'Historic' Trade Deal With UK Shows World's Trust In India: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described the recently concluded FTA between India and UK as 'historic,' and said the trade pact showed the world's trust in the country.
As regards Operation Sindoor, he said weapons manufactured under the 'Make in India' initiative played a great role during the cross-border military offensive in destroying enemy targets and made enemies lose sleep.
The PM inaugurated, laid foundation stones and dedicated projects worth Rs 4,900 crore here and underscored the NDA government's commitment towards Tamil Nadu's growth.
In his address after inaugurating the projects, PM Modi said he was blessed to directly land in Tamil Nadu after completing his foreign tour during which the India-UK Free Trade Agreement was signed before his visit to the Maldives.
The trade pact with Britain was 'historic.' "India and Britain signed a FTA. This shows the growing trust of the world and our self-confidence. We will make Viksit (developed) Bharat and Viksit Tamil Nadu with this self-confidence," PM Modi said.
"FTA with Britain adds pace to our vision of Viksit Bharat, Viksit TN," the PM, clad in a traditional veshti (dhoti), shirt and an 'angavastram' worn around the neck, said. He landed here directly after wrapping up his official tour of the Maldives.
Promising a developed India and Tamil Nadu, he said, "infrastructure and energy are the backbone of any state's development; our focus on infrastructure and energy in last 11 years shows our commitment to TN's growth." The NDA government has constructed Atal Sethu, Sonmarg Tunnel, Bogibeel bridge in different parts of the country and these created thousands of job opportunities.
As regards the railways, he said it is the lifeline of industrial growth.
The projects he inaugurated on Saturday are related to airport, highways, railways, port and power in Tamil Nadu and he said that infrastructure.
The inaugurated projects include a new state-of-the-art Tuticorin airport terminal building, developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 450 crore.
As regards railway projects, it includes the electrification of the 90 km Madurai-Bodinayakkanur line, commissioned at a cost of Rs 99 Crore and the Rs 650 crore worth doubling of the 21 km Nagercoil Town-Kanniyakumari section.
The PM dedicated to the nation, two strategically significant highway projects-- 4-laning of 50 km Sethiyathope-Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, developed at a cost Rs 2,350 crore and 6-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, built at around Rs 200 crore.
He inaugurated the North Cargo Berth-III with a cargo handling capacity of 6.96 MMTPA at V O Chidambaranar Port established at a cost of Rs 285 crore.
On the occasion, he invoked legendary freedom fighters from the region--VO Chidambaram Pillai, king Veerapandia Kattabomman and chieftain Veeran Azhagu Muthukon.
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi participated in the event. State Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu presented a memento, a replica of the iconic Valluvar Kottam in Chennai, to the prime minister on the occasion.
Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, Union Minister of State L Murugan, TN Social Welfare Minister P Geetha Jeevan, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi and top officials took part.

Delhi HC issues notice in petition challenging UPSC decision barring women from military academies through CDS exam

(Representative photo) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice in a petition challenging the Union Public Services Commission's (UPSC) decision barring women from applying to military academies through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination. A bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Tushar Rao Gedela directed the Centre and UPSC to file their response in a petition filed by Kush Kalra, and fixed the next hearing for November 12. In his petition, Kalra asserted that UPSC's May 28 advertisement for the CDS-II Examination 2025, restricting women from applying to three of the four service branches—the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun; Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala; and Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad—was arbitrary and violative of the fundamental right to equality and profession. The notification only permits women to apply to the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, in the Short Service Commission (SSC) course. Kalra, in his plea, contended through advocate Jyotika Kalra, sought to highlight the inconsistency between the exclusion and the government's own statement in the same notification, which claimed it 'strives to have a workforce which reflects gender balance and women candidates are encouraged to apply.' Such a contradiction, Kalra argued, exposes a systemic and discriminatory barrier that undermines the rights of aspiring women candidates and runs counter to constitutional principles and the Supreme Court's 2020 ruling on permanent commission. In February 2020, the Supreme Court, while allowing permanent commission to women officers in the Army, ruled that restricting the appointment of women to command positions was unconstitutional. To be sure, the Centre in September 2021, after the Supreme Court's nudge, informed the court about its decision to induct women into the National Defence Academy (NDA). However, the top court in January 2022 demanded an explanation from the Union government on restricting the intake of women cadets in the upcoming session of the NDA to 19– the same as last year. Citing the example of Col Sofyia Qureshi, one of the two women officers who briefed the media after India's execution of Operation Sindoor, Kalra in his petition asserted that denying entry to women through CDS would deprive the country of such officers. 'This exclusion of women candidates from the opportunity to get employed through CDS, becomes a hurdle in the career advancement opportunities for women officers in the armed forces. The categorical exclusion of women candidates from applying for the CDS examination and getting selected for IMA, AFA and INA solely on the grounds of sex, without any reasonable or justifiable explanations is a violation of the fundamental right to equality,' the petition read. Kalra said that even though the high court in April directed the Centre to take a call on the entry of women in CDS within eight weeks, no decision has been taken until now.

The BMC polls, significant for all major political parties, are expected to be announced soon. KSLU to get dedicated administrative building after 15 yrs
Hubballi: After more than 15 years since its establishment, Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) in Hubballi is set to have its own dedicated administrative building. The construction of the G+3 structure is under way on 2.4 acres, at an estimated cost of Rs 39.5 crore. The building is expected to be completed by May 2026. KSLU, established in Jan 2009, currently operates from a former PWD guest house that was repurposed into an administrative office. Spread over a 55-acre campus, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in constitutional law, intellectual property rights, business and trade law, criminal law, and international law. While around 1,200 students study on the campus, the university has a total student strength of approximately 45,000 across the state. The total built-up area of the four-storey structure will be 94,761 sq. ft. The ground floor will be 24,440 sq. ft, first floor 20,321 sq. ft, second floor 22,255 sq. ft, and third floor 20,321 sq. ft. KSLU vice-chancellor Prof C Basavaraju told TOI that the new building is being constructed on 2.4 acres in front of the existing building. "The project faced land allocation issues earlier. The second floor will accommodate the finance section, ICT section, syndicate zone and cabins, student welfare and development section, academic zone and toilets. The third floor will feature the engineering section, SC/ST records cell, planning and management office, NSS office, administrative section, and toilets.
