Afghanistan responsible for K-P security situation
He made these remarks during his meeting with British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, at his office on Tuesday. They discussed the matters of mutual interest, particularly the role of British donor agencies in public welfare initiatives, regional security, and other relevant issues.
During the meeting with British HC, Gandapur stressed the need for serious and result-oriented efforts to find a sustainable solution to this longstanding issue, warning that if the security challenges in the merged districts are not addressed promptly, they could escalate and affect the entire country.
He further informed the British envoy that the provincial government had formed a Jirga to initiate dialogue with Afghan counterparts, and all necessary preparations for sending the delegation were complete.
However, since the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government, the KP administration is awaiting approval of the terms of reference (TORs) for the negotiations, said the K-P CM. He emphasized that lasting peace in the region was not just in Pakistan's interest but also in the interest of the entire region and the global community. He called on the world community to work collectively towards a permanent resolution through dialogue.
Touching upon the financial challenges faced by the province, the Chief Minister criticized the federal government for not releasing KP's due share under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, particularly for the newly merged districts. He stated that over Rs2000 billion in net hydel profit payments remain unpaid by the federal government.

S&P upgrades India rating, despite US tariff threats
MUMBAI: S&P upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating on Thursday, with the agency citing New Delhi's 'commitment to fiscal consolidation' and its 'buoyant economic growth'. The US ratings agency said it was upgrading the world's fifth-largest economy from BBB- to BBB, adding that it expects the impact of US President Donald Trump's tariff blitz on India to be 'manageable'. The outlook on the long-term rating, S&P noted, is 'stable'. 'The upgrade of India reflects its buoyant economic growth, against the backdrop of an enhanced monetary policy environment that anchors inflationary expectations,' S&P said in a statement. 'Together with the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation and efforts to improve spending quality, we believe these factors have coalesced to benefit credit metrics.' India reels from US tariff hike threat While India remains the world's fastest-growing major economy, there has recently been a slowdown in urban demand and muted government expenditure. The Indian economy expanded at its slowest pace in four years in the fiscal year that ended in March 2025. New Delhi's economic outlook has also been darkened in recent weeks by Trump's decision to punish its purchases of Russian oil by threatening to increase tariffs from 25 percent to 50 percent. But S&P believes that India's growth prospects won't be thrown off course as a result of Trump's chaotic trade policies, noting that even the 50 percent tariffs would not 'pose a material drag on growth'. India and China eye border trade resumption 'India is relatively less reliant on trade and about 60 percent of its economic growth stems from domestic consumption,' the agency's statement said. 'Factoring in sectoral exemptions on pharmaceuticals and consumer electronics, the exposure of Indian exports subjected to tariffs is lower at 1.2 percent of GDP,' it added. 'Though this may eventually result in a one-off hit to growth, we envisage the overall impact to be marginal and will not derail India's long-term growth prospects.' It added that even if India had to switch from importing Russian oil, the fiscal cost would be 'modest' given the 'narrow price differential between Russian crude and current international benchmarks'.

Australia shares rise as Westpac powers banking rally
Australian shares rose on Thursday, led by financials after Westpac reported a higher quarterly profit, while a rebound in domestic employment for July eased fears over cracks in the labour market. The S&P/ASX 200 index settled 0.5% higher at 8,873.8. It jumped as much as 0.8% earlier in the session, logging its fourth record high this week. Heavyweight financials, climbed 1.2%, bolstered by a more than 6% jump in Westpac. The company reported a rise in quarterly profit and a wider net interest margin was seen by analysts as a sign of resilience amid rate pressures, sending the stock to its highest level in a decade. Peers National Australia Bank and ANZ Group , which are yet to report quarterly results, rose 1.9% and 2%, respectively. Shares of top lender Commonwealth Bank of Australia were the only ones to fall among the 'big four' as concerns around its valuations lingered. CBA's stock fell on Wednesday despite reporting an in-line annual profit and record dividend, as investors balked at its lofty share price — among the priciest for banks globally. Expectations for Westpac were lower than CBA, making the former's results more impactful, said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst, KCM Trade. Meanwhile, Australia's job market showed strength in July, with employment bouncing back as firms added more full-time roles, while the jobless rate fell from a 3-1/2 year high, easing worries of a slowdown. Among other sectors, miners slipped 0.8% as iron ore futures were weighed down by signs of weak demand. BHP Group, the world's largest listed miner, fell 0.5%, while Rio Tinto and Fortescue slipped 3.7% and 1.7%, respectively. Discretionary and real estate stocks, rose 1% each. In individual stocks, Telstra, Australia's largest telco, slipped 2.6% to close at its lowest since July 11, after it forecast higher annual operating earnings, but fell short of market expectations. New Zealand's S&P/NZX 50 index ended 0.5% higher at 12,834.08.

Pakistan to create new force in military to supervise missiles
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will create a new force in the military to supervise missile combat capabilities in a conventional conflict. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the creation of the Army Rocket Force late Wednesday at a ceremony held in Islamabad to commemorate the worst conflict in decades with India in May. The ceremony was held a day ahead of Pakistan's 78th Independence Day. 'It will be equipped with modern technology,' Sharif said in a statement from his office, adding that the force will prove to be a milestone in strengthening the combat capability of Pakistan's army. He did not give any further details. A senior security official, however, said that the force will have its own command in the military which will be dedicated to handling and deployment of missiles in any event of a conventional war. PM Shehbaz Sharif attends flag hoisting ceremony at Pakistan Monument in Islamabad 'It is obvious that it is meant for India,' he said. The two nuclear-armed nations keep upgrading their military capabilities in the wake of a longstanding rivalry since their independence from British rule in 1947. The latest tension between the two countries soared in April over the killing of 26 civilians in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), an attack New Delhi blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan denied involvement. A conflict then erupted in May, the most serious fighting between the two countries in decades, which saw both sides using missiles, drones and fighter jets before it ended with a cease-fire announcement by US President Donald Trump. Islamabad acknowledges the US role, but India denies it, saying it was agreed directly between the two militaries.
