Fans loved how MLB's new ABS challenge system exposed the umpire's terrible call in real time
If you have tuned in for any of the spring training games thus far, you've probably noticed that MLB has started testing an automated strike zone. And the best part about the system may be that umpires are getting a dose of accountability in real time.
That's exactly what happened on Sunday.
As part of the ABS system being tested in 60% of spring training games, teams are allocated two challenges for balls and strikes (retained with a successful challenge). With Andy Pages at the plate for the Dodgers, the outfielder took exception when home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson rung him up for a bases-loaded strikeout.
Pages immediately tapped his helmet to signal for a challenge, and for good reason. Tomlinson was nowhere close with the call, and the umpire got to see that mistake right away.

Honestly, this beats the regular challenges because the umpires are communicating with the replay center and not always looking at the videoboard. With ABS, the umps get to see the mistake plastered on a big screen.
Now, MLB is only testing this system, and we won't see it in regular season games until 2026 at the earliest. But fans already seem to be enjoying it so far.

Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter reports to prison for stealing nearly $17 million
The former interpreter of Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, Ippei Mizuhara, reported to federal prison in Pennsylvania on Monday, Mizuhara's attorney Michael Freedman confirmed to Fox News Digital. Mizuhara was sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts. Federal prosecutors asked for a 57-month prison sentence while also asking Mizuhara to pay $16.9 million of restitution to Ohtani and another $1.1 million to the IRS. The Dodgers fired Mizuhara in March 2024. Federal investigators filed a complaint against Mizuhara on April 11. One day later, he turned himself in to law enforcement, the Department of Justice confirmed. Mizuhara pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return in June 2024, admitting that he placed about 19,000 bets with the bookie over a two-year period and accumulated over $40 million in debt. Ohtani publicly addressed the gambling scandal in late March, saying he had never placed a sports bet and that Mizuhara's story about paying off his $4.5 million gambling debt was fabricated. Mizuhara was initially ordered to report to prison in March, but a federal judge granted a delay. No reason for the delay has been disclosed. Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter, reports to federal prison for $17 million in theft
On the same day that Shohei Ohtani will pitch in a major league game for the first time since 2023, his former interpreter reported to federal prison in Pennsylvania, ESPN reported. Ippei Mizuhara is serving a 57-month prison sentence for stealing nearly $17 million to pay off gambling debts while employed by Ohtani. Mizuhara, 40, was charged with bank fraud and tax fraud for which he faced up to 33 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended the 57-month sentence while the defense requested 18 months. Advertisement The $17 million is the sum Mizuhara was ordered to pay Ohtani in restitution for the $40.3 million in net losses run up from 19,000 wagers made with bookmaker Mathew Bowyer during a period between December 2021 and January 2024. Bowyer is currently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in August to running an illegal gambling business, money laundering and subscribing a false tax return. Mizuhara was initially ordered to report to prison in March, but was granted a delay by a federal judge. The reason for delay was not given and is under court seal, ESPN's Tisha Thompson reported. The former interpreter is expected to be deported to Japan following his prison term, according to his attorney, Michael Freedman, and prosecutors. Mizuhara grew up in the United States and is a legal permanent resident, but is a citizen of Japan. He came with Ohtani to the U.S. in 2018 when the two-way superstar began his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels. Mizuhara's theft was discovered with at least $4.5 million in wire transfers sent from Ohtani's bank account to an associate of Bowyer's while Bowyer was being investigated by federal authorities. Upon learning of the theft, the Los Angeles Dodgers fired Mizuhara as the 2024 MLB season began. He was formally charged one month later.
