Seven year itch: For coastal road project, Mumbai civic body plans to raze Rs 27 crore flyover inaugurated in Aug 2018
The move has raised eyebrows, with some calling it an example of bad planning and a waste of public money.
Savarkar flyover, inaugurated in Aug 2018 and locally called the MTNL flyover, runs from Radisson Hotel to Rustomjee Ozone. After demolition, it is proposed to come back in a new avatar, as the lower deck of a two-deck flyover.

Today's Savarkar flyover is an impediment to the construction of an elevated connector from the coastal road to Dindoshi.
"We studied the situation to see if there was any way out other than demolishing the flyover," an official said. "After finding no other option, we will now be proposing the demolition of the Savarkar flyover. We have proposed a double-decker flyover, the upper deck of which will act as a connector between Mindspace and Dindoshi court, while the lower deck will accommodate the (new) Savarkar flyover."
A proposal will soon be sent to the municipal commissioner for his sanction.
The official said that the stretch of the proposed coastal road from Mindspace to Dindoshi court, which will connect to the proposed Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), forms a part of one of the many project packages of Coastal Road 2. "The idea is to allow motorists to seamlessly connect from the coastal road to the GMLR tunnels and onwards to the eastern suburbs," the official said.
Municipal sources said a former BMC officer had pointed out that the Savarkar flyover would be coming in the way of the Coastal Road 2 project about a year ago but it was now that a proposal to resolve the issue was being worked out.
Former Goregaon corporator Deepak Thakur said the MTNL flyover is one of the most crucial connectors in the area, and demolishing it will lead to traffic chaos.
"Before the flyover was constructed, it would even take up to 45 minutes to cross the junction. Now, with its demolition planned, traffic going towards areas like Malad, Madh and Marve will be badly hit," he said, adding that contractors involved in the works had already begun a survey of the area.
The move has raised eyebrows as it involves dismantling a relatively new bridge to make way for infrastructure that will further alter the suburban landscape. Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh called it bad planning.
"The Coastal Road (North) has been in the planning for many years. How can we realise now that it will need to demolish a flyover which was built less than a decade ago? Further, this is public money that the administration is wasting.
Some accountability is required," Shaikh said.
Works on the coastal road have gained pace, with authorities conducting regular inspections of the site in the past few weeks.
The proposed demolition of the Goregaon flyover mirrors the recent removal of a major stretch of the Bandra (West) skywalk — dismantled between 2019 and 2024 — to make way for Metro Line 2B, which connects DN Nagar to Mandale.
The Coastal Road (North), or the Versova-Dahisar Link Road (VDLR), is a 22-km alignment that includes roads on the ground, elevated sections, stilts, a cable-stayed bridge, and a cut-and-cover tunnel beneath a creek.

Indian Man Flies To Vietnam To Buy MacBook, Saves Rs 36,000 And Gets An 11-Day Vacation
The man noted that the high cost of Apple devices in India is caused by expensive import tariffs, GST and Apple's premium pricing scheme. Buying duty-free goods during international trips is a popular hack among luxury shoppers. Recently, a Reddit user went viral for sharing how he managed to buy a new MacBook at a significantly lower price, while also enjoying an 11-day vacation in Vietnam. Surprisingly, the total cost of his trip plus the laptop turned out to be less than what he would've spent on just the MacBook in India. Sharing a breakdown of the expenses, the Redditor noted that the high cost of Apple devices in India is caused by expensive import tariffs, Goods and Services Tax (GST), and Apple's premium pricing scheme. But his plan saved him a lot of money despite getting a premium quality product. 'If you're planning to buy a MacBook or iPhone worth Rs 2 lakh+ in India, trust me, it's worth making a short trip to Vietnam. You'll get the device cheaper and squeeze in a mini vacation," he wrote on Reddit. According to the post, the traveller booked the cheapest round-trip flight to Hanoi, worked remotely during his stay, and spent his free time exploring the city. Determined to get the best deal, he visited around 15 stores in search of the lowest price. His strategy was to take advantage of Vietnam's reduced Apple prices and tourist-friendly VAT refund policy. He wrote, 'Always ask: 'Do you provide VAT refund documents for the airport?' Some stores won't." In India, the desired MacBook would cost approximately Rs 1,85,000, even with card incentives. However, by purchasing it in Vietnam from a store that produced the correct VAT documentation and claiming the return at the airport, he was able to obtain the same model for approximately Rs 1,48,000. This transaction alone saved him Rs 36,500, approximately the cost of his flight. What makes the strategy even more astounding is the total expense. The vacation cost approximately Rs 2,80,000, which included the MacBook, flight tickets, accommodation, meals, and other activities. After the VAT refund was processed, his total cost decreased to around Rs 1,97,000. After subtracting the cost of the MacBook, the total cost of the Vietnam trip was only Rs 48,000. Here's How Social Media Users Reacted The post immediately went viral, eliciting a range of reactions from other users. A person wrote, 'I have travelled to Vietnam twice in past and I just loved the country. Probably will be travelling again for work later this year, and I am definitely inspired by you." While another asked, 'Can you share with me the full list, where to stay, from where you board the flight in India, and how to manage to get the refund at the airport?" 'Such a great post. Although I just got my Mac your post really made me wanna visit Vietnam for no reason," wrote another one. top videos View all Someone else commented, 'Congrats on your MacBook and hope you had an amazing vacation. Even I was thinking of visiting Vietnam, maybe I will take a vacation there next year. Your post will definitely be helpful for many people planning to do a vacation as well as hunt for a Mac." Two years on, Rs 21 crore redevelopment of Thanjavur junction on the slow track
THANJAVUR: Two years on, the redevelopment of Thanjavur railway junction under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is yet to be completed, causing inconvenience to passengers due to the ongoing construction works. The foundation stone was laid on August 6, 2023 for the redevelopment of the station at a cost of Rs 21.17 crore. The redevelopment envisaged providing shelters to cover entire platforms, an arrival building, renovation of the existing terminal building, construction of a new parcel building and laying a road on the front side of the station with a parking facility and pedestrian walkway. Initially, the construction was supposed to be completed within 18 months. However, even after 24 months, only a few works have been completed. Out of the completed works are the new parcel office building and the existing terminal building, which has been renovated. Most of the remaining works are incomplete. M Gnanam, a passenger said, 'There has been water stagnation in the existing renovated terminal following rains on Tuesday night. One has to wade through ankle- deep water to access the ticket counters and to enter or exit the station.' On Wednesday when TNIE visited the station, the work of resurfacing the first platform was under way. The work on the arrival terminal is yet to be completed. All five platforms don't have fully covered shelters. The entrance arch is under construction with scaffolding still in place, and the buses could not move into the station premises. Railway sources said the contractor delayed the commencement of the works, and now the works are in full swing. 'We expect all the works will be completed by October 2025', officials of Tiruchy Division of Southern Railway told TNIE.

Haj pilgrims urged to avail of Vijayawada embarkation point
VIJAYAWADA: The Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Haj Committee, SK Hasan Basha, has urged Haj pilgrims to make full use of the Vijayawada Embarkation Point this year. He expressed gratitude to the State leadership for their commitment to the welfare of pilgrims and to retain embarkation point at Vijayawada. Addressing the media on Wednesday, Sk Hasan Basha said as promised in the election manifesto, the State government is providing Rs 1 lakh financial assistance to each Hajj pilgrim and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu successfully secured Vijayawada as an official embarkation point for Haj. He said Haj pilgrims traveling this year are encouraged to choose Vijayawada as their departure point to ensure the continuation of these services in future. He said the coalition government has taken significant steps to improve facilities for pilgrims, correcting previous shortcomings. The Chairman thanked CM Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, and Education Minister Nara Lokesh for their active support. Hasan Basha stated that the Central Haj Committee has allotted 2,550 slots for Andhra Pradesh pilgrims this year. He recalled that last year, 72 pilgrims from Vijayawada received Rs 1 lakh each from the coalition government, which was widely appreciated. He said in order to retain the embarkation point in Vijayawada in future, a large number of pilgrims must depart from Vijayawada Airport only. So far, over 1,900 pilgrims have already applied through Vijayawada, and a request has been submitted to the Central Haj Committee to extend the application deadline, which ends on August 7, he added. Hasan Basha also noted that previously, most pilgrims travelled via Hyderabad and Bengaluru, but this year, the Haj Committee has actively promoted Vijayawada to increase awareness and participation.
