Centre targets December for digitisation of land right records
The central government is aggressively pursuing the complete digitisation of land records across India by December, excluding the north-eastern states and Ladakh, to pave the way for future land reforms. With significant progress already made, including the digitisation of nearly all available land records and cadastral maps, this initiative aims to spur economic growth and improve transparency.

This would be a significant step in paving the way for future land reforms in the country to spur economic growth, he added.
So far, 372.12 million, or 99.8%, of available land records, have been digitised, according to the latest land resources department data. Similarly, 97.3% of cadastral maps have been digitised. As many as 89.7% of revenue courts and all the sub-registrar offices across the country have been computerised.
The Centre is in regular talks with states to remove any remaining hurdles in the digitisation efforts, the official said.Records are not available in most parts of the north-eastern states due to the community ownership of land. Ladakh started the digitisation of land records a couple of years ago and will need some more time to wrap up the exercise, the official said.Land reforms are among the most critical measures that the government is planning to initiate to bolster the market and drive up economic expansion over the medium-to-long term amid tariff and other global headwinds.
Senior finance ministry officials have already stated that land reforms would be undertaken without snatching away ownership from people. The digitisation of land ownerships is an absolute prerequisite for that.The land resources department had launched the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme in 2016 by revamping an earlier scheme to improve real-time information on land rights, optimise the use of land resources, reduce the scope of disputes and improve transparency in such record maintenance systems. The central government fully funds this programme, which is implemented with the help of states.

Centre to update WPI, IIP; announces launch of new Producer Price Index
New Delhi: The Centre announced that a nationwide survey will be done to update the country's Wholesale Price Index (WPI), introduce a Producer Price Index (PPI), and revise the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) to the 2022-23 base year. The move aims to make inflation and industrial output measures more representative of today's manufacturing sector. The WPI tracks price changes of goods at the wholesale level, focussing on bulk transactions between businesses. The current base year, 2011-12, is outdated due to significant economic changes over the past decade. PPI tracks prices received by service providers or manufacturers before their goods reach the wholesale market. IIP measures industrial output in sectors like manufacturing, mining, and electricity. Revision of its base year will ensure it reflects current industrial activity, addressing outdated production patterns in the 2011-12 base year. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced that the exercise will start in the month of August, and data for the new series will be compiled from April 2022. As the manufacturing sector has evolved significantly in the past decade, key economic indicators may become outdated without an update. Analysts say that this step will help India align with international statistical standards. The National Statistical Office's Field Operations Division is authorised to survey the Collection of Statistics Act. As many as 26 Statistics Officers will lead regional offices, supported by officials authorised to inspect GST invoices, e-way bills, balance sheets, and other records to verify submissions. 'The drive will cover all states and union territories, targeting organised manufacturing establishments engaged in activities such as manufacturing, repair, gas, water supply, and cold storage,' an official release said. Owners or managers of factories or establishments registered under laws such as the Factories Act, Companies Act, Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, and other statutory bodies can be asked to provide data. If separate details for each unit are unavailable, combined information for all units under the same management in a state or union territory can be submitted. Statistics Officers can give respondents up to a month, or a period deemed suitable, to submit information, including via an online portal. Enforcement provisions include adjudicating officers who can impose penalties for non-compliance, and an appellate authority for grievance redressal. The data will be processed by the Office of the Economic Adviser in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Losing hope on Jammu and Kashmir being granted statehood, says CM Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that his hope about the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is fading, PTI reported. 'My well-wishers told me something big for Jammu and Kashmir will be announced from Delhi on Independence Day,' the chief minister said during his Independence Day address in Srinagar. 'I was even told that papers were being prepared [for statehood]. We waited, but nothing happened.' It also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. In December 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the validity of the 2019 order abrogating Article 370 and ordered the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In January, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that he wanted to give the Centre the 'first opportunity' to restore the Union Territory's statehood before seeking legal recourse. The National Conference leader told reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself committed to restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. 'Every government or every individual has recourse to courts,' Omar Abdullah said. 'But that was never going to be our first option.'
