Defence corridors in Karnataka will bolster ‘Make in India' mission: CM Siddaramaiah
Speaking to media persons in New Delhi after meeting Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the Union Minister has accepted the request for IAF's participation in Dasara and gave a positive response to the other two demands.
The CM was accompanied by Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, Industries Minister MB Patil, and ministers KJ George and Byrati Suresh.
In a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister, the CM sought support for establishing two Defence Industrial Corridors, one each in North Karnataka and South Karnataka. 'This initiative will bolster the Make in India mission, enhance indigenous production, and generate skilled employment,' the CM stated.
The CM stated that North Karnataka region, covering Belagavi, Hubbali-Dharwad, and Vijayapura districts, boasts a vibrant defence manufacturing ecosystem, while South Karnataka region, particularly Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Bangalore Rural, has a rich history of Aerospace and Defence excellence. 'With HAL headquartered here, TASL establishing final assembly line for C130J, and Air India and Indigo ramping up MRO operations, South Karnataka is poised to be the epicenter for Aerospace and Defence manufacturing for India,' the CM stated.
Siddaramaiah stated that the proposed corridors will leverage this existing ecosystem and infrastructure, further cementing Karnataka's reputation as the Defence Capital of India. The CM also informed Singh that the Global Investors Meet Invest Karnataka 2025 had secured commitments of approximately Rs 10.27 lakh crore, of which Rs 4.34 lakh crore (42%) have already been converted.
Air show during Dasara
The CM requested the Ministry of Defence to consider the participation of the Indian Air Force in the form of an aerial display by Surya Kiran, Sarang, and other aerobatic teams during the upcoming Mysuru Dasara 2025 celebrations, from September 22 to October 2.
In 2017, 2019, and 2023, the IAF conducted air shows in Mysuru. 'These shows not only captivated the audiences but also instilled a sense of pride and admiration among the people about the advanced capabilities and technological excellence of the Indian Armed Forces,' the CM stated.

Nirmiti Kendras fall under RTI Act ambit, rules Karnataka HC
The Karnataka High Court ruled last week that Nirmiti Kendras, which were set up to develop construction skills and carry out state civil contracts, are subject to the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The order was passed by a single-judge bench of Justice Suraj Govindaraj on August 6. The bench also imposed an additional cost of Rs 50,000 on the Nirmiti Kendra in Chitradurga district, which had approached the high court against a State Information Commission order directing it to pay a cost of Rs 25,000 and submit certain documents sought by an RTI applicant in 2017. The petition argued that a Nirmiti Kendra is a private society, and this being the case, does not count as a 'public authority' under the RTI Act. Unless a body is a public authority, they are not bound to provide such information, the petition claimed. The opposing counsel argued that the Nirmiti Kendra was established to carry out the activities of the state, and the state government had substantial control and financed it, making it subject to the RTI Act. He also argued that even if it was an NGO, this would still apply as it was financed by the government. The bench observed that Nirmiti Kendras were established on the recommendation of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, and government officers, including IAS and Karnataka Administrative Service officers, ran their daily operations. It also pointed out that the source of funding was the Housing and Urban Development Corporation, a public sector entity. This being the case, the court ruled, the Kendras were subject to the RTI Act. 'It is not expected of a governmental authority and the officers of the Nirmathi Kendra, who are government officers, to have taken such a stand that a Nirmathi Kendra would not come within the purview of the RTI Act,' the bench said. 'The attempt made by the officers of Nirmathi Kendra to suppress such transparency leaves much to be desired and does not inspire confidence. By way of such conduct, the petitioner Nirmathi Kendra has successfully avoided disclosure of information and details,' it added.

Mr. Modi also noted that millions of people were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence caused by the Partition. Through the Partition, British India was divided into two independent countries: India and Pakistan. India will celebrate its Independence Day on Friday.

India took ‘minimal credible steps' to stop human rights abuses: US government report
India took ' minimal credible steps ' to identify and punish officials who committed human rights abuses, the United States government said in a report on Tuesday. The US State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor said in its 2024 country report that significant human rights problems in India included credible reports of arbitrary or unlawful killings, disappearances, torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The Indian government is yet to comment on the report. The report also flagged arbitrary arrests or detentions, transnational repression against persons from another country, serious abuses in a conflict, unlawful recruitment or use of children in armed conflict by Maoist groups, and instances of coerced abortion or forced sterilisation. There were 'serious restrictions' on the freedom of expression and press freedom, including violence or threats of violence against journalists, unjustified arrests or prosecutions of journalists and censorship. The report added that the ethnic conflict in Manipur had continued to result in human rights abuses in 2024. The armed forces of the Union government 'maintained a buffer zone between the two factions, but media reported there was continued conflict' with 48 civilian deaths as of October 29 [2024], said the US State Department. The ethnic clashes between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities started in May 2023. At least 260 persons have been killed and more than 59,000 persons displaced since the violence broke out. There were periodic upticks in violence in 2024. President's Rule was imposed in the state on February 13, four days after Bharatiya Janata Party leader N Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister. The police used stun guns and fired tear gas shells to disperse student-led protests criticising the government's failure to resolve the conflict in Manipur, the US report noted. The report also noted that incidents of terrorism had led to the deaths of security personnel and civilians in Jammu and Kashmir, the North East and the areas affected by the Maoist insurgency. There were reports of communal violence. Authorities investigated and prosecuted terrorism-related abuses.
