Malaysia to host AIPACODD 2025 meeting in Kuantan
The theme 'Uniting Parliament for an Inclusive and Sustainable ASEAN in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges' aligns with this year's Malaysian ASEAN chairmanship theme, which emphasises inclusivity and sustainability.
According to a statement from the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat) today, the meeting will be officiated by the AIPA president and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, while Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor will be appointed as the chairperson of the 8th AIPACODD Meeting.
'Among the main agenda of the meeting are a panel session featuring representatives from the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Ministry of Health Malaysia, alongside progress report presentations by all AIPA member country parliaments,' according to the statement.
Also scheduled is a discussion session on the transformation of AIPACODD's role in addressing cross-border crime and the preparation and validation of the meeting's draft resolution.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives also announced that in conjunction with the meeting, a royal banquet will be held on June 10 in Kuantan, with the consent of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
'This royal banquet is the highest honour of the nation to the ASEAN parliamentary representatives, and the Sultan of Pahang's presence reflects the royal institution's support for the strategic role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing the drug threat and building a safer and more sustainable future for the region,' said the statement.
AIPACODD was officially established in 2017 as a platform to strengthen the role of parliaments in addressing drug issues through policy monitoring, information sharing and regional cooperation.
Through the AIPACODD platform, AIPA continues to play a key role in driving the coordination of ASEAN parliamentary collective efforts in addressing drug issues across social, economic, health, and regional security dimensions.

Honouring the contributions of a towering Malaysian

Vaithilingam has dedicated his life to public service. His contributions to the nation have now been immortalised in the biography, Vaithi – A Life of Service, written by veteran journalist A. Kathirasen. National Land Finance Cooperative Society managing director Datuk B. Sahadevan described the 91-year-old, fondly known as Vaithi, as someone who exemplifies Malaysia. 'I think that a lot of us tend to forget that we're Malaysians first before anything else. 'But when you see Datuk Vaithi, you see the perfect example of how to be a Malaysian.' The 32-chapter biography blends personal anecdotes with historical milestones from Vaithilingam's life. 'This book is largely based on Datuk Vaithi's memory, and I'm amazed by his ability to recall so many details from decades ago,' said Kathirasen during the launch of the book at Royal Lake Club in Kuala Lumpur. He explained that the language was kept plain to ensure accessibility to as many people as possible, especially young readers. 'Some chapters are in a question-and-answer format as if he was speaking directly to the reader rather than an intermediary, that is the writer,' he added. Former deputy International Trade and Industry minister Dr Ong Kian Ming praised the work as 'a wonderful read'. 'If I could capture the essence of this book from just one quote, it would be: The greatest purpose in life, the greatest achievement one could ever have in life, the greatest satisfaction one could ever get in life, can only be found in the service of others. 'The book really communicates Datuk Vaithi's priorities and purpose through action, thought and spirit,' he said. 'From leading the Malaysia Hindu Sangam to guiding the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism, Datuk Vaithi's contributions remain much needed to this day. 'Especially his approach and voice of reason in interfaith matters,' Ong added. Vaithilingam also played a key role in the development of Malaysian athletics. His involvement in sports began from the time he was a young teacher, and he has since been inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Hall of Fame for his contributions. Reflecting on his work, Vaithilingam said that service has been the guiding principle of his life. 'All my life I have been working not as an Indian, Malay or Chinese, but as a Malaysian. 'Whatever I did, whether it was sports, social activities, religion or education, it has always been as a Malaysian and for Malaysians. 'I faced a lot of obstacles before the publication of this book. 'My wife passed away and there was a break, then Covid-19 happened and my son Nantha also passed away last year. 'Despite all this, there was a determination to continue as this book is not just my story, it's a reflection of the many hands and hearts that have worked together to build bridges of understanding and compassion,' Vaithilingam added. Also present at the launch were former health minister Tan Sri Dr S. Subramaniam along with Malaysian sports legend and former OCM deputy president Tan Sri Dr M. Five girls charged in court over alleged abuse of Zara
Facing the law: A vehicle believed to be carrying five teenagers facing charges of using abusive language against Zara Qairina last month seen leaving the premises of the Kota Kinabalu Court Complex. — Bernama KOTA KINABALU: With tight security around the Kota Kinabalu court complex, five teenage girls were brought in via three vans – one of them a decoy – to face charges over the bullying of a schoolmate, Zara Qairina Mahathir. The three heavily tinted vans entered the court compound at 9.05am, with its occupants – believed to be the girls and their family members – hustled into the court through a back entrance. Inside the Children's Court, the five girls pleaded not guilty to charges of hurling abusive words against 13-year-old Zara Qairina, their hostel mate who died after an apparent fall from the third floor of her dormitory building in Papar on July 16. She was found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory and died a day later. The five were accused of common intention of allegedly uttering abusive words to Zara Qairina, which was heard by the victim and probably caused distress at the hostel between 10pm and 11pm on July 15. The charges were framed under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code. If convicted, the five face up to one year's imprisonment, a fine or both. As they were all underage, the girls' identities were withheld under the Child Act. Lawyer Datuk Ram Singh, representing the first accused, applied for a gag order during the proceeding, saying he did it 'for the children'. Judge Elsie Primus allowed the order. She set Sept 25 for the first pre-trial case management and Oct 16 for the second pre-trial case management. The trial proper will be held between Dec 8 and Dec 12 and from Dec 15-19, in open court. The court granted bail of RM5,000 each, with RM1,000 to be deposited and one surety required. It is learnt that they paid the bail. Police presence was heavy in and around the court compound and access to the Children's Court was further restricted, with officials conducting body and bag checks even on police officers and lawyers attending the proceedings. Only reporters bearing official tags were allowed to cover the proceedings, especially after several reporters had complained about unidentified people disrupting official media zones. About a dozen social media influencers standing outside the court compound were not allowed in. The gag order, meanwhile, caused some confusion as several lawyers declined to give details of the charges or even the plea of the five teenagers. However, deputy public prosecutor Nor Azizah Mohamad told reporters later that the five had pleaded not guilty. Lawyer Hamid Ismail, who represents Zara Qairina's family, explained that the gag order had nothing to do with VVIPs as claimed by some. 'This is Malaysian law,' he said. 'The Child Act clearly states that the identities of children must remain confidential, whether during investigation or trial.'
