Bersih flags alleged misuse of govt resources in Ayer Kuning by-election, cites events attended by Zahid, Mat Sabu and Saarani
In a statement, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections cited three key incidents that it said violated the principles of free and fair elections, potentially undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
'Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pledged on April 12 that development projects in Ayer Kuning would continue if the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate wins the by-election,' Bersih said, describing the statement as a conditional promise that constitutes an abuse of government resources.
Bersih said at a separate event in Tapah, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu was reportedly seen distributing 'duit raya' to attendees during a meet-and-greet session organised by the Farmers' Organisation Authority.
It said could be considered inducement of voters under the Election Offences Act 1954.
Bersih also criticised the presence of Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad at an official state programme titled 'Town Hall with Youth' at the Tapah Sports Complex.
Saarani had reportedly appeared alongside the BN candidate, alleging this amounted to a misuse of government machinery for campaign purposes.
'These incidents reflect a clear breach of the principle separating government functions from party activities,' the group said.
Bersih called on the Election Commission to issue firm guidelines to prevent such conduct and urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate possible elements of political corruption related to the campaign.
The group further warned that such abuses of power during elections could erode public trust and damage democratic processes.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had defended Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming for announcing the RM6.13 million in allocations for 33 development and public infrastructure projects in Tapah.
Anwar clarified that the announcement of development project allocations was made before the nomination day for the upcoming Ayer Kuning by-election, and warned that any announcement of government allocations must not be made during an election period.
The Ayer Kuning by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on February 22. Early voting starts today.
This by-election sees a three-cornered fight between BN candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir; Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek; and Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) candidate Bawani KS.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The government is confident that the establishment of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission will create a more systematic, focused, and industry-responsive ecosystem. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the establishment of the commission would also optimise resources, prevent wastage, and overlapping of functions among TVET-related ministries and institutions. 'During the tabling of the 13MP (13th Malaysia Plan), Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) stated the intention to strengthen the implementation of the National TVET Policy 2030 through the TVET Commission. Responding to an interjection from Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor) on the involvement of Chinese youth in TVET, the Minister of Rural and Regional Development agreed that promotion, information dissemination, and access to application processes and course offerings must be enhanced. He also praised Lee, who is himself a TVET graduate, for his commitment to efforts in encouraging secondary school students and school leavers to pursue the field. 'The collaboration with him has also drawn Chinese students into TVET. He has become a catalyst in encouraging Chinese students to join TVET, which is a success for the TVET Council thanks to his efforts,' he said. On the proposed amendments to the Land Act (Group Settlement Areas) 1960 (Act 530), following issues related to Felda land inheritance, Ahmad Zahid said that the government began the review of the act in September 2022 through coordination meetings, technical committee meetings, workshops, and four engagement sessions with the stakeholders in 2024. He said following this, five main priorities have been highlighted, covering contributions to national policy; protection of GSA land ownership interests; strengthening governance; meeting the needs of the new generation of Felda settlers; and empowering the act to remain relevant.

'The TVET Commission will regulate institutions, monitor strategy implementation, and ensure inter-ministerial coordination,' he said during the Dewan Rakyat session. Responding to Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor), Ahmad Zahid acknowledged the need for better outreach to Chinese youth regarding TVET opportunities. He commended Lee, a TVET graduate, for actively promoting vocational education among students. 'His efforts have successfully encouraged Chinese students to join TVET programmes,' Ahmad Zahid added. Felda enhances employment scheme with RM1,700 minimum wage
KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Land Development Authority is enhancing its employment scheme with a RM1,700 minimum wage and a motorbike allowance, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said Felda currently employs 12,587 foreign workers on its estates as of July, with recruitment managed through Felda Plantation Management Sdn Bhd. 'To overcome the shortage of workers, Felda is also providing housing, Employees Provident Fund and Social Security Organisation contributions, as well as insurance coverage,' he said. Ahmad Zahid said this while winding up debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (August 18). He said Felda was approved to recruit 3,000 foreign workers on July 27, 2024, and the quota was fully filled by March this year. Ahmad Zahid said the agency has streamlined the Small-Scale Contracting initiative to allow Felda settlers to participate as small contractors. He said larger agriculture tenders are being offered to qualified Felda-owned companies, adding that deductions from produce are used to cover estate operating costs, settlers' loans, and the Replanting Contribution Fund, which carries a guarantee. 'The Estate Insurance Collection was discontinued in June 2022, with estate recovery now managed at the scheme level,' said Dr Ahmad Zahid. 'The Replanting Fund remains, with deductions of RM12 per acre per month, though it is being reviewed to reflect current costs,' he added. Dr Ahmad Zahid then said that Felda also enforces a minimum income policy, where any costs or deductions that cannot be collected will be deferred and recovered the following month.
