Kia refreshes Sportage with sharper styling, upgraded tech
Kia has given its popular fifth-generation Sportage a mid-life update, refining the formula that's helped make it a firm favourite in the compact crossover segment.
Visually, the facelift brings the Sportage in line with Kia's newer design language, dubbed "Opposites United". Up front, there's a more sculpted bumper, a bolder take on the signature "Tiger Nose" grille and eye-catching LED Star Map lighting that lends the car a more distinctive look, specially at night. New alloy wheel designs — ranging from 17 to 19 inches — add a bit more road presence, while a revised rear bumper rounds out the exterior tweaks.
Inside, the cabin sees some subtle updates. There's a new two-spoke steering wheel and a sleeker dash design that incorporates hidden air vents for a cleaner finish. There's new seat upholstery – artificial leather and suede depending on the model deriviative – many storage compartments for stashing personal goods and a panoramic sunroof.
Technology has also taken a solid step forward. The driver is greeted by dual 12.3-inch curved displays – one handling infotainment, the other acting as a digital instrument cluster – alongside a new 10-inch head-up display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and over-the-air updates via Kia Connect add convenience when it comes to checking lock status, planning routes or accessing vehicle features remotely.
Other notable features include a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, Kia In-Car Payment, a 360° camera, wireless charging and a Harman Kardon sound system. For added convenience, Digital Key 2.0 lets you access the car using your smartphone – no physical key required.
Under the bonnet, buyers have two options. The standard model features a 1.6l turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW, driving the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The hybrid version uses the same engine, paired with an e-motor and six-speed automatic transmission for a combined 175kW. It's available in front- and all-wheel drive, offering more flexibility depending on your needs.
European sales of the facelifted Sportage are expected to begin by the end of the year, with local launch timing to be confirmed.

The Dark Edition doesn't transform the Territory, but it gives buyers a slightly more distinctive option in a crowded compact SUV market without pushing the price too far up. Hint for South Africa? Mildly restyled Kia Sportage debuts in the UK

Image: Kia Shown in North American guise at the Los Angeles International Auto Show at the end of last year, Kia has taken the wraps off of the facelift Sportage the United Kingdom which provides the likely biggest indication of what the South African-market version could look like. New outside On-sale in the island kingdom from the third quarter of this year, the internally named NQ5 Sportage's first revision since its world debut four years ago consists of a new front bumper, redesigned headlights and daytime running diodes, a tweaked Tiger Nose grille and new alloy wheels ranging from 17-inches to 19-inches on GT-Line models. Transmissions for the former are either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch, with the hybrid having sole access to a unique six-speed automatic. Changes to the rear are subtle. By comparison, the US Sportage has three engine options; a normally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol pumping-out 140 kW, a 1.6-litre hybrid developing 170 kW and a plug-in hybrid that combines the 1.6 with an electric motor and battery pack for a total system output of 200 kW. Confirmation awaited Priced from $28 690 in the United States, which equates to a directly converted R510 628, Kia South Africa is yet to confirm the updated Sportage for the local market, which, if approved, could happen before year-end. As a reminder, the South African range spans six models and five trim levels: LX, EX, GT-Line, GT-Line Plus and GT-Line S, with a choice of two engines; the 1.6 T-GDI rated at 132kW/265Nm and the 1.6 CRDI turbodiesel outputting 100kW/320Nm.
