Rain and thunder showers are expected in Gauteng this afternoon

Gauteng residents can expect afternoon and evening thunder showers on Saturday. According to weather forecaster Joel Guy, the eastern provinces will see renewed rainfall activity this weekend.
'Saturday we are going to once again see some afternoon and evening thunder showers across the eastern provinces,' said Guy.
While Johannesburg will enjoy mostly sunny conditions early in the day, isolated thunder showers could develop later in the afternoon.
The mercury is forecast to peak at around 21°C in Johannesburg and 22°C in Pretoria. The chilly morning conditions, however, will persist, with parts of the interior starting the day near freezing. Eastern Cape and interior remain cold, mirroring Gauteng's cold morning
The weather pattern across the interior regions of the country, including parts of the Eastern Cape, mirrors Gauteng's cold morning.
Temperatures in Bethlehem also hovered around freezing, while areas like Mthatha and Matatiele in the Eastern Cape started the morning at 6°C. Despite the cold start, most of the region will warm slightly by midday before isolated thunder showers move in.
While inland regions shiver, coastal areas are set for milder conditions. Cape Town recorded a morning low of 10°C, while minimums along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline were mid-teens.
'It is going to stay fine for much of the interior, but the eastern areas will become partly cloudy later on with isolated thunder showers,' Guy explained.

KwaZulu-Natal coastal damaging waves warnings remain in place

KwaZulu-Natal will see warm and partly cloudy weather along the coast on Saturday, while inland areas remain cooler and unsettled. Forecaster Joel Guy confirmed the weather service still has a warning in place for damaging waves. 'We still have that warning for damaging waves along the KwaZulu-Natal coastal areas,' said Guy. Coastal towns like Durban and Richards Bay are expected to start the day with minimums in the mid-teens and remain mostly dry during the day. While the coast is milder, the interior will wake to cold temperatures. Pietermaritzburg and surrounding towns could see minimums as low as 6°C. 'It's freezing for Bethlehem, and also quite cold in Pietermaritzburg and Kokstad,' said Guy. Isolated thundershowers may develop in the afternoon, particularly over the western interior. The South Coast and adjacent inland regions face a 30% to 60% chance of rain. As the day progresses, conditions will become increasingly cloudy across the eastern half of the KwaZulu-Natal. However, Guy noted that it would 'stay fine for much of the day' before thundershowers appear late afternoon and early evening. Temperatures are expected to rise to the low 20s in coastal cities, while inland highs may struggle to surpass the mid-teens. Damaging waves and rain are set to hit parts of KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal will face a combination of isolated showers and dangerous sea conditions. A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for damaging waves along the southern coastline. The warning could disrupt sea navigation and affect small vessels in the area. 'Sea users, especially near southern KwaZulu-Natal, should be on high alert,' said Odirile Modipa, a forecaster with the weather service. 'The waves are expected to be strong and damaging.' Inland areas won't be spared from the weather changes either. Rain is expected to extend from the Eastern Cape into KwaZulu-Natal, bringing light but widespread showers across most parts of the province, especially during the morning and afternoon hours. Coastal cities like Durban and Richards Bay will experience maximum temperatures of 22°C and 25°C, respectively. Meanwhile, overnight lows will hover around 13°C in Port St. John's and 14°C in Margate. These conditions, combined with the ongoing rainfall, will keep KwaZulu-Natal cool and damp throughout the day. Further inland, areas such as Ladysmith and Pietermaritzburg can also expect light rain and lower daytime temperatures, with much of the province under partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Although KwaZulu-Natal is unlikely to see snow, the nearby high-altitude areas in Lesotho are expected to receive light snowfall overnight going into tomorrow. This may affect travellers using the Drakensberg routes, particularly those heading toward the Free State or Eastern Cape. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
