Ian Wright has addressed recent claims by Eni Aluko, in which she accused him of blocking opportunities for women in football and declared his inability to accept her apology. Aluko alleged the former Arsenal star's "dominating" presence in women's football coverage was detrimental to aspiring female pundits.
Wright responded publicly, sharing his frustration with Aluko's assertions during an appearance on Radio Four's Women's Hour. ITV's choice to feature Wright as a commentator, she suggested, limited chances for women to break into the field, while also citing that her career suffered due to Joey Barton, whom she is suing for libel.

Aluko later expressed regret over her remarks about Wright. However, the retired Arsenal player voiced his disillusionment, explaining he had no wish to perpetuate the controversy but felt compelled to address it. "I have to talk about this week and what's going on, I don't want to endlessly be asked about it," Wright expressed.

He recounted his support for Aluko, including public backing and personal consultations: "I've got to say, I'm very disappointed about what Eni has said, she knows how I've helped her, supported her publicly, and I know the previous conversations she's had with me and my management."

Despite having sighted Aluko's apology on social media, Wright found it unacceptable but indicated his desire to move past the incident: "I've seen the apology on social media, but I can't accept it. But I also want to move on. For anyone watching this, I really don't need any further social commentary directed on any of this," reports the Mirror.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of collective focus on women's football rather than individual attention: "The thing about where the women's game is, it isn't about me - it has to be about the collective.
"Because of the past, we know the men blocked the women's game for 50 years, because of the past we know the game has serious systemic challenges, and it's going to take everyone to help fixes. So for me, I always give back to the game, it's given me so much."

Aluko has confessed that she was mistaken in mentioning Wright's name while discussing broader issues concerning opportunities for women. In an Instagram post, she stated: "Ian Wright is a brilliant broadcaster and role model whose support for the women's game has been significant.
"In my interview with Woman's Hour this week, I was trying to make a broader point about the limited opportunities for women in football - whether that's in coaching, broadcasting or commercial spaces - and the importance of creating more space for women to thrive on and off the pitch.
"But it was wrong for Ian's name to be raised in that conversation, and for that I sincerely apologise. I've known and worked with Ian for many years and have nothing but love and respect for him."

Man Utd dressing room reaction speaks volumes after Alan Shearer comment on Arsenal loss

The verdict from within the Manchester United dressing room has emerged following an encouraging display in the opening-weekend defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford The Manchester United squad is in broad agreement with Alan Shearer following the positive opening weekend display against Arsenal. One of the best displays in recent memory from United went unrewarded as an Altay Bayindir error allowed Riccardo Calafiori to head the Gunners in front early on, with United unable to convert any of their 22 attempts at goal in 1-0 loss. ‌ Although they suffered defeat, many United fans left Old Trafford feeling upbeat about the impact of new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in a revitalised attack that kept Mikel Arteta 's side pegged back for long stretches. Following the game, the feeling within the squad was one of encouragement. ‌ Per the Manchester Evening News, dressing room sources say the players believe they made clear strides with their performance against last season's runners-up and Champions League semi-finalists. Another source said the squad felt the display was "much better" than how United fared in the majority of Old Trafford matches last season. ‌ That feeling was shared by Premier League legend Shearer, who hasn't been afraid to stick the boot in on both United and Ruben Amorim in recent times. But speaking on the Rest is Football with Gary Lineker and Miach Richards, the Newcastle icon said: 'I think for me the two standouts [were Cunha and Mbeumo]. 'Cunha was very good and Mbeumo was excellent. They brought a bit of unpredictability, they brought a bit of a spark and a bit of life to Manchester United. 'I do think that there was definitely more energy to the game, they certainly looked more organised, but you would feel more comfortable if they had a goalkeeper in there who you could rely on.' Amorim also brought up United's improved intensity levels as he hailed the performance, saying: 'It's more about the intensity our players play at, if they are brave, if they are talented, if they are powerful. We show a little bit more than that. 'We have a lot to do and have to focus on the next one. I think also, they understand better the way we have to do it. ‌ 'They are prepared to do it physically and they want to help each other. That is a very good feeling. Sometimes, you can see one guy missing one run or one pass and you feel the team is all together.' However, Shearer cautioned that United must sign a new keeper if they are to make genuine strides this season, with question marks over error-prone pair Bayindir and Andre Onana. United have been linked with PSG stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma. ‌ Shearer said: 'I think if they don't get that, then that could be their downfall. It remains to be seen if anything happens in the next couple of weeks. But in terms of general play, I thought it was a lot better from Manchester United." The Red Devils visit Fulham on Sunday looking for their first points of the season.

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Rodrygo BOOST, Eze updates, multiple Prem clubs chase Gunners winger

Eze battle nears its conclusion Arsenal are set to lose out on priority target Eberechi Eze, if reports from Fabrizio Romano are to be believed. North London rivals are offering up to a £60million package including add-ons for the England international. The 27-year-old has been hugely influential in attack for Crystal Palace since arriving in 2020. He appeared to have opened the scoring with a free-kick in the Eagles' season opener against Chelsea, before it was ruled out due to Marc Guehi's proximity to the wall.
