Madras HC questions why CBFC denied censor certificate to Vetrimaaran's Manushi: ‘Making movie is right to speech'
On Wednesday, the Madras High Court questioned how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) could deny certification to Manushi, as per The Hindu's report. Vetrimaaran moved the court on Tuesday for the film produced by him and directed by N Gopi Nainar after the CBFC reportedly denied them a censor certificate without specifying objectionable scenes. The report states that Justice N Anand Venkatesh questioned how the CBFC denied a certificate without specifying the objectionable scenes, visuals, dialogues, music or other content that's to be edited. The judge stated that unless the portions were spelt out, the producer wouldn't know which parts of the film to tweak or edit, leading to monetary loss.
'Making a movie is a part of the right to speech and expression. As such, the filmmakers are already suffering from a lot of difficulties. You cannot deny certification for an entire movie without specifying the objectionable portions and expect a filmmaker to shoot the entire movie afresh,' said the judge.
The CBFC was given until 16 June to provide a list of objectionable portions or to watch the film with Vetrimaaran and point out the scenes to him.
The judge was reportedly told that the examining committee and the screening committee of the CBFC had recommended against certifying the film for five reasons. The certification board reportedly stated that Manushi went against the integrity of the State, had contemptuous scenes, defamed government policies, portrayed stereotypes leading to the north-south divide and had scenes against the country's interest.
The judge sought CBFC's response by 11 June over this claim, reportedly stating, 'These conclusions are not subjective but based on objective facts, which are discernible from various scenes in the movie. Therefore, if at all the petitioner is required to edit those portions, he must be informed about the specific portions that required such editing.'
Vetrimaaran produced Manushi under Grassroot Film Company, and Gopi of Aramm-fame directed it. Andrea Jeremiah plays the lead role in the film, which also stars Nasser, Tamizh, Hakkim Shah, and Balaji Sakthivel. Ilaiyaraaja has composed the film's music, and Vijay Sethupathi released the film's trailer in April last year. Manushi sees the custodial torture of a woman suspected of being a terrorist.

Hindu Munnani moves High Court seeking grant of permission for setting up temporary miniatures of Lord Murugan's six abodes
Hindu Munnani has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the authorities concerned to grant permission for setting up temporary miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu' scheduled be held in Madurai. Justice B. Pugalendhi directed the Madurai City Police to file a counter affidavit. The court was hearing the petition filed by Hindu Munnani's State Secretary S. Muthukumar of Madurai. The petitioner said Hindu Munnani had decided to arrange a gathering of devotees of Lord Murugan on June 22 for the event in Amma Thidal near Pandi Kovil Ring Road. Miniatures of Arupadai Veedugal will be installed, pujas will be performed and prasadam will be distributed to the devotees, he said, adding that sthalapuranam of the six abodes will be displayed. Apart from this, the devotees will be chanting Kanda Shashti Kavacham and Thiruppugazh at the conference. Spiritual and cultural programmes will be held. The place of gathering was a private land and the land owner had given his consent, he said. A representation was made to the Madurai City Police seeking permission to use sound amplifiers during the event. There was no response from the police. The police have been regularly granting permission for using sound amplifiers in Amma Thidal for public meetings. A representation was also made for arranging darshan of the miniatures from June 10 to June 22. The police rejected permission for usage of microphone sets and to set up miniatures and temporary models, the petitioner said. He alleged that the police team came to the place where the miniatures were being made and threatened the workers and volunteers asking them not proceed with the making of the miniatures. The petitioner sought a direction to the police to grant permission to set up the miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the venue and conduct the pujas. The court posted the matter for hearing on June 9.

Consecration of temple on DD Health's office premises in Madurai draws flak
As against the rules of the Government of Tamil Nadu, a religious event subsequent to the construction of a temple-like structure was conducted on the office premises of Deputy Director of Health Services in Madurai on Thursday and Friday. An invitation which was allegedly released by the district health services office mentions that as a temple belonging to a particular religion was being raised on the office premises, the office staff and others were invited to attend the consecrating event and homam during 6 p.m to 9 p.m on June 5 and from 9 a.m to 1 p.m on June 6, said sources. Anand Raj, a social activist based in Madurai, said that a district health office was a place where people of all religions visit for health-related reasons. As per several Tamil Nadu government rules and Madras High Court orders, conducting of such religious events in a government office, not confined to any particular religion, was against the rules of the State, he added. Particularly, Government Order No. 426, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (Per-A) Department, dated 13.12.1993, prohibited the construction of any new structure for religious worship within the office campus, or enlargement or modification of any existing structure for similar purpose, Mr. Anand Raj stated. Further, he said that the order stressed that, 'It restricted the practice of worship of different faiths in office premises by government staff.' Point 3 of the G.O. pointed out that: 'In view of the direction of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court all Heads of Departments are requested to follow the above instructions scrupulously and it is the responsibility of the Head of Department/Head of Office to ensure that the prohibition made under the said G.O. is implemented in letter and spirit. The Heads of departments are also requested to instruct all the sub-ordinate offices under their control to follow the instructions issued in G.O. Ms. No. 426, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, without fail.' Citing the instructions of the order, Mr. Anand Raj said that while it was the duty of higher officials to ensure such events do not take place, it is learned that Director of Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Madurai Deputy Director of Health Services have headed and took part in the event. 'When the State government espouses or follows the principle of secularism, such religious events in government offices should be prevented and strict action should be taken against those who disrespect the orders,' he stated. A health official, who did not want to be named said, the invitation for the event was shared with the doctors, staff and officials though a What's App group. Madurai district Collector M.S. Sangeetha said that she did not receive any information about such an event. 'I will look into it and take necessary action,' she added.

Madras HC Rejects NEET 2025 Re-Exam pleas, Clears Way For Result Declaration
Last Updated: The Madras High Court has cleared the way for the declaration of NEET UG 2025 results by dismissing pleas that sought to stop it due to power outages at Chennai centres. The Madras High Court on Friday cleared the path for the declaration of NEET (UG) 2025 results by dismissing a batch of petitions that sought to restrain the National Testing Agency (NTA) from releasing the results, as reported by news agency PTI. The petitions, filed by S Sai Priya and 15 other students, requested the court to direct the NTA to conduct a re-examination for candidates who experienced power outages at four exam centres in Chennai during the test. Dismissing the plea, Justice C Kumarappan said, 'In the present case, I find no mala fide intent on the part of the respondents. Nationwide, approximately 22 lakh students appeared for the NEET (UG) 2025. Allowing a re-exam based on such localised and minor disruptions would undermine the level playing field for millions of candidates." The court, therefore, found no merit in the writ petitions. Previously, on May 17, a vacation bench had issued an interim order restraining the NTA from declaring the results, in response to the alleged difficulties caused by the power disruption. In his detailed ruling, Justice Kumarappan noted, 'The petitioners primarily argue that due to power failure, lighting conditions were inadequate at the centres, creating a distracting atmosphere that affected their focus and performance." The judge emphasised that the disruption was due to unexpected rain and storm. Supporting the NTA's stance, the court observed that the exam was held during daylight hours—between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM—ensuring sufficient natural light. 'When the NTA, following field verification and applying scientific methods, has concluded that no re-examination is necessary, such a decision should be respected unless proven to be influenced by mala fides," Justice Kumarappan added. NEET PG 2025 Exam on August 3 The Supreme Court on Thursday gave permission to the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to hold the NEET-PG 2025 exam on August 3. The court said it was satisfied that the reasons given by the NBE for choosing this date were genuine. Earlier, on May 30, the court had ruled that the exam must be held in a single shift instead of two. Because of this change, the NBE asked for more time to make new arrangements, which the court has now allowed. First Published: June 06, 2025, 19:33 IST
