Teenager who killed elderly dog walker loses manslaughter appeal
A teenage boy who beat an elderly dog walker to death has lost his appeal to have his manslaughter sentence changed in the Court of Appeal.
Bhim Kohli, 80, suffered a broken neck and fractured ribs after being kicked and punched by the balaclava-clad 15-year-old in Franklin Park, near Leicester, last September.
Some of his last moments were filmed by the boy's friend, a 13-year-old girl, and show him being slapped with a slider, walking towards the park exit calling for help, and then lying motionless on the ground.
The grandfather died in hospital the following day.
Det Ch Insp Sinski said the boy had Snapchat accounts under two names – one boasting of his punching power and another referring to using a disguise.
'It was the prosecution case he revelled in his reputation as a hard man and his propensity to violence,' he said.
'So yes, social media did feature in this.'
Mr Kohli's daughter said the teenagers had 'humiliated' her father in an 'utterly disgusting' attack.
Susan Kohli said: 'Videos of the incident were filmed and shockingly found on the girl's phone. Dad did not deserve this, and we wouldn't wish this pain on anyone else.
'One of the videos showed dad on his knees being hit over the head with the boy's slider (shoe). A loud horrible slapping sound is heard when the boy struck dad.
'Hearing the girl laugh at this assault on dad is utterly disgusting. This sound plays over and over in our heads.
'Losing dad in these cruel, violent, and deeply shocking circumstances feels like our hearts have been pulled apart. We can't put into words the pain we feel every day, and this has magnified during the trial.'
Ms Kohli described her father as a 'loving dad, grandad, brother and uncle' who was 'good fun to be around'.
She said: 'He was the person who knitted our family together and we miss him every second of every day. Our home feels so empty without him and will never be the same.'

Woman caught shoving 400 Jellycats down her trousers fined £120
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A thief who stole nearly £1,000 worth of Jellycat toys has been fined £120. Samantha Lawrence went on a two-day spree, stealing dozens of soft toys from two businesses by shoving them down her trousers. The 38-year-old stole toys worth around £650 from St Peter's Garden Centre in Worcester on June 7, before taking almost £300 worth of the toys from The Valley shopping centre in Evesham in two separate thefts on June 8. Incredible CCTV caught Lawrence as she frantically stole the popular soft toys, shoving them into bags as well as down her trousers before running out of the shop. She even tried to force a large £75 rabbit-themed bag into her waistband. She was identified using the footage and when police arrived at her home in Norton, Evesham, officers found hundreds of stolen Jellycats. In total, Lawrence stole toys worth £948.28. Lauren Millichip, prosecuting, told Worcester magistrates court: 'Officers attended her address and found a quantity of Jellycats, some of these she said she had bought. 'She told officers she had gone into the stores with the intention of stealing the Jellycats.' Chris Aggri, defending, said the CCTV of Lawrence's theft had gone viral online and the response had caused her mental health to suffer. She is now taking medication for anxiety, the court heard. He explained: 'She has been targeted on social media and her mental health has suffered as a result. 'She has learned her lesson and is deeply remorseful.' Lawrence admitted three counts of theft and was ordered to pay compensation to the shops she stole from. She was also fined £120 and ordered to pay a £48 victim surcharge. Chair of the bench Caroline Taylor said: 'We've listened to what's been said. The matters are serious, you have deliberately targeted the stores, one on two separate occasions. 'They are not insignificant amounts of money. 'You will pay compensation of £657.79 to St Peter's and £292.49 to The Valley. 'We've taken into account your guilty plea, so a fine of £180 has been reduced to £120 due to that guilty plea. 'You will also pay a £48 victim surcharge.' Speaking to Metro at the time, a manager at St Peter's Garden Centre said they checked their CCTV after the shop alarm went off to find Lawrence had been 'scouting out' their large selection of the soft toys. Jamie Armstrong explained: 'At first we were looking back at the footage and it was one or two little Jellycats, popping them down the trousers. 'Then you get to 15 minutes in and she goes for it. She walks in as a regular woman and walks out looking eight months pregnant. 'We are a family-run garden centre so we're not as powerful at the big chains or supermarkets. More Trending 'We don't have as much budget for security, so it does feel like we get targeted.' Jellycat toys have seen an explosion in popularity in recent years, with rare and retired designs being resold for hundreds of pounds. But their high resale value has made them a target for thieves. Last December the owner of a garden centre revealed how he tracked down a shoplifter who had stolen Jellycats from his shop to sell online. Shoplifting is at record levels with 469,788 offences recorded in England and Wales in the year to June 2024, according to the Office for National Statistics. Oasis ‘scam' probe launched as Scots mum accused of selling fake tickets for hundreds of pounds
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MUM is at the centre of a cop probe amid claims Oasis fans forked out thousands of pounds for tickets that didn't exist. Police are investigating allegations that Colleen Ross, 37, of Wallyford, East Lothian, failed to deliver gold-dust Murrayfield briefs to dozens of desperate music lovers. The pair, from Derby, paid a £100 deposit to the holistic therapist before heading north for last Friday's mega-gig at Murrayfield. But on arrival the night before, they were told there had been a 'mess-up' over transferring tickets. Teacher Nikki said: 'Ross claimed they were still 'pending' and she was sorry. I ended up having to fork out £650 to secure two tickets from the viagogo resale site. 'The concert was a present for my husband's birthday and I didn't want to let him down.' But Nikki described the shambles as a 'sh** scam'. She got her £100 deposit refunded days later. But her story is one of dozens linked to Ross. Cops are probing complaints from Oasis fans who claim they sent cash to her for briefs that never arrived. Karen Alderton, 39, said she paid £300 for two tickets to one of the band's sell-out shows to surprise her daughter on her 18th birthday. The mum of three, from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, told The Scottish Sun: 'I've known Colleen for about eight years. I trusted her. 'She advertised the Oasis ones on Snapchat, saying she was selling her daughter's tickets because she wanted to go on holiday instead. I told her I'd buy them. But I started seeing stuff online about her. So I sent a message, asking when the tickets would be transferred. Dad who plunged to his death 'from top tier' of Wembley Oasis gig is pictured - as family pay tribute to 'role model' 'She totally bit my head off. She said she was still waiting and would send them as soon as she got them. 'I told her to send my refund or I'd go to her house. I got the money back. But I had to pay £1,100 for two Oasis tickets on a resale site.' There was no answer at Ross's detached home today. Neighbours said she hadn't been seen for several days. Karen added: 'I got my cash back but everybody else needs to get it. 'Another parent told me how her daughter tried to get in at Murrayfield on Saturday with a screenshot of a ticket from Colleen. But it didn't work. She has to stop what she's doing.' Darrah Fielding, 26, a student from Glasgow, paid Ross £280 for two briefs that never appeared. She also got the cash refunded but had to spend £500 on viagogo to get to the concert. Mum-of-one Darrah recalled: 'She was extremely convincing and seemed genuine. But she has let people down and caused chaos. She's a cheeky moneygrabber and should be ashamed of herself.' Many fans went online to tell of their dealings with Ross. David, 42, from Falkirk, sent her £140 for a standing ticket for Friday's show by the rockers, who released the 1998 compilation album The Masterplan. He said: 'She contacted me after I put a message on a site in July. 'Later, she said she was going into hospital and would send the tickets two to three days before the concert. 'I knew something was up. I paid £260 for one from elsewhere. 'Then I found out hundreds of people making similar claims. She has broken a lot of hearts. She sent me the refund but many others missed out.' Some went on to social media to warn other fans. One said: 'Got properly done by that Colleen Ross. Ruined my weekend.' A third warned: 'She's scammed people out of thousands.' Police Scotland said: 'We received a report of fraud in the Edinburgh area. Enquiries are at an early stage.'

Quadbike rider flips over after ramming police car in Liverpool
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A police officer came within inches of injury trying to arrest a man after a quadbike rammed into a police car. Officers were on patrol in the Kensington area of Liverpool on Tuesday evening when they spotted a man pushing a quadbike with no registration plate. The man rode away, but officers in a patrol car found the quadbike again shortly after. The quadbike driver allegedly rammed the quadbike into the police car, reversed into a parked car, and then rammed the police car a second time which caused the quadbike to mount the bonnet and flip over onto its side. A police officer, who had got out of the car to try and stop the rider, only narrowly avoided being hit by the quadbike. The driver was arrested and then taken to hospital for treatment before later being discharged. A 29-year-old man from Everton was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and without insurance and acquiring/using/possessing criminal property. He was assessed in hospital and later taken into police custody. Chief Inspector Steve Robinson of Merseyside Police said: 'Thankfully no officers were hurt during the course of this incident, but the results of the suspect's reckless actions could have been far worse. 'We will never tolerate people who put the safety of themselves and other road users at risk by driving uninsured vehicles with no licence in a dangerous manner. More Trending 'Our officers turn up to work every day knowing they could face challenging and dynamic situations. They do so willingly because they are committed to protecting the public from harm. 'But there can never be any excuse for anyone deliberately driving at officers knowing full well that their actions could cause serious injury or worse. 'Our officers were on proactive patrol to disrupt criminality and keep our communities in Liverpool safe. 'The last thing they should have to be dealing with is a suspect ramming their vehicle in this way and we are determined to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice.'
