These are all of L.A.'s 2025 James Beard Awards finalists

Time Out07-05-2025
The votes for 2025 are in: Six L.A. chefs, restaurants, bars, bakeries and writers have been named James Beard Awards finalists. Known widely as the 'Oscars of food,' the awarding body recognizes chefs, restauranteurs, bar directors, authors and journalists across the nation.
While the restaurant and chef awards were first announced on April 2, the media awards weren't announced until today. Whittled down from 16 semifinalists, just three L.A. County chefs, restaurants and bakeries have advanced to the final round: Kato 's Jon Yao in 'Best Chef: California' category; Redbird 's Tobin Shea in 'Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service'; and Gusto Bread in Long Beach—which I consider one of the city's best bakeries, and totally worth the drive—for 'Outstanding Bakery.'
In the media category, three local journalists from the Los Angeles Times have picked up nominations. Critic Bill Addison received a nomination in 'Dining and Travel' for his guide to San Francisco and columnist Jenn Harris was also recognized for her work in the 'Craig Claiborne Distinguished Criticism' category. In 'Home Cooking,' senior editor Danielle Dorsey received a nomination for her recipe and reporting package on Black Thanksgiving traditions.
Within Southern California, a few of our neighbors in Orange County also picked up nominations: Anaheim tiki bar Strong Water (Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program) and Daniel Castillo of San Juan Capistrano's Heritage Barbecue (Best Chef: California).
The James Beard Foundation's annual awards 'recognize exceptional talent in the culinary and food media industries.' For 2025, the 35th edition, the foundation has added three new bar-focused categories. Last year, Lord Maynard Llera of Kuya Lord won 'Best Chef: California'

Emma Stone makes rare remark about her four-year-old daughter Louise: 'The greatest gift of my life'

Emma Stone might have two Oscars on her shelf, but at home, she's more likely to be found baking cookies and watching Bluey with her daughter, Louise Jean. The La La Land actress, who welcomed her daughter, four, with husband Dave McCary in March 2021, is famously private. She's never posted about Louise Jean on social media — in fact, Stone, 36, is not on social media at all — and even kept her pregnancy under wraps at the time. But in a new interview with Vogue, she offered a rare, heartfelt glimpse into her life as a mom, complete with pumpkin oatmeal desserts and cartoon marathons. 'There's nothing I feel luckier about,' Stone says of her little girl, reportedly named after her great-grandmother Jean Louise. 'She's the greatest gift of my life, for sure.' The star has fully embraced life's quieter moments with her mini-me, from making memories in the kitchen to watching the Bluey episode, Sleepytime, countless times. Close friend and Superbad co-star Martha MacIsaac praised Stone for parenting with 'grace.' 'Motherhood can be so difficult, and she's handling it with grace,' MacIsaac shares, adding that she even FaceTimed Stone during both of her labors. 'Her medical advice is very sound.' After giving birth in 2021, Stone took a step back from Hollywood, but she's now returning to the big screen with upcoming films Eddington and Bugonia. Still, motherhood has shifted how she chooses projects. 'It's streamlined everything,' she explains. 'It's a clichéd thing to say, but it changes everything. And simplifies everything.' Before signing onto a film, she now asks herself whether it's worth being away from her daughter for long stretches. That shift has also deepened her craft. 'I do think it unlocks different things,' Stone says when asked if being a parent has made her a better actor. 'I don't know if it's specifically that, but I feel everything I could possibly feel, because everything has exploded.' 'There's nothing I feel luckier about,' Stone says of her little girl, reportedly named after her great-grandmother Jean Louise. 'She's the greatest gift of my life, for sure' (seen in June 2025) Stone even gave her daughter a sweet shout-out at the 2024 Academy Awards, where she won her second Best Actress award for Poor Things. Just days before Louise Jean's third birthday, Stone told the audience, 'And, most importantly, my daughter, who's gonna be three in three days and has turned our lives technicolor. I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.' In 2021, Stone called motherhood 'very exciting.' When asked by Mark Heyes how lockdown had been for her, she replied: '. I feel lucky with what lockdown has been but it has been an insane year.' She shares Louise with her comedian husband, who she wed in 2020, four years after they met when she hosted Saturday Night Live.

Another huge US star reveals exit plans from US after Donald Trump's warning

Jimmy Kimmel has joined a string of celebrities who have obtained citizenship to other countries over growing fears concerning President Donald Trump's leadership. Comedians Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres were among those fleeing the US after the 79-year-old returned to the White House for a second term at the beginning of the year. In a new interview, the Jimmy Kimmel Live presenter explained things are 'so much worse' in the country than people initially thought they would be, and revealed that he sought citizenship in Europe. During an appearance on the Sarah Silverman Podcast, the host said: 'A lot of people I know are thinking about where they can get citizenship.' 'I did get Italian citizenship,' he replied. 'What's going on [with Trump] is as bad as you thought it was going to be.' 'It's so much worse. It's just unbelievable. I feel like it's probably even worse than he would like it to be.' Kimmel's comments come after Trump suggested he could lose his job in a gloating post on social media, following the news that TV legend Stephen Colbert's show was coming to an end. 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,' he posted on Truth Social last month. 'His talent was even less than his ratings. 'I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!' In a press conference last week, he doubled down on the claims, warning: 'Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They're next. 'They're going to be going. I hear they're going to be going.' Kimmel has been a staple of our screens for decades, having helmed his own late night show since 2003 – he also hosted the Oscars and Emmy Awards multiple times, and voices characters in the Paw Patrol movie and Boss Baby over the years. Despite Trump's recent comments, he insisted that he has no ill will to any supporters who may now be regretting their vote. 'I think the door needs to stay open,' he demanded. 'If you want to change your mind, that's so hard to do. 'If you want to admit you were wrong, that's so hard and so rare to do. You are welcome.' A number of stars have decided to leave America following the recent election, after Trump beat Kamala Harris to return to power for a second time. Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, swapped the US for a quieter life in the Cotswolds while Rosie – who has had a long-running feud with the politician – headed to Ireland. More Trending She was joined by her child, who is non-binary and goes by Clay, and shared that she needed to make the move for her family, and her 'own sanity'. Shedding light on the move while appearing on the Late Late Show, she said: 'The President of the United States has it out for me and has for 20 years, when I told the truth about him on a program called The View – where it was my job to talk about pop culture, politics… 'I mentioned his bankruptcies, I mentioned all of the sexual assault charges and I mentioned that he was not, in fact, the businessman that everyone thinks he is because of the show, The Apprentice, where they sold a bunch of lies to America for over 10 years, and half of America believed it. Brooklyn Beckham follows in David's footsteps as he 'reveals plans to buy a Napa Valley winery for his wife Nicola Peltz'

is reportedly following in his father David's footsteps and has plans to buy a vineyard for his wife Nicola Peltz. The aspiring chef and wine lover, 26, - who is currently based in LA with wife Nicola, 30, - has big dreams to own a winery in Napa, according to a new report. News of the plans come as the Beckham family feud is continuing to rumble on, with Brooklyn and Nicola renewing their vows this past weekend without any of their family present. David reportedly purchased a private vineyard in Napa Valley for his wife Victoria back in 2008 - though its location and details have always been kept a secret, claims The Sun via Hello! Magazine. David reportedly presented Victoria with the surprise during a trip the US and unveiled the vineyard by gifting Victoria a bottle of wine with her name on the label. A source told The Sun at the time: 'The Beckhams became wine buffs when he played in Spain. The vineyard went down a storm with Victoria. She was delighted.' And following in his footsteps, now Hello! magazine reports that Brooklyn's 'ultimate desire' is to own a winery in Napa. They report: 'His ultimate desire is to open his own winery in Napa with enough land for Nicola to not only rescue as many dogs as possible but for them to also raise miniature cattle.' Representatives for Brooklyn have been contacted by Daily Mail for comment. Unlike other celebrities Victoria and David haven't publicly marketed any wines from their vineyard and the exact value of the whole property isn't publicly available. But Hello reports that the vineyard sits in the grounds of a mansion and is 'valued at many millions of dollars'. As well as the Napa Valley vineyard David and Victoria used to own a £1.5million villa in St Tropez which had its own vineyard. In 2003, when David left Manchester United, he and Victoria splashed out on the holiday home near St Tropez. The property had 34 rooms, a heated pool and its own vineyard along with a private chapel. They put in a large amount of money for renovations, adding a black marble kitchen, Moroccan-style pool house and chintzy living room. In the early years, before David went to play for LA Galaxy, the family used to spend their holidays there. It was put up for sale in 2015 for £2.5 million and was re-listed for £2.4 million in 2016, after the couple realised that they never used the house yet were still paying for its staff and upkeep. The winery revelations come after heartbroken David and Victoria fear their eldest son Brooklyn has 'quit the family' after he failed to invite any of his relatives to his secret vow renewal. Brooklyn and wife Nicola, who first wed in 2022, said 'I do' for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family who had key roles in the day, with the Beckham clan nowhere in sight. Nicola wore her 70-year-old mother's vintage 1985 bridal gown for the big day, while her father Nelson, 83, was given the key role of officiating. Brooklyn's parents and siblings Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14, reportedly only found out about their big day after reading about it on a US website. Their eldest son has become increasingly estranged from the family ever since he snubbed his father's 50th birthday, and now, the family fear it's a final kick in the teeth for the family. A source told The Sun: 'This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria. Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. 'His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them.' The source added: 'It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy - and see no way back. 'Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the 'Beckham' surname - will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 - is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? It certainly feels like it.'. Daily Mail has contacted Brooklyn, Nicola and the Beckhams' representatives for comment. Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in a lavish £3million ceremony in 2022, when relations first began to sour with his parents in the run-up to the big day. After shunning a dress made by her fashion designer Victoria in favour of a Valentino gown in 2022 - a choice which wasn't well received - Nicola once again snubbed her mother-in-law and wore her mother Claudia's vintage wedding gown. It is a poignant message to Posh and Becks', whom he and Nicola have grown increasingly estranged over recent months. All the while the Beckhams were said to be upset by the Peltzes in 2022 who they felt were taking over the wedding. And ever since their first big nuptials in April 2022, the two families have not reunited and Nicola has rarely been pictured with the Beckhams. Brooklyn and wife Nicola , who first wed in 2022, said 'I do' for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family who had key roles in the day, with the Beckham clan nowhere in sight (their engagement post pictured) The couple shared the images on Instagram on Monday, alongside the words 'only love.' Nicola wore the same original $1.8mill ring set adding a glinting filter onto the dazzling jewels. Brooklyn described the vow renewal as a 'really beautiful experience' while admitting he is still head-over-heels for his wife. Speaking for the first time about the day, the 26-year-old admitted he'd happily do it 'every single day' if he could. Brooklyn said the moment was all about creating a 'really cute memory' they'd treasure forever.
