Kochi corporation kicks off drive to relocate street vendors
Kochi: In a bid to regulate street vending and ease traffic and pedestrian congestion, Kochi Corporation has initiated steps to relocate street vendors to designated vending zones.
The process will begin next week, starting with vendors operating along Shanmugham Road.
Corporation officials said that notices will be issued to these vendors, asking them to shift to the identified vending zone on Abraham Madamakkal Road. Those who fail to comply will be evicted with the support of the police.
"The corporation will provide kiosks to all the vendors. We have identified vending zones across the city to relocate them.
This initiative aims to improve urban aesthetics while ensuring that vendors' livelihoods are protected," said a senior corporation official.
After the new council assumed office in 2020, an initial survey was carried out to identify street vendors across the city. Based on this, temporary licences were granted. Later, re-surveys were conducted under the leadership of Kudumbashree and the Centre for Socio-Economic-Environmental Studies (CSES) to identify more eligible vendors.

As a result, 2,351 vendors were approved through the town vending committee (TVC) following several verification processes.
The corporation entrusted CSES with preparing the vending plan, which proposed 69 vending zones. These zones were approved by the TVC and the corporation council before being submitted to the state govt.
In 2024, the Kerala govt officially approved the street vending zones and the supporting bylaw.
However, concerns remain about the implementation. "While relocating vendors, the corporation must ensure that vacated spaces are not reoccupied by new vendors. Without strict enforcement, this move will fail to achieve its objective," said MG Aristotle, secretary of the UDF parliamentary party in the corporation.
Lack of adequate space is another major challenge. Aristotle pointed out that the corporation had previously promised to relocate around 40 vendors from outside Ernakulam Market to within the market premises.
"That promise remains unfulfilled. These vendors are still outside the market," he said.
In Fort Kochi and adjacent divisions, the number of vendors identified officially is around 300, but more than 300 vendors are operating along the Fort Kochi Beach alone. Addressing such inconsistencies will be critical as the corporation rolls out its vendor rehabilitation programme.

Fish boom: Local entrepreneurs thrive as output triples in state
Patna: Women and small-scale entrepreneurs in Bihar are reaping the benefits of the state's fisheries initiatives with fish production tripling over the past two decades. Jyotsna Singh from Pura village in Samastipur district has become self-reliant through fish seed production and now employs 20 people. She received a grant of Rs15 lakh in 2023 from the fisheries department to set up a hatchery, which proved highly successful. Similarly, Laxmi Sahni, Sheela Devi, Pramod Kumar Sahni, Rani Kumari and Seeti Devi from Raipur village in Sarairanjan block are engaged in fish farming over approximately eight hectares. They produce 10-15 tonnes of fish annually, earning Rs13 to Rs18 lakh. A state govt report released on Friday revealed that fish production in Bihar rose from 2.68 lakh metric tonnes in 2005 to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24, a threefold increase over 19 years. Officials said this growth was driven by several schemes under the state's agriculture road map, including the Chief Minister Integrated Wetland Development Scheme, Reservoir Fisheries Development Scheme, Private Pond Renovation Scheme, the River Restoration Programme and the centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Under the Wetland Development Scheme, 461 hectares have been converted for fish farming. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Model-based pond construction in districts with abundant wetlands is rapidly increasing output. Crypto income on I-T radar; department sends emails to individuals
The Income Tax Department has sent a communication to thousands of individuals who have undertaken cryptocurrency transactions but failed to reflect this income in their returns, official sources said Friday. These transactions pertain to assessment years 2023-24 and 2024-25, they said. The department and its policy-making body, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), suspect tax evasion and money laundering by certain "high-risk" people who are potentially using "unaccounted" income to invest in virtual digital assets (VDAs), commonly known as cryptocurrency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 23.7% Returns in last 5 years with Shriram Life's ULIP Shriram Life Insurance Undo Sources told PTI that the I-T Department has sent e-mails to thousands of defaulting people nudging them to file an updated Income Tax Return (ITR) if any income on account of crypto transactions has not been declared or mis-declared by them. This communication is part of the NUDGE (Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable) campaign undertaken by the department with a philosophy of "trust taxpayers first" philosophy. Live Events According to section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act (provided by the Finance Act of 2022), a flat tax rate of 30 per cent (plus applicable surcharge and cess) is levied on income from crypto transfers. The provision does not allow deduction of any expenses except the cost of acquisition. Further, set-off of losses from crypto investment or trading is not allowed to be set off against any other income or for carry forward to subsequent years. Sources indicated that data analytics done by the tax department has shown that a "significant" number of people have not filed the Schedule VDA (for crypto) in their ITRs, and such people were offering tax on the income earned at a lower rate or claiming cost indexation. It is understood that the ITRs filed by taxpayers are being verified by the department with tax deducted at source (TDS) returns filed by various cryptocurrency exchanges (Virtual Asset Service Providers), and the defaulters may be selected for further "verification or scrutiny". This is the third in the NUDGE series campaign undertaken by the I-T Department and the CBDT, where they gently remind taxpayers about their liabilities. The previous two were related to seeking correct declarations on foreign assets and income by taxpayers and withdrawal of bogus claims of deduction under section 80GGC of the I-T Act.
