SHAH ALAM - Malaysians can expect financial relief and cost-of-living support in 2025 following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sweeping announcement earlier today.
Among the key measures: a one-off RM100 cash aid for adults, the doubling of Rahmah sales allocation, postponed toll hikes, targeted RON95 petrol subsidies, lower electricity bills and increased minimum wages.

Here are the key takeaway from Anwar's announcement:
Financial Assistance: A one-off RM100 payment through MyKad for every adult citizen aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) program, starting Aug 31, 2025. This can be spent on basic necessities at over 4,100 stores until Dec 31, 2025. This assistance is per individual, meaning a household with multiple adults can receive more (e.g: RM400 for a couple with two adult children).
Increased overall allocation for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and SARA to RM15 billion for 2025, the highest in history.
Increased cash assistance under the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) to RM2.9 billion, which includes higher monthly welfare aid for the elderly and children from poor families.
Cost of Living Relief: Minimum Wage Increase: The minimum wage increased to RM1,700 from RM1,500, effective Feb 1, 2025 and fully enforced by Aug 1, 2025.
Living Wage for GLIC/GLC Employees: Companies linked to the government (GLIC and GLC) ensure 153,000 workers receive a living wage of at least RM3,100 per month.
Paddy Farmers' Support: The purchase floor price for paddy increased to RM1,500 (2025) and the Paddy Price Subsidy Scheme increased to RM500 (2023).
Rubber Smallholders' Support: The Rubber Production Incentive (IPG) increased to RM3.00 (2024).
Expanded Rahmah Madani Sales: The allocation for "Jualan Rahmah Madani 2025" has doubled to RM600 million, allowing for more frequent sales, wider coverage (all 600 state constituencies) and a greater variety of goods for citizens.
Toll Rate Freeze: The government will bear over RM500 million to postpone scheduled toll rate increases for 10 highways this year, allowing citizens to continue paying the same toll rates.
Reduced RON95 Petrol Price: Once the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy is implemented, Malaysian citizens will enjoy a lower price of RM1.99 per liter, benefiting approximately 18 million car drivers and motorcyclists. Foreigners will pay the market price.
Lower Electricity Bills: 85 per cent of domestic electricity consumers experienced a decrease in their electricity bills for July 2025 usage compared to the first half of 2025, with reductions of up to 14 per cent.
Employment and Healthcare: Unemployment has decreased to 3.0 per cent (May 2025), the lowest in over a decade.
Over 250,000 new jobs were created in 2023 and 2024.
The Health Ministry will expedite efforts to fill over 4,352 contract doctor positions in health facilities nationwide by the end of 2025, aiming to provide better healthcare services.
Poverty Eradication: Nearly 150,000 hardcore poor households from 2023 have moved out of the hardcore poor category by the end of 2024.
The "Sejahtera Madani" initiative will be launched to continue assisting hardcore poor and poor groups through government and corporate sector collaboration.
Community Development and Education: "Sejati Madani" has channelled up to RM100,000 to communities for income-generating economic activities, leading to over 8,600 community economic activities in villages.
The "Kampung Angkat Madani" (Adopted Village Madani) programme has expanded from 40 to 200 villages this year, benefiting community-level citizens.
The "Sekolah Angkat Madani" (Adopted School Madani) initiative aims to have 1,000 adopted schools by the end of the year, ensuring the best education for children.
Public Holiday: Sept 15, 2025 (Monday), has been declared an additional public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations, to foster unity and encourage family time and domestic tourism.

Don't let foreigners misuse business licences, warns Nga

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not allow their citizenship to be misused by foreigners to obtain business licences, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said from January 2023 to July this year, 3,703 enforcement operations were carried out against business premises involving foreign workers. "Malaysian citizens must uphold the Rukun Negara and safeguard the nation's identity from being exploited," he said in reply to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences terminated, and 2,880 premises seized due to licence violations. He explained that government policies were for the benefit of Malaysians and not foreigners, while clarifying that the ministry had never issued such licences to foreigners. "The local authorities and the government have never allowed foreigners to apply and obtain licences for hawker stalls, small businesses, business premises, retail shops, restaurants, car workshops and markets," he said. He added that foreigners were also not allowed to work at premises owned by the local authorities, as citizens were meant to earn an income through the local authorities' premises. "The local authorities will not compromise with any violation of the terms of the licence issued. Strict action such as seizures, compounds, shutting down of premises and termination of licences will be taken," he said.

'The case has been referred to the Classified Crime Investigation Unit in Bukit Aman,' he said during a press conference. The remaining reports concerning drone operations have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). Turun Anwar rally missed the point, says ex-Muda sec-gen

About 18,000 people took part in Saturday's 'Turun Anwar' rally in Kuala Lumpur, according to police, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed a total of more than 200,000 participants. PETALING JAYA : The opposition should have focused on credible alternatives and policy proposals in its July 26 rally instead of focusing on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's failures and demanding his resignation, says a former Muda secretary-general. Amir Hadi, now the executive director of civil society group Mandiri, said he had communicated his reservations to the organisers regarding the use of the Turun Anwar slogan. Amir Hadi. '#TurunAnwar is political. It's a message aimed at seizing power. Especially when Perikatan Nasional (PN) is known for its many manoeuvres to return to government, including efforts to topple a government without going through an election. 'This kind of approach turns people off. At least those on the fence. If you're a party member or sympathiser, of course, you'd want the government to fall. But for fence-sitters, it just looks like a rushed attempt to return to power,' he said in a Facebook post late last night. He said Malaysians might be frustrated with the current government, but were also weary of political instability that could do more harm. 'The fact is, people are sick of politicians. They may be angry at Anwar over various issues, but that doesn't mean they want him removed halfway through his term, plunging the country back into instability,' he said. Amir, who did not join the rally for the reasons given, said presenting concrete policy alternatives such as abolishing toll charges and repealing draconian laws was the strength of past oppositions. 'Even if they've failed to deliver now, back when they were the opposition, they presented solutions,' he said in a likely reference to Pakatan Harapan, which is now part of the unity government. Amir also said that questions about who PN would propose as Anwar's potential replacement were legitimate: 'And they still can't answer who will replace Anwar – even within their own ranks. So how can people trust them?' 'PN lacks direction' DAP's Liew Chin Tong also took aim at the opposition, saying PN had a significant presence in Parliament but lacked a clear leadership vision to be taken as a serious alternative. Liew Chin Tong. He said the Turun Anwar rally might have drawn a crowd, but did not capture the interest of middle-ground or non-partisan voters. 'Almost all were core supporters of PAS,' the deputy investment, trade and industry minister said in a Facebook post. He said PN could choose to be a constructive opposition, such as by cooperating on key issues like confidence and supply, as DAP did after the Sheraton Move. 'Their leaders should know that being the kind of opposition that can only manufacture outrage and anger to manipulate the people's emotions, especially among the Malays, will not bring the country anywhere,' he said.
