Durand Cup trophies showcased as Shillong gears up to host tournament for second consecutive year
The three trophies of the Durand Cup were showcased here at the State Convention Centre in the presence of Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, who was the Chief Guest of the event.
Also present were Shakliar Warjri, Honourable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya; Air Marshal Surat Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command; and Lt. Gen. Sanjay Malik, General Officer Commanding 101 Area, along with officials of IndianOil Corporation Limited (IOCL).
The three glittering pieces of silverware, the Durand Cup, the original prize and the rolling Shimla Trophy (presented by residents of Shimla in 1904), as well as the President's Cup which the winners keep permanently, will be then taken on a roadshow later in the day covering prominent city landmarks increasing the anticipation for the football loving public.
Speaking on the occasion, Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, said, 'I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Indian Armed Forces for having selected Shillong also as one of the venues to host the 134th Durand Cup. There will be eight matches at the JN Sports Complex, Shillong. We had a very successful season last year, where I can proudly say that Shillong was one of the best hosts, in terms of atmosphere, arrangements, and fan turnout. I can assure you that this year also, it will be the same. We have more local teams participating this time, which makes it more engaging for the fans of Shillong and the people of Meghalaya.'
Shakliar Warjri, Sports Minister, in his address, emphasised the state's passion for football, citing the immense enthusiasm during the previous edition of the Durand Cup. He stated that the Government of Meghalaya is committed to providing top-notch facilities for the development of sports.
The Minister reaffirmed the Government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure, stating its plan to construct one of the biggest football stadiums in Asia, at Mawkhanu, with a capacity to host 40,000 people. He stated that the core aim of the Government is to produce Olympians from the State of Meghalaya.

The trophies will embark on a roadshow starting from the State Conventional Centre and will travel through Camel Back Road, IGP - All Saints Church, Barik, Malki, Dhanketi, Don Bosco, Laitmukrah Police Point, Beat House, Fire Brigade, Nongthymmai, Super Care Road, Rynjah, Nongrim Hills, St Edmund's School, Civil Hospital and ending at Khyndailad where a performance by the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project and band performance by the Territorial Army Battalion Band will welcome the trophies.
A total of eight matches will be played in Shillong with the first match scheduled on 26th July. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will see city rivals Shillong Lajong FC and Rangdajied United FC fighting out in the Shillong derby, along with defending champions NorthEast United FC paving the way for some exciting northeast derbies.
The Malaysia Services team will be the fourth team in the group, adding an international flavour to the tournament. Shillong Lajong made a fairy tale run in the last season, topping Group F ahead of FC Goa and beat Kolkata giants East Bengal SC in the quarter finals to qualify for the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual champions NorthEast United. KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) marked its 50th anniversary on Saturday with a bold pledge — to return football to its roots and revive the game where it truly belongs: among the people. No longer defined by just roaring crowds at Merdeka Stadium or professional glories, KLFA is shifting its focus to public parks, school fields, and grassroots pitches across the capital. "We want long-term, balanced growth across all levels," said Fahmi. While planning for the future, KLFA still takes pride in KL City FC, which it hails as a symbol of urban resilience and fighting spirit. Fahmi stressed the need for a clear pathway from community football to the professional stage. Football fraternity questions MFL over Kelantan Darul Naim exemption
KUALA LUMPUR: Why is Kelantan Darul Naim still in the Super League despite flouting club licensing rules? Kelantan Darul Naim's green light to compete in next season's Super League has sparked outrage, with critics accusing the Malaysia Football League (MFL) of undermining its own standards, particularly the requirement for clubs to run youth development teams. Dr Faithal Hassan, Deputy Dean at Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science, warned the decision could set a dangerous precedent and weaken the long-term health of Malaysian football. "It's unfair to the clubs that have complied fully with the licensing rules and invested heavily in youth development," he said. "These regulations are meant to ensure continuity and sustainability. Granting exemptions just to make up the numbers defeats the purpose, especially when youth setups require time, effort and significant resources." According to the 2023 MFL Club Licensing Regulations, clubs must operate at least four youth squads, including a mandatory Under-17 and Under-10, with at least three more between the Under-18 and Under-23 range. These teams must compete in recognised tournaments endorsed by FAM or MFL. Yet Kelantan Darul Naim, the only team in next season's 13-club Super League without any Youth or President's Cup side, were still awarded a licence. Newcomers Immigration FC also lack youth teams but, like Melaka FC, who both played in the A1 League last year, have been granted a transitional year. Melaka, however, have already met the youth team criteria by registering sides in FAM competitions. Kelantan, critics argue, no longer meet the basic requirements after restructuring their setup, yet MFL still gave them the green light, a move many see as a step backwards. "There's a serious flaw when exemptions are handed out selectively," said Faithal. "If some clubs can skip youth development while others invest heavily, it creates an uneven playing field. Worse still, it could deter clubs from prioritising grassroots development, which is vital for the national pipeline." Faithal also dismissed MFL's justification that Kelantan met the youth requirement last season as flawed. "The Super League is not a 'practice ground'. Any club entering must be fully ready. Otherwise, we'll continue facing the same old issues — salary arrears, mismanagement and club withdrawals," he said. In response, the MFL stated that Kelantan's licence was granted based on their compliance in the previous cycle. "Last season, they had youth squads, so their application was in order," MFL said. But that explanation has failed to appease many within the football fraternity, who say consistent and transparent enforcement is crucial to restoring faith in the league. Faithal also criticised the lack of transparency in how rules are enforced. "Every year, the regulations change or are applied differently often to suit certain teams. This selective flexibility is hurting the league's credibility," he said. "The only way forward is to publish the licensing regulations in full and enforce them across the board." He added that unresolved salary issues, the over-reliance on naturalised players and the dwindling number of teams in the top flight paint a worrying picture.
