Cops probe woman, 70, for driving on motorbike lane at Penang second bridge

PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a 70-year-old woman for allegedly driving on the motorcycle lane of the Penang second bridge.
Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Jay January Siowou said a video of the incident, showing a Proton X50 using the motorcycle lane of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge, had made its rounds on social media.
He said a preliminary investigation found that the footage was captured at Km8.6 of the bridge, heading towards the island, at about 1.30pm on June 20.
'Police managed to track down the driver and had taken her to a police station for further investigation,' Jay said in a statement yesterday.
The case is being investigated for the offence of using an unauthorised lane.

NIBONG TEBAL, Aug 18 — Police have arrested a tipper lorry driver for obstructing a civil servant from carrying out his duties and driving recklessly, almost hitting a policeman on duty in an incident at Jalan Sungai Daun, here two days ago. Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said a police team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the SPS District Police Headquarters was conducting Op Bersepadu and Op Samseng Jalanan in the Jawi Toll Plaza area, here at 11.30 pm, when they spotted two tipper lorries in a suspicious condition. 'When ordered to stop, the two vehicles refused to cooperate before continuing to speed towards Jalan Besar Nibong Tebal. 'One of the lorries ran a red light at Bukit Panchor and almost hit a police officer on duty. The driver even drove dangerously towards Jalan Transkrian before being arrested with the help of a patrol car (MPV) and the police Motorcycle Patrol Unit at Jalan Sungai Duan, Kampung Ladang Kalidonia,' he said in a statement last night. He said initial investigations found that the lorry driver, a local man, did not possess a valid driving licence and a Goods Vehicle Licence (GDL), while the lorry's road tax had expired. Jay said the tipper lorry was sealed and the case was being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant from performing duties and Section 279 of the same law and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act for dangerous and reckless driving. — Bernama

KUCHING, Aug 17 — The negligence in the initial investigation over Zara Qairina Mahathir's case in Sabah has been addressed, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has assured. According to him, the process after this is further investigation on whether or not any individuals will be charged. 'As Malaysians, let's just leave the matter to the police, and legal action will be taken accordingly. 'Let's not resort to creating negative sentiments that can destroy the peace of our country,' he said when met by reporters after attending a function at Jalan Sultan Tengah here yesterday. Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near here school hostel at around 4am. Adding on, Fadillah expressed hope that everyone would continue to show respect for the nation's judiciary system, policing system and the integrity of the health system. 'This is not the time for people to politicise this issue — an act that may jeopardise the prevailing harmony. 'Allow time for the authorities to investigate transparently until a decision is made. 'If there is indeed an injustice involved, we will see to it that a fairer and more transparent action be taken. 'Right now, let this matter take its course since investigations are underway,' he said. The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), on August 8, announced that the girl's body would be exhumed to allow post-mortem to be conducted, stating that further investigations by the police were necessary to ensure that all aspects of the case would be thoroughly examined. — The Borneo Post
