Yathindra's comparison of his father to Waidyar king draws flak

The Hindu2 days ago
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Yathindra, MLC, came under criticism on Saturday following his claim that the Congress government led by his father had 'equalled, if not surpassed' the accomplishments of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in terms of grants given to Mysuru and contributing to the welfare of the city.
Responding to his son's comments, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, speaking to reporters at Arsikere in Hassan district on Saturday, chose to skirt the comparison to the iconic Wadiyar king known for his reformist rule, and instead said that his government had outperformed the previous BJP dispensation. 'We have done more work than the BJP,' he said.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders frowned upon Mr. Yathindra for drawing such a comparison. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashok called Mr. Yathindra's comment 'a poor joke'. MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, scion of the Wadiyar family, said there was no need to make any such comparison, as leaders, whether in democracy or monarchy, have the responsibility to serve the people.

‘How did terrorists reach Pahalgam?': in Lok Sabha, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi questions success of Operation Sindoor

Starting the much-awaited debate on the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor and other issues on behalf of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Congress Deputy Leader in the House Gaurav Gogoi said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared a lot of information, but did not mention how five terrorists reached Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22 this year. Speaking immediately after Rajnath, Gogoi directly took him on, saying, 'Rajnath Singh didn't give information on how terrorists reached Pahalgam and killed 26 people.' He said the Opposition's duty was to ask questions for the country. 'The country wants to know how terrorists reached Pahalgam… Their intent was to ruin the economy of Kashmir,' said Gogoi. 'Their intent was Pakistan and India's hyphenation.' Targeting the government over its 'failure' to bring to justice those who killed the tourists in Pahalgam, Gogoi said: 'The country wants to know and those who lost their families want to know how the government couldn't catch those terrorists. The country wants to know how these terrorists were given shelter and information… And 100 days later, the government has no answer. You have drones, Pegasus, and security forces, and you couldn't catch. What kind of arrangement is this? You said that after Article 370, people can go to Kashmir. But we saw unarmed people being killed and it took an hour for an ambulance to reach.' Targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gogoi continued: 'If anyone has to take the responsibility for this, it is the home minister. You can't hide behind the L-G. This government can't hide… This government is so cowardly that they blamed tour operators – that they took people to Baisaran without permission. This is tragic that there is arrogance in the government, and those in power feel no one can ask questions of those who take decisions on intelligence.' He also said that when the attack happened in Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Saudi Arabia, and when he returned, he did not go to Pahalgam, but instead went to Bihar for an election rally. 'If anyone went to Pahalgam, it was our leader Rahul Gandhi. If anyone is demanding martyr status for those killed, it is Rahul Gandhi,' said Gogoi. 'Now it comes to Operation Sindoor. I heard Rajnath Singh's speech. I couldn't understand what time he was talking about. Did he not say after 2016 that they will enter and attack and end terrorism? He said the same after Pulwama… He is saying the same thing today. He is still saying Operation Sindoor is not complete because Pakistan can attack again,' the Congress MP said. 'How was it successful then? They are saying that their intent was not for war. I say it should have been. They say their intent was not to take land. I ask why? When will we take POK? They say their intent was to attack terror infrastructure there. Did we not do it in Uri and Pulwama? During your time, these attacks happened,' he said. Claiming to quote senior officers of the Armed forces, Gogoi said: 'I want to say what senior officers of our Armed forces are saying. We should have heard them in India. We heard them in Singapore…and gave information to Bloomberg.' Gogoi said Pakistan was at the front, but it was China who orchestrated the attacks. 'I would like to ask Rajnath Singh: Why did you not talk of China in your speech when you claim that you will show red eyes to China? I would like to remind that information on two fronts (China and Pakistan) was given by Rahul Gandhi in this House.' He asked the government how much support China was providing to Pakistan. On the ceasefire, Gogoi asked why it happened and added: 'We ask the PM. Why did you stop if Pakistan was ready to get on its knees? The US president, who has said 26 times, he forced India and Pakistan to end the war using trade… Trump is saying five-six jets fell. They cost so much. We ask how many jets fell.' Gogoi said 'traditional ally countries' of India did not support India in the conflict. He also asked why India could not stop the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) loan to Pakistan. 'Don't you have this much power that you can get Pakistan declared a terror state?,' he asked. 'The country and Opposition are with the government. We speak in favour of our armed forces and the country. Don't be scared of the truth,' the MP added.

"Come Back": Mamata Banerjee Says Bengalis Facing Atrocities Outside State

New Delhi, Kolkata: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that Bengalis are facing "atrocities" outside Bengal -- especially in BJP-ruled states -- and urged them to "come back". Alleging that migrant workers from Bengal are facing atrocities in Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Assam, she questioned why the non-Bengali communities cannot offer shelter to Bengalis. "If I can give shelter to everyone here, why can't you? I was told yesterday Bengali's have been asked to leave Delhi within one month," she added, addressing a public meeting in Birbhum. "Those who are facing atrocities in other states -- I tell them to come back. We are ready to assist you. We You will bring you back home in trains. We will share rotis with you. You will be benefited with health schemes," the Chief Minister said today. People from Bangladesh, who have legally entered India post-independence till March 1971, they still speak in a Bangladeshi dialect because that time Bangladesh was part of India, she said. But now they are discriminated against because of their dialect, she said. Underscoring that she is not against any language or any divisive policy, she said, "We want unity in diversity. I never tell any Hindi speaking person to leave Bengal". "When people from Gujarat were pushed by Trump (US President Donald Trump) it was disrespect to Gujaratis. I don't support that. Leaders did not speak a single word on this. People from Bengal are very talented. They work for NASA and other big universities," she said. Ms Banerjee also claimed the current BJP government at the Center will not be able to run till 2029. "What will happen then. Where these BJP men will go? Have you identified any place for that?" she said.

Ensure No Name is Excluded from Voters' List: Mamata's Message to BLOs

Taking to X, National convenor of BJP's IT cell, Amit Malviya said, 'West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is now openly threatening Election Commission officials — saying they work for the state and shouldn't follow directions from the National Election Commission! Why this desperation? To shield her illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya vote bank.' 'She's brazenly opposing a clean, verified voter list — because TMC's survival depends on fake voters. Mamata Banerjee knows that without bogus votes, TMC will collapse. This isn't just political arrogance — it's a direct assault on India's Constitution and democracy!' he alleged. The Chief Minister also asked the BLOs to keep an eye on the names of long-time voters in the state so that they are not left out of the voter list. Giving an example she said, 'Suppose a boy goes on a trip for four days, will you remove his name? Does it happen?' The Chief Minister also advised the District Magistrates to "keep their eyes and ears open", while expressing dissatisfaction with their work. 'The District Magistrates should keep their eyes and ears open. Many times, I see District Magistrates are giving responsibility to someone below them. 1000 people have been taken to Delhi for training. The District Magistrates should have told me or the Chief Secretary. But they did not do that,' she said in the meeting. After Bihar, the Election Commission may start the SIR exercise in West Bengal too. Although the ECI has not made any formal announcement on the date of commencement of this exercise in West Bengal, a section of the BLOs who will be associated with this work has been trained in phases. The training was conducted in Delhi on July 17-18. Similarly, a training programme was organized at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata yesterday. The Chief Minister said that the state was not aware of the ECI training programme in Delhi. Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday alleged that 'the ECI is working as a BJP puppet to favour one party'. He said, 'They are torturing Bengalis in the name of SIR. Yesterday in Bihar, a dog's name was used to issue a residential certificate, and that was used to generate a voter ID card. That means people's right to vote is being taken away, and dogs are getting the certificates.' Meanwhile, in the administrative meeting, West Bengal Chief Minister also raised the issue of "torture" and "harassment" of migrant workers from West Bengal in other states. She ordered to bring back the migrant workers of Bengal who want to return to the state. She asked Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to sit with Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam and West Bengal Minister Malay Ghatak on this issue. Banerjee informed that about 22 lakh migrant workers of the state are working in different states. She said that they will be given 100 days of work when they return to the state. Ration cards and swasthya sathi cards will also be issued to them.
