baseline tariff, a total of 26% tariff was announced for India. A full country-specific additional tariff was scheduled to come into effect on 9th April 2025. But on 10th April 2025 this was extended initially for 90 days and then extended till 1st August 2025." Goyal said that the government is examining the impact of the recent events, adding, "The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is holding talks with exporters, industries, and all stakeholders and gathering information on their assessment of this issue. Government gives utmost priority to the safeguarding of the welfare of farmers, labourers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, MSMEs, and stakeholders of the industrial sector. We will take all necessary steps to safeguard our national interest." #WATCH | US Tariffs | Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal says, "Government is examining the impact of the recent will take all necessary steps to safeguard our national interest." The goal of this was to finish the first stage of the Agreement by October-November 2025..." he added. "In less than a decade, India came out of the 'Fragile Five' economies, and it has now become the fastest-growing economy in the world. Based on the hard work of reforms, farmers, MSMEs, and industrialists, we have come in the top 5 economies of the world from the 11th largest economy. It is expected that we will be the third-largest economy in a few years. Today, global institutions and economists see India as a bright spot in the global economy..." he further added. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that India, despite being referred to as a "friend," will be subjected to a 25% tariff on its exports, along with additional penalties due to its continued purchases of Russian oil and military equipment. The measures are set to take effect from August 1. Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, 'Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world—and they impose some of the most strenuous and unreasonable non-monetary trade barriers of any country.' He further criticized India's defense and energy ties with Moscow, saying, 'India has always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia and remains Russia's largest energy buyer, along with China, at a time when the global community wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine.' In a separate post, Trump emphasized that the August 1 deadline 'stands strong and will not be extended.' In response to the announcement, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the Indian government has taken note of the U.S. President's statement on bilateral trade.

Elon Musk's xAI to sign only safety chapter of EU AI code, slams rest as 'detrimental to innovation'; details here
Elon Musk's AI startup xAI will join the European Union's voluntary AI Code of Practice—but only partially. The company announced on Thursday that it will sign just the 'Safety and Security' chapter of the code, distancing itself from the other two sections on transparency and copyright. The EU Code of Practice is a non-binding framework developed by 13 independent experts, aiming to support companies in complying with the bloc's upcoming AI Act. The code is divided into three main chapters—Transparency, Copyright, and Safety and Security. While general-purpose AI providers are expected to follow the transparency and copyright guidelines, the safety and security segment focuses on more advanced AI systems. What xAI said about the EU code In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), xAI confirmed its decision to sign only one part of the framework: 'xAI supports AI safety and will be signing the EU AI Act's Code of Practice Chapter on Safety and Security. While the AI Act and the Code have a portion that promotes AI safety, its other parts contain requirements that are profoundly detrimental to innovation and its copyright provisions are clearly an over-reach,' the company said. xAI supports AI safety and will be signing the EU AI Act's Code of Practice Chapter on Safety and Security. While the AI Act and the Code have a portion that promotes AI safety, its other parts contain requirements that are profoundly detrimental to innovation and its copyright… This indicates xAI's support for regulation around AI safety, but its reluctance to comply with the other sections stems from concerns over how those provisions might impact innovation and intellectual property rights. The company did not respond to requests outside regular business hours regarding whether it would eventually sign the remaining chapters. What the EU code means for companies Although the code is voluntary, companies that sign it could benefit from legal clarity as the EU prepares to roll out its legally binding AI Act in the coming years. The framework aims to help firms navigate the complex regulatory landscape by aligning their systems with EU expectations before formal enforcement begins. The guidance on transparency and copyright is intended for all general-purpose AI companies. In contrast, the safety and security provisions are meant for developers of more advanced AI models—like those xAI is expected to focus on. How other tech giants are responding Reactions from other major tech players have been mixed. Google has already confirmed it will sign the code in full. Microsoft President Brad Smith has also indicated that the company is likely to follow the same route. Meta, on the other hand, has taken a firm stance against the framework. The Facebook-parent company has said it will not sign the EU Code of Practice, arguing that it introduces 'legal uncertainties' for AI model developers and contains measures that exceed the scope of the upcoming AI Act. Effective immediately, Kalshi and xAI are partnering to bring Grok to prediction of the fastest growing companies in America are now on the same team.@xAI 🤝 @Kalshi Where xAI stands xAI's selective participation shows both support for regulated AI development and a clear resistance to what it sees as overregulation. While aligning with the EU on safety, the company remains cautious of provisions it believes may suppress innovation or stretch legal boundaries. As the EU prepares to formalise its AI laws, companies like xAI are likely to continue navigating a fine line—supporting AI governance while resisting what they perceive as regulatory excess.
