The NFL has made a foray into scheduling Christmas Day games in recent seasons, but the holiday with which it remains most closely associated is Thanksgiving.
NFL football has been a part of Thanksgiving Day since former Detroit Lions owner George A. Richards had the idea to host the Chicago Bears on the holiday in 1934. Nearly a century later, the tradition is still going strong, with the NFL now scheduling a yearly tripleheader to give fans football to go along with the celebration centered on family, friends and food.
The Lions always host the first Thanksgiving game as a nod to the tradition's origins. The Dallas Cowboys are the other team that hosts an annual contest on the holiday; they have been doing so since 1966, when they copycatted the Lions' holiday tradition to thrust themselves into the national spotlight, with great success.
In recent years, the NFL has punctuated the two traditional games with a marquee night game matchup to close out a holiday tripleheader.
Which teams will be playing on Thanksgiving in 2025? The NFL revealed its schedule for the holiday as part of its mid-May schedule release.

Travis Hunter has already hit the practice field for the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Both players debuted in the video game with 79, so Hunter isn't far off from them whatsoever. Cowboys' $97 million man targeting Week 1 return after 2 years of injuries After tearing his ACL last season, Diggs has his sights set on returning for the season opener. Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, who missed the final six games last season after undergoing surgery to repair a knee injury, has his sights set on returning Week 1 vs the Philadelphia Eagles, according to reporter Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. While the All-Pro is hoping to follow through on his first major goal of the upcoming 2025 season, it will ultimately come down to how well he progresses during training camp. Dallas signed Diggs to a five-year, $97 million extension heading into the 2023 season, but he hasn't played much since then. The former 2020 second-round pick has battled through the injury bug and has missed plenty of football, 21 games to be exact, over the past two seasons, most notably in 2023 after a gruesome ACL tear suffered during a September practice sidelined him for 15 games. Before the injuries came into the picture, Diggs had firmly established himself as one of the NFL's premier playmakers on the back end. His ability to take away a side of the field, bait quarterbacks into mistakes, and create game-changing turnovers made him a centerpiece of Dallas' defense and a massive piece to replace once he went down. Now under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys will be eager to see Diggs back in the fold as well as hope to see Diggs and fellow All-Pro teammate DaRon Bland see plenty of action on the field at the same time.
