Benidorm return 'in crisis' after Derren Litten's divorce from star Jake Canuso

Daily Mirror23-06-2025
As rumours about a new series of much-loved comedy Benidorm continue, it has been reported that Derren Litten and Jake Canuso's separation is adding extra complications
The return of iconic show Benidorm has been thrown into crisis after creator Derren Litten 'miserable' divorce from the show's biggest star Jake Canuso, it has been claimed.
The couple called it quits in 2023 and things are between the producer and the actor - Lothario Matteo in the ITV comedy - are said to be tense. With talks about a return of the much-loved programme still possible, the news comes as a hammer blow to fans.

Benidorm aired for ten series from 2007 until 2018. The show focuses on an all-inclusive hotel in Spain where the same family holiday each year. It featured the likes of Johnny Vegas, Tim Healy, Steve Pemberton, Siobhan Finneran and icid-tongued force of nature Madge, played brilliantly by veteran Sheila Reid.

All left before the final series, throwing a return for any of the big names into doubt. That means stars like long-serving Jake were key to getting a revival off the ground, but the situation between the slippery barman and creator Derren makes things difficult, it has been reported.
The pair officially divorced last year after living together in Benidorm. They even opened a bar called 'Matteo's' where Jake would turn up for guest appearances. Derren said on X last year: 'I don't really talk about my personal life here but the reason I've been a bit scarce on the socials is for the last 18 months I've been going through a pretty miserable divorce. So I'm obviously poor now. And you thought we couldn't have more in common then we already do?!'
A source told The Sun. 'Matteo is Benidorm, he's the character that everyone wants to see. He's been part of the Solana since the beginning so for him not to feature in any future reboot, well it just would not be the same without him. Jake created one of the show's most loved characters in Matteo but with everything that's happened between him and Derren, it's not looking good.'
Another insider said: 'Conversations have been had. The only way Jake will return is if ITV make him a huge offer, one that he could not possibly turn down. But obviously Derren is making negotiations difficult. He is the writer and creator and believes that he should make all the decisions - the fans would want to see Matteo, which ITV get. It's all become one big headache.'
A spokesperson for Jake told the publication they were unaware of any planned return for Benidorm. But all-grown-up Oliver Stokes - who played Michael Garvey since the first show - recently appeared on Loose Women, alongside Hannah Hobley, who played mum-to-Coolio Chantelle.

Oliver was looked after by his grandparents while on set in Benidorm playing the cheeky youngster who ran amok around the Solana Hotel pool. "I had to do a minimum of three hours of schooling a day, which was an absolute bonus," he joked. "But in a way, it wasn't really the best because I didn't really pay attention or do much work. Oh well, it was an experience."
Oliver has now taken a step back from acting and works as a successful tradesman, explaining, "It got to a point where I just thought I wanted an income every month guaranteed, instead of not knowing when your next job is going to come.
"I'd love to get back into the future if the right thing came about but who knows?" Aside from keeping busy with his toddler Archie, he is also an avid fisherman and runs a fish bait company called Active Baits.
Hannah began by saying the show had received so much "love and support" over the rumours, adding: "At the moment, they are just rumours." The studio audience broke out into a chorus of disappointed sighs, with Charlene then revealing she had a statement from ITV regarding the return of Benidorm in the future.
"ITV say, 'We've spoken to one of our sources over here and there's nothing commissioned yet, but we'll keep our fingers crossed'," she announced, giving everyone some hope.

Coronation Street icon to come back as Rovers Return landlady

Catherine Tyldsley, known for the role of Eva Price, is reportedly joining the ITV soap again to take on one of the most beloved roles in Weatherfield. It comes after Sally Ann Matthews, who plays recent pub landlady Jenny Connor, confirmed she would be leaving Corrie. A post shared by Catherine Tyldesley (@auntiecath17) Eva, who first arrived on the programme in 2011, will be following in the footsteps of former Rovers Return legends Liz McDonald, Bet Lynch and Annie Walker. A source told The Sun: 'It's one of the biggest jobs in soap, the landlady of the Rovers Return pub. "Bosses were desperate to get Cath back. "They came up with the perfect storyline with her being unveiled as the new landlady of the Rovers.' Corrie fans might remember Eva was last seen leaving the famous street in 2018 for a fresh start in France with her daughter Susie. This came after the heartbreaking death of her child's father, Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward). Following rumours of Catherine making her way back to Corrie earlier this year, fans began speculating if she could be the new Rovers Return landlady on Reddit, as the pub was put up for sale by Carla Connor (Alison King). In a discussion about who could be taking on the job of the adored watering hole, someone said on the r/coronationstreet page: 'I thought Catherine Tyldesley was coming back? Harry Hill says he was ‘absolutely merciless' in his determination to succeed

Hill, who gave up medicine for a career in comedy, was speaking as he appeared as a guest on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs. 'I was absolutely driven,' he told host Lauren Laverne. 'I had gone from doing 80, 100 hours a week as a doctor, getting up at the crack of dawn. Suddenly I had all this time free during the day, so I really felt like I had something to prove. 'So I would get up and I would write jokes.' Hill said he would make constant calls to get bookings when he started doing stand-up in the early 1990s. 'I would just bug them and bug them,' he said. 'I was absolutely merciless in my pursuit of it. It's not the funniest people that get on, it's the pushiest. And I was pushy.' Hill, whose real name is Matthew Hall, said his first stand-up gig was at a Mexican restaurant in South Norwood, south London. 'My first gag got a laugh, and it completely threw me because I had been rehearsing it without laughs,' he told Laverne. But he recovered and continued his routine, and even got another booking from it. Hill, who won the Perrier Award for best newcomer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1992, said being a comedian means 'I can get away with just about any silly behaviour'. Hill, who created and presented Harry Hill's TV Burp on ITV from 2001 to 2012, said he takes time to prepare ahead of his comedy routines. 'I have to have an hour to myself,' he said. 'It's not a character, it is me. It is a persona, if you like. 'I have to pace up and down and work myself up, because if I don't do that it's not as funny.' Describing how he felt about being a doctor, he told Laverne about an incident soon after he qualified, when he had to break the news to a man that his wife had unexpectedly died during an operation. 'I was completely out of my depth,' he said. 'I told him and he started crying, and I started crying. I thought this is – this isn't good. What it makes you do is bottle up your emotions.' But he added: 'I wasn't a bad doctor.' Among the songs he chose as his desert island discs were Hey Bulldog by the Beatles, Life During Wartime by Talking Heads, and Gay Bar by Electric Six. Hill said a 'thick book you could use to kill small mammals' would be useful, and chose Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. He said his luxury item would be a bucket and spade, because 'where's the fun of a sandy beach without the ability to make sandcastles?'

BBC launches investigation into Strictly stars' ‘cocaine use'

Reports in The Sun allege their drug use was discussed on the BBC dancing show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation. According to reports, the allegations were made in a legal submission by law firm Russells in March on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, who was dropped by the BBC after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour. Others have also reported drug use on the show, according to The Sun. A BBC spokesperson said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. 'We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.' it is understood that the BBC often appoints external law firms to help it lead investigations, while reporting back to an internal team. The cast members involved in the investigation were not named by The Sun. It comes after the BBC launched a review into Strictly in 2024 that looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington. The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made – and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare. This included the introduction of a chaperone who is present 'at all times' during training room rehearsals. EastEnders star James Borthwick was also suspended from the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme.
