Panelbeater accidentally destroys five customers' cars
The incident happened on Tuesday at Waterloo in KwaZulu-Natal after the Malawian owner started the fire.
Prem Balram, a spokesperson for private security company Reaction Unit SA, said unit members 'arrived on the scene at about 1.30pm and removed gas cylinders lying near the burning vehicles.
'The flames spread through the yard, which resulted in five customers' vehicles catching alight. Firefighters from the eThekwini fire department extinguished the blaze.'
No injuries were reported.

RUSA Spokesperson Prem Balram said that they informed the family about the next steps they need to take to get help for the woman. A suspect was arrested in Verulam, KZN on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, after attacking a family with a knife. The 36-year-old male suspect entered a property on Aslaam Road in Riyadh with intentions to rob the residence. Two family members were having tea in their yard when they suddenly noticed the suspect approaching them. 'The 78-year-old woman and her male domestic worker fled into the house, followed by the suspect. The robber produced a knife and attempted to steal the metal payer statue, but was confronted by a 54-year-old male who exited the bedroom. He stabbed the victim on his hand and fled empty-handed,' said RUSA. The suspect was later caught on Russom Street. A woman has been saved from a suicide attempt after a loan shark demanded interest of R100,000 on a R20,000 loan. The woman from Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, had recently attempted to kill herself twice before she was saved by Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) from jumping off a bridge on Monday. 'Rusa received several calls from friends and family of the victim. According to the family, the loan shark had lent her the cash and changed the interest rates from 50% to 400% when the debt was almost settled. The lender then threatened to send a group of men to repossess her car if the money was not paid,' said Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram. He said the woman then borrowed smaller amounts and paid them over to the loan shark, but he made further demands. 'The mother of a minor daughter made calls to family earlier this week, informing them she intended to jump off a bridge, explaining that she had become overwhelmed in debt. She requested that family care for her child.' Rusa said in recent weeks several people have been intimidated, assaulted and had their valuables forcefully taken from them after they failed to pay back exorbitant interest on borrowed money.

3 arrested in Tongaat while refuelling hijacked school taxi with driver inside A dramatic police and private security operation led to the arrest of three men and the recovery of a hijacked school taxi in Upper Tongaat, KZN, this morning. According to The North Coast Courier, the incident began in Blackburn, where a 43-year-old driver on his way to collect schoolchildren had his path blocked by two men on a dirt road. A third man allegedly emerged from nearby sugarcane fields wielding a dagger and forced the driver into the back of the car. The men allegedly assaulted him and tied him up before fleeing in the hijacked VW Crafter. Fortunately, no children had been picked up at the time of the hijacking. At 08:24, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public and immediately dispatched all available officers. The taxi, fitted with a tracking device, was traced moving through Hambanathi and later spotted heading towards Esenembe on the R614. Rusa officers, joined by Verulam SAPS and multiple private security companies, intercepted the taxi at a petrol station in Upper Tongaat, where the men had stopped to refuel. The suspects were arrested just over 20 minutes after the hijacking took place. Authorities praised the swift co-ordination between law enforcement and private security teams, which ensured the safe recovery of the vehicle and the driver. Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram warned that hijackings are on the rise and that criminals are changing their behaviour. 'We have noticed an increase in victims being taken with the vehicles,' said Balram. 'This is because it delays the victims from calling law enforcement or the tracking companies. They take the victims along before leaving them in an isolated area. By the time law enforcement finds the victims, the suspects are long gone.' Balram added that there has also been an increase in hijackings during poor weather or low-visibility conditions. 'Rain and fog hamper the search helicopters, making it harder to locate the vehicles from above,' he said. Investigations are ongoing.
