Govt eyeing regional rice sources amid India-Pakistan tensions
PARIT BUNTAR: The government has not ruled out the possibility of increasing rice imports from other countries in the region following the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (pic) said the issue is expected to affect Malaysia's imported rice supply.
"Yes (supply could be affected), because these two countries (account for) about 38% (of our imported rice). I hope and am confident that both sides do not want war.
"However, we will work with countries such as Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia to ensure sufficient rice supply in the country,' he told a press conference after the opening of the Perak Farmers Organisation's Certified Padi Seed Production Centre here on Tuesday (May 6).
Earlier, Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah graced and officiated the ceremony.
Tensions between India and Pakistan spiked following a terror attack in Kashmir on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
In another development, Mohamad was confident that there would be no panic buying of chicken eggs, citing sufficient supply through ongoing government initiatives such as the Rahmah Sales and Agro Sales programmes.
On predictions that egg prices may rise by up to 3 sen per egg following the full removal of government subsidies on Aug 1, he called it speculation.
"It's just a projection. We've seen similar concerns before, such as when chicken prices were floated, but they remained stable.
"With global feed costs like soy and grain corn on a downward trend, we hope egg prices will also remain steady,' he said.
The Federation of Livestock Farmers' Associations of Malaysia was quoted in a news report Tuesday as saying that egg prices could increase if production costs remain at the current rate of 38 sen per egg after the subsidy removal. – Bernama

'If we reflect with open hearts, we will see that haj is a commanding symbol of unity for Muslims worldwide. Look at the millions of people from different races, skin colours, cultures and languages gathering in one place, facing one qiblah, calling out one name: Allah SWT. 'There are no titles, no castes, no worldly pride. All that remains are two pieces of white cloth and hearts humbled before the Creator. Sook's Tamu Monggorimot gains attention

Tamu Monggorimot was established in 1992 as a sales platform for farmers, small entrepreneurs and local residents. Advertisement Since then, it has undergone several phases of upgrading including the latest allocation of RM500,000 channeled by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) in 2024 as a result of a proposal by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. When officiating the tamu in Kampung Monggorimot on Saturday, Arthur said the establishment of this tamu aims to increase the income of rural residents, provide a direct marketing platform without dependence on middlemen, and foster the spirit of entrepreneurship among the local community. Apart from that, he said, this tamu market also plays an important role in preserving the cultural heritage of the local community, besides contributing to the country's food security policy through the supply of fresh and local agricultural produce. 'This effort aims to upgrade the facilities and management of the tamu market to be more systematic and competitive, thus making Tamu Monggorimot a competitive local economic center,' he said. Arthur told that Tamu Monggorimot operates every Saturday from 6.00 am to 12.00 noon with the participation of around 60 traders who sell various products including food, beverages, agricultural products, river and sea fish, chicken and meat. Since 2017, he said, Fama has upgraded eight tourist markets in Sabah including Keningau, Kudat, Kunak, Beluran, Tuaran, Telupid, Kinabatangan and Sook – making Tamu Monggorimot one of the latest achievements in this effort. He said, this program is part of FAMA's ongoing initiative to strengthen the agricultural marketing network at the grassroots level and empower the rural economy in Sabah. 'Fama is committed to continuing to support rural economic development and strengthen agricultural marketing networks nationwide,' he said. At the program, Arthur also held a business equipment handover session to local entrepreneurs and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Fama and the Monggorimot Residents' Committee as well as visits to entrepreneur stalls. Anwar receives Aidiladha greetings from Iranian president, reaffirms support for Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR: In the spirit of Aidiladha, which upholds the values of sacrifice and justice, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the steadfastness of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in defending the plight of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. In a phone call with Masoud on Thursday, Anwar said Malaysia stands firmly with Iran in strongly rejecting all forms of occupation and the ongoing expulsion of Gaza's people, who continue to be oppressed by the Zionist Israeli regime. "I also conveyed that Malaysia's foreign policy is not dictated by external powers but is built on national interests and firm convictions. "Malaysia condemns the hypocrisy of certain countries that claim to uphold human rights yet silently allow mass killings without any dignified action. Silence in the face of oppression is a betrayal of universal human values," he said in a statement on Facebook. Anwar said Masoud also extended Aidiladha greetings for the celebration on Saturday. Anwar prayed that haj pilgrims from both nations currently in the holy city of Makkah would be granted a blessed haj and contribute to the development of the 'Ummah' upon returning to their respective countries. The prime minister also expressed gratitude to Masoud for his noble efforts in facilitating the repatriation of two Malaysian citizens previously detained in Iran.
