28 held in Vadakadu communal clash; plaint filed against VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan
PUDUKKOTTAI: The number of arrests made in connection with the communal clash in Vadakadu rose to 28 with the arrest of two more persons on Saturday. According to police, 20 caste Hindus and 6 Dalits had earlier been arrested in this connection. On Saturday, one person from each group was arrested, taking the total to 28.
Violence broke out on May 5 when a dispute between Dalits and caste Hindus over rights at a temple festival escalated into an attack in a Dalit residential area, leaving several people injured on both sides. Following the incident, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan alleged that Dalits, traditionally allowed to pull the car of the Muthumariamman temple, were denied that right on May 5.
Countering his statement, the 'Servaikaranpatti servai', a caste Hindu organisation, claimed a 300-year-old right over the ritual. The organisation filed a complaint in Vadakadu police station accusing Thirumavalavan of spreading false and provocative remarks.
Responding to this on Sunday Thirumavalavan said his comments were based on inputs from affected people, and would stand corrected if proven wrong.

Speaking to IANS, Khan Sir said, 'This is not just a case of crime, this is a question of our collective humanity." Describing the inhumanity of the incident, he said, 'Arif Mohammad Khan (Bihar Governor), who came to meet me, was very shaken. He told us, 'How can a human being be so devoid of empathy that a child – a 11-year-old girl – comes out limping after being raped, and even then, the system fails to respond?' She was taken away in an ambulance, and even then, she was shuttled between hospitals without proper treatment.' 'Where are we going as a society? The pain of another should feel like our own – this is the essence of humanity. If we lose this, then what is the difference between humans and animals?" he told IANS. Khan Sir further called on the legal fraternity to introspect. 'Why do some lawyers take up the cases of such criminals—rapists, acid attackers, and murderers? I know many responsible lawyers who refuse to fight for someone they know is guilty. It's time more people follow this principle. The unity and conscience of the legal community can make a real difference.' He also wished the nation on Bakra Eid, expressing his deep respect for Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, who visited his classroom on the occasion. 'It's our good fortune that someone as intellectual and compassionate as Arif Mohammad Khan is serving as our Governor,' he said. Sharing an anecdote from the visit, Khan Sir recalled how the Governor insisted on visiting the classroom and was moved by the inclusive atmosphere. 'We have reserved front-row benches for a person with disability. They study free of cost, and we make sure they get the best experience. When the Governor saw this, he was impressed and even expressed interest in taking a class here someday.' Calling it a proud moment, Khan Sir added, 'He said, 'Tell me a topic and I will come to teach your students.' It's a great honour, and we are looking forward to that day.' When asked about his personal life, as he was recently married, he said, 'Everything is normal, just like any other couple.' Khan Sir further responded to the Bihar government's action of suspending the Medical Superintendent of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur, where the girl was allegedly denied timely treatment. 'The suspension is a start, but it's not enough. There should be a clear protocol for critical cases. If someone is shot or raped, you don't delay treatment for paperwork. She died in the ambulance, waiting for admission. This is not just negligence – it's criminal apathy.' He proposed systemic reforms in hospital operations. 'In big hospitals, there is always a separate corridor for emergencies. Why don't we have one in Bihar's biggest government hospital? There should be a direct route for super-critical cases. A building alone doesn't make a hospital – it's the system and intent inside that matter.' 'In smaller towns or villages, you can understand some lack of infrastructure. But in Muzaffarpur? This is unacceptable. It brings shame to the entire district, the entire state.' Khan Sir concluded with a plea: 'We need to look within. These brutal crimes are becoming frequent. The time for silence is over. We have to stand up – as citizens, as educators, as humans. Because if we don't, we fail not just the victim, but the idea of humanity itself.'

Assam: Two more arrested in crackdown on ‘anti-nationals', says CM Himanta Sarma
Two more persons were arrested in Assam in a crackdown on alleged 'anti-national and communal elements', Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. With this, the number of arrests in such cases in the state since the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam increased to 90. While Goalpara Police arrested Sanidul Islam for allegedly 'offensive social media posts on Lord Ram', Kamrup Police apprehended Saniur Rahman for 'inciting communal discord' through social media, Sarma said on social media. The attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Since the attack, the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam has been arresting persons accused of alleged 'anti-national' activities. On June 1, the chief minister said that 81 'anti-nationals' were put 'behind bars for sympathising with Pakistan'. On April 24, Sarma had said that the state would take action against anyone directly or indirectly defending the 'horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam'. This came after Opposition All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for claiming that the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack may have been the results of conspiracies by BJP leaders. Islam got bail in the sedition case on May 14, but was detained again under the National Security Act on the same day, PTI reported. The Act allows for long periods of detention without trial and suspends important rights of the accused person, including the right to legal representation and immediate information about the cause of the arrest.

‘Shows apathy': Allahabad HC raps UP government for delay in disbursing Kumbh stampede compensation
The Allahabad High Court on Friday said that the delay in disbursing compensation to the families of those who died during a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage site in Prayagraj showed the Uttar Pradesh government's 'apathy to the plight of the citizens', Live Law reported. A bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Sandeep Jain also directed the state government to furnish details of the deaths and medical handling of those who died or were injured between January 28 and the end of the pilgrimage. The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state was also told to submit details of the number of compensation claims it had received and settled, and those that are pending. The stampede had broken out at the Maha Kumbh on January 29 as a large number of pilgrims arrived to take a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar. The state government has said that at least 30 persons were killed and 60 others were injured, although several media reports have suggested that the actual toll could be significantly higher. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath had announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for those who died in the stampede. The court was hearing a plea filed by the husband of one of the persons who died. It expressed concern that the woman's body had been handed over to her family without a postmortem being conducted. The judges took note of the serious injuries reported on the woman, including a crushed rib cage, and questioned the lack of official documentation or communication with the family regarding the cause and circumstances of the death, Live Law reported. The bench directed that medical institutions and authorities in Prayagraj be made parties to the petitions and directed them to file affidavits disclosing details of all patients and dead bodies that may have been brought to the facilities and those dispatched by them between the incident and the end of the Mela. The bench was alarmed that the woman's body was handed over to the family in February but compensation was yet to be provided, according to Live Law.
