Centre should abandon security-centric approach, engage in dialogue to resolve J&K issues: Mehbooba Mufti
'The recent (India-Pakistan) war (after the Pahalgam attack) achieved nothing but destruction on this side and an unwanted arms race in the region. I don't know what happened on that side. PDP founder Mufti Muhammad Sayeed always talked about friendship, peace and opposed war. India has to play the role of big brother in the region,' Ms. Mufti said while addressing the party workers at the Sher-i-Kashmir Park.
She urged the Centre 'to abandon its security-centric approach in J&K and embrace meaningful reconciliation and dialogue to address the region's long-standing issues'.
Ms. Mufti said the leadership of J&K has a 'role in advising India to enter into a dialogue and avoid war'.
'The war is always played out in J&K. What is India's foreign policy without J&K at its heart? Decades of conflict have brought only suffering, wars end, only to be replaced by new ones. Pakistan has invested in war machinery, and India, once revered as the 'hathi' for its strength and wisdom, has shackled Jammu and Kashmir with a heavy-handed approach,' Ms. Mufti said.
Lack of basic facilities
Highlighting the socio-economic neglect the region was facing, Ms. Mufti said, 'Our country grapples with poverty, many schools lack basic facilities like toilets and clean drinking water, yet we prioritise buying weapons and deploying more CRPF companies to J&K. How much security is enough? Militarisation cannot heal wounds. Until the Centre embraces the people of Jammu and Kashmir with empathy and addresses their genuine aspirations, no progress will be made,' Ms. Mufti.
Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the mandate and power to resolve the Kashmir issue, Ms. Mufti said, 'PM ModiJi has the power to rewrite the story of J&K. If India is to surpass nations like China, it must end this war-like system and take concrete steps toward reconciliation. Restore the trust of the people by engaging in a process that respects their dignity and rights.'
She also underlined that the revocation of Article 370 in 2019 has 'only deepened alienation'. 'The people of J&K are not enemies; they are citizens seeking justice and inclusion. The Centre must stop treating this region as a security problem and start addressing it as a political issue requiring dialogue and statesmanship,' she added.
She said her party stand is 'commitment to dialogue, a vision set by its founder, late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed'.
'Our goal is a peaceful, prosperous J&K, integrated with India through mutual respect, not coercion. Peace with dignity and not peace through war is needed,' she said.
The PDP also urged the Centre to initiate a credible process, restore democratic institutions in its true sense, and prioritise the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to build a future of peace and progress.

Palaniswami hits out at DMK for running ‘advertisement-model government' in Tamil Nadu
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said on Saturday that the DMK has been running an 'advertisement-model' government, which gave new names to old schemes every day. As part of his Makkalai Kappom Tamizhagathai Meetpom campaign, the Leader of the Opposition addressed a public meeting in Tiruchendur. He said the AIADMK government's schemes were being rebranded with new names, including the Amma Arogya Thittam introduced in 2016, which had now been rebranded as Nalam Kaakkum Stalin. Referring to the DMK's Ungaludan Stalin grievance redress camps, he said: 'For the past 50 months, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has never thought about the people. Now, he is conducting camps where people can submit petitions for 46 types of grievances. If these could not be resolved in four years, how will they be resolved in eight months?' Mr. Palaniswami emphasised that the 2026 Assembly election would be crucial in putting an end to dynastic rule and family politics. 'The DMK made 525 announcements during its election campaign. However, till today, they have not been fully implemented. Whenever the Chief Minister is questioned on this matter, he lies and claims that 98% of the promises announced by the DMK have been fulfilled,' he added. 'They also promised to extend the 100-day employment scheme to 150 days. But has it increased?' he asked, and added that not only was the extension never implemented but the wage disbursement was also delayed. In reality, it was the AIADMK that negotiated with the Centre to get ₹2,999 crore in the first phase for wage disbursement, he claimed. Stating that Tiruchendur, a sacred, spiritual land known across the world, has many farmers, fishermen and palmyra climbers, he highlighted the various welfare schemes launched for them during the AIADMK regime and assured them that once the party returned to power, banana farmers would be compensated for crop damage caused due to strong winds. In addition, he said fishing ban period assistance would be increased and relief funds would be provided to salt pan workers during the monsoon. He added that a separate welfare board would be established for salt pan workers. He alleged that the price of essential commodities and construction materials had skyrocketed under the DMK government. Stakeholder interaction As part of the campaign, Mr. Palaniswami held a meeting with industrialists, farmers, and salt manufacturers in Thoothukudi on Saturday. The meeting saw the participation of the lorry owners' association, country boat fishermen's union, small traders' association, Cruz Fernandez People Forum, and SPIC Workers' Welfare Union, among others. He said after the AIADMK formed the government in Tamil Nadu, drug trafficking would be eradicated and sale of narcotics would be curbed. During the meeting, representatives put forth demands such as the establishment of a commercial hub in Thoothukudi, a skill training centre for workers, development of industrial parks, designated parking facilities for lorries, increase of relief during fishing ban period, improving the functioning of the fishermen cooperative society, construction of flyover at the VVD junction, and desilting of 53 irrigation tanks connected to the Tamirabharani. Responding to them, Mr. Palaniswami said that during the AIADMK regime, about 750 acres of land had been acquired and funds had been allocated for a new airport terminal in Thoothukudi. After the DMK came to power, some additional land was acquired, but the groundwork had already been laid by the AIADMK government. Noting the growth of the palm industry, he said his government would extend all possible support to those involved if voted to power and assured them that his government would desilt irrigation tanks under the Kudimarathu Scheme.

Nagpur: Vijay Chauthaiwale, in-charge of BJP's foreign affairs department, described the 2009 Indo-Pak bilateral meeting in Egypt as the lowest point in India's foreign policy. Speaking at an event organized by the Late Prakash Rajurkar Memorial Trust in Nagpur, Chauthaiwale said the joint statement issued after the meeting between then PM Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani undermined India's anti-terrorism stance. Iranian President Pezeshkian in Pakistan to strengthen bilateral ties
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Saturday (August 2, 2025) on a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening ties and increasing bilateral trade volume to $10 billion annually. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and other high-ranking government officials warmly received the Iranian President at Noor Khan Air Base. A 21-gun salute was also presented to the visiting dignitary. During his brief stay in Lahore, he had a meeting with Nawaz Sharif. President Pezeshkian also visited the mausoleum of poet Allama Iqbal, who is still popular in Iran due to his Persian poetry. This marks Mr. Pezeshkian's first official visit to Pakistan as President of Iran. 'The visit is expected to further strengthen the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran,' the FO added. Prime Minister Sharif had visited Iran on May 26.
