Local film 'Gayong' goes global; to be released in 33 Latin American countries
Its producer Eric Ong said the opportunity arose after his company Movie Move's international marketing representative secured buyers from Latin America who were very interested in films featuring Asian martial arts, including silat, during the recent Cannes Film Festival in France.
"They were clearly drawn to Gayong and considered it an impressive piece with high production quality,' he said in a statement.
He added that the film, produced by SOL Pictures, will be released internationally through digital streaming (OTT) platforms only, and will not be screened in cinemas.
"We are still waiting for the agreement contract between both parties, which is currently in the process of being finalised. What has been communicated to me is that the release will be for OTT platforms. However, no final decision has been made regarding the release date.
"Regardless, I am proud that Gayong can penetrate the Latin American market. It proves that local films and the art of silat have their own unique value and are admired internationally,' he said.
Directed by Faisal Ishak, Gayong opened at cinemas in Malaysia and Brunei on May 8, while its Singapore release is scheduled for May 22.
The cast includes popular actors such as Beto Kusyairy, Nabila Huda, Syafie Naswip and Indonesian actor Yayan Ruhian. – Bernama

True to this spirit of connection, the runway itself broke convention with an infinity-loop design which is a nod to The Gown Atelier's emblem and a symbol of unity, artistry, and everlasting love. And for many brides-to-be, it was a rare chance to view couture gowns – often only seen on international runways – up close, in a setting designed to inspire. A Launchpad For Malaysia's Modern Bridal Fashion Scene MBFW brought world-class designers from Malaysia and beyond to a proudly local stage, celebrating the evolving artistry of both Western and Asian bridal couture. The lineup included iconic names like Zuhair Murad, Vera Wang, Chung Thanh Phong alongside homegrown couture designers such as The Atelier. Most of these brands are carried exclusively by The Gown Atelier, a testament to the brand's position as a trusted curator of bridal fashion. Day 1 kicked off in style with a private opening ceremony attended by the media, designers, KOLs, local celebrities, and VIPs. Then, the runway lit up with a striking fusion of white wedding gowns and Oriental silhouettes by Zuhair Murad, Berta Chandra, and The Atelier, each one showcasing the elegance, craftsmanship, and cultural depth at the heart of MBFW. Adding to the glitz and excitement was a special appearance by international actress Arden Cho, best known as the voice of Rumi in K-pop Demon Hunters on Netflix, alongside Malaysian actress Yumi Wong of The Locksmith fame. The runway also welcomed familiar faces – Malaysian YouTuber Han Xiiao Aii turned heads in designs by The Atelier and Ivan Yong, while Hong Kong actress Hebe Chan gave a surprise appearance and brought her signature glamour to Alethea Sposa's Sangjit showcase on day 2. Days 2 and 3 welcomed the public, each with a themed showcase. 'Oriental Charm' on Day 2 brought Eastern elegance to the spotlight, with standout Sangjit-inspired looks, featuring modern takes on Indonesian qi pao and traditional cheongsam that resonated with brides seeking to honour heritage with contemporary flair. The runway was a vibrant display of culture and craftsmanship by brands like Berta Chandra, Alethea Sposa, Nicole Boenawan, Lichen, Tian Xi and more, cementing the rising influence of Asian bridal aesthetics. 'Ivory & Hues' on Day 3 closed MBFW with timeless sophistication. From minimal silhouettes to dramatic couture statements, the showcase featured looks from Ivan Yong, Wang Feng, Yaralis Kothor, Maison Pera, and more that captured the diversity and evolution of modern bridal wear. The evening wrapped up with a lively closing ceremony that brought guests, designers, and industry players together in celebration of MBFW's successful debut. Fashion Meets Experience Throughout MBFW, guests were invited to participate in immersive experiences – from DIY perfume and bouquet customisation to edible art cookie painting, express nail services, and gourmet offerings. The atmosphere was made even more lively by engaging emcees Kevin Chong and Diana Danielle. Danielle also delivered a soulful live performance that captivated the audience while an enchanting violin solo and a violin-and-saxophone duo added a refined touch to the weekend's celebratory mood. Cakra Khan wows KLCC, announces break
KUALA LUMPUR - The powerful and emotionally charged vocals of Indonesian star Cakra Khan captivated nearly 3,000 fans at his solo Divine Concert-Cakra Khan at the Plenary Hall, KLCC, here on Saturday. Known for his uniquely raspy voice, Cakra - whose real name is Cakra Konta Paryaman, 33, - performed 26 heartfelt songs during the nearly three-hour concert organised by Shiraz Projects. The concert opened at 8.45 pm with a medley of three popular songs: Setelah Kau Tiada, followed by Persinggahan and Mencari Cinta Sejati, before he greeted fans and admitted to being a little nervous about giving his best performance. "Assalamualaikum WBT. How is everyone doing? Praise be to Allah SWT for giving me the opportunity to be here tonight with all of you, who are absolutely amazing. I had nasi lemak earlier, so I can speak a bit of KL Malay now (laughs). Being on this stage is nerve-wracking - I'm afraid I might forget the lyrics - but I'm lucky to have all of you here tonight. Thank you, everyone,' he quipped. Backed by more than 10 musicians, including violin, cello, saxophone, keyboard, bass, guitar, trumpet, and drums, the performance continued with a string of hits from his second album such as Kau Memilih Dia, Salah Tapi Baik, Nanti, Tak Sejalan, Take The Pain, and Cahaya. "I had the honour of being a judge for the One in a Million talent show. I felt lucky to witness so many amazing talents there. I invited Trio XL to join me in performing Rindu Tak Bersuara - they have a solid classical foundation. I've studied classical music for a long time myself, but honestly, I haven't reached that level yet,' said Cakra, who is a fan of Luciano Pavarotti's work. One of the most touching moments came when Cakra dedicated the concert to his late father Hermana, his source of strength and inspiration since he entered the music industry in 2012. Hermana passed away due to a stroke in 2020. "In my village, during wedding celebrations, even outsiders can attend. So my dad would take me on his motorcycle to any wedding that had musical performances, just so I could sing. "Sadly, my late father didn't get the chance to attend my first concert here. Ross Butler enjoys local dishes while filming in M'sia: 'I'm a big durian guy'
Hollywood actor Ross Butler has a deep love for Malaysia. Born to a Malaysian-Chinese mother and an English-Dutch father, Butler, 35, never had the opportunity to truly explore his Malaysian roots. That is, until he landed a role in the upcoming romantic comedy Worth The Wait , which was partially filmed in Malaysia. Another fun fact – Lana is very scared of monkeys, and there was a very big one we had to keep scaring away.' Authentic Asian stories Directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Tom Lin Shu-yu, Worth The Wait centres on four Asian-American couples, whose journeys intertwine as they navigate life's challenges. There's Kai (Ross) and Leah (Condor), a couple trying to make a long-distance relationship work; Scott (Andrew Koji) and Amanda (Elodie Yung), who have an on-and-off relationship; Blake (Ricky He) and Riley (Ali Fumiko Whitney), young lovebirds whose romance meets disapproval from Blake's uncle Curtis (Sung Kang); as well as Nathan (Osric Chau) and Teresa (Karena Lam), a married couple grappling with the aftermath of a miscarriage. 'They fall in love, experience loss and happiness... Those roles could've been played by anyone regardless of their ethnicity,' Tan, 43, told StarLifestyle . One powerful storyline is that of Nathan and Teresa, whose struggle with grief adds emotional depth to this rom-com. It's inspired by Tan's sister, who experienced a miscarriage in real life. The film sees Canadian actor Osric Chau and Taiwanese-Canadian actress Karena Lam playing a married couple grappling with the aftermath of a miscarriage. 'It was only after I had my own child and had my own experience with miscarriage that I truly realised how soul-wrenching it is.' Though she and her sister initially felt alone in their grief, they later discovered that many other women in their community had endured the same pain. 'They all felt alone too, and that's why I wanted to show this part of our journey,' she said. From spouse to best friends On the topic of motherhood, Singaporean actress Tan Kheng Hua – who plays a mum in Worth The Wait – is no stranger to the role. Known for portraying maternal characters in shows like Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Kung Fu (2021-2023), Kheng Hua, 62, said it's a role she would gladly take on for 'the rest of my life'. 'Each time I play a mother, I get to dig deeper into a part of my heart and soul. 'All the mothers out there know being a mum is complex and difficult, yet beautiful and joyous,' she said. For the record, Kheng Hua shares a 23-year-old daughter with her ex-husband, fellow Singaporean actor Lim Yu Beng – who also appears in Worth The Wait as Kai's father. Though divorced, the pair – who were married from 1992 to 2017 – remain very close. 'At the time I took on the role, I didn't know who else was involved (in the movie), including my ex-wife, and we're best friends in real life,' said Lim, 59. The actor also spoke fondly about Penang, where his parents are from. 'My favourite Malaysian food is cooked at home, Penang laksa,' he said. Kheng Hua then chimed in: 'His mum cooks the best Penang laksa in the world. She uses two packs of fish, so next time you're in Singapore, give (Lim) a call!'
