'KPop Demon Hunters' on track to become Netflix's top animated film as soundtracks dominates Billboard charts

Express Tribune16-07-2025
Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters is rapidly climbing towards becoming the platform's most-watched animated film to date. With over 80 million views in just four weeks, it is on pace to surpass past animated hits such as Leo and The Sea Beast and covet the title of Netflix's most-watched original animated movie ever.
Released on June 20, the film merges fantasy and music through the journey of Huntrix, a virtual K-pop girl group battling demons. Its bold visuals, vibrant character design, and original soundtrack have resonated strongly with audiences globally. The film's momentum is now mirrored in the music charts, reinforcing its multi-platform success.
The song Golden, performed by Huntrix, recently topped both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts—marking the first time a virtual group has achieved the number one position globally.
Tracks from rival group Saja Boys also broke into the Billboard Global 200, with Your Idol reaching third and Soda Pop at sixth. The film's soundtrack placed second on the Billboard 200 albums chart and currently holds eight positions on the Billboard Hot 100.
Widespread fan engagement, merchandise sales, and global chart performance highlight the film's broad appeal and potential longevity.
As KPop Demon Hunters continues its record-breaking ascent, it signals a new era for animated musical storytelling, one that blends digital innovation with global pop influence.

Joe Locke wraps Heartstopper finale filming: 'Bye Charlie'

Heartstopper star Joe Locke has officially wrapped filming on the highly anticipated finale of the hit Netflix adaptation, signaling the end of an emotional journey for fans of the show. Locke shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing 'Bye Charlie X' alongside behind-the-scenes images with co-star Kit Connor, thanking fans and the creative team behind the series. The final chapter of Heartstopper, based on the sixth volume of Alice Oseman's beloved graphic novel series, was adapted as a film instead of a traditional season. Directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) and written by Oseman herself, the finale has been in production for nearly two months. Kit Connor also confirmed the wrap via social media, closing the book on Nick and Charlie's story. In the final chapter, the couple faces the challenges of a long-distance relationship as Nick prepares to leave for university and Charlie gains new independence at school. Their emotional journey mirrors the personal growth of their circle of friends as they navigate love, change, and letting go. Speaking to The Playlist, Locke explained that filming a feature-length finale was a practical decision. 'We realized the only way to get it made this year is if we do a film… It makes it feel more cinematic and gives it the ending it deserves,' he said. The Heartstopper finale film now moves into post-production, with fans eagerly awaiting its release and one last goodbye to Charlie and Nick's coming-of-age story.

Happy Gilmore 2 director reflects on unexpected early plot twist involving Virginia Venit's character

Director Kyle Newacheck has shared his initial reaction to the surprising plot development at the start of Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered on Netflix on July 25. Speaking to PEOPLE, Newacheck revealed he was unaware of the major storyline involving Julie Bowen's character, Virginia Venit, until reading the completed screenplay. 'I did not see that coming,' he said. 'I would never have projected that that was going to be the inciting incident for this movie at the start of it.' Virginia, now married to Happy Gilmore and mother to their five children, is killed off in the film's opening moments after being struck in the head by a golf ball hit by her husband. Newacheck noted that the choice made sense in context. 'It's still within the DNA of the universe,' he said, referencing the original 1996 film in which Happy's father dies after being struck by a hockey puck. Bowen also addressed the plot in an interview, recalling her reaction when reading the script while on holiday. 'When I found out that I was killed on page 12, I started laughing,' she said. Despite the outcome, she was pleased to be part of the sequel. 'Of course, why would I not want to be part of Happy Gilmore?' She added that Adam Sandler was committed to involving original cast members in the sequel. Happy Gilmore 2 is currently available to stream on Netflix.
