James Milner will wear number 20 at Brighton in memory of Diogo Jota

The Portuguese forward died aged 28 last month in a car crash, alongside his brother Andre Silva, just weeks after helping Liverpool clinch Premier League title glory. Liverpool have retired the number 20 jersey worn by Jota in his five seasons at Anfield, three of them alongside Milner before the veteran England midfielder moved to Brighton in the summer of 2023. The lowdown on our new 25/26 numbers… 💬 — Brighton & Hove Albion (@OfficialBHAFC) August 1, 2025 With Carlos Baleba opting to have 17 on his back ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and vacating 20, Milner, who has been Brighton's number six, has swooped in to pay a touching tribute to Jota. 'Once I heard Carlos was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,' Milner said on the club's X channel. 'He was an amazing player who I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. 'It will be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League this year.' Milner – whose contract was extended by Brighton in June for another season, which will take him past his 40th birthday – was among a number of Jota's former team-mates who attended his funeral in July.

Alexander Isak responds to Man Utd approach with £110m Liverpool bid rejected

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has received a surprise approach from Manchester United, according to reports. Liverpool have seen their £110 million bid for the 25-year-old rejected by Newcastle this week. The Premier League champions are now willing to end talks with Newcastle and are not planning to increase their offer for the Sweden international. Newcastle, meanwhile, are understood to be holding out for a £150m fee for their striker, who has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances during his three years at St James' Park. Manchester United are also in the market for a new striker and are now pushing ahead with a deal to sign RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko before the start of the new Premier League season. However, Sky Germany report that United made an enquiry for Isak this week but the striker has made it clear that he only wants to join Liverpool. Isak is attempting to force through a move away from St James' Park and is currently training away from the first-team squad in Spain at his former club Real Sociedad. The striker joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a £60m deal in August 2022. Speaking last week, Alan Shearer urged Newcastle to sell Isak if their asking price is met. More Trending 'Eddie Howe has to use all his persuasive powers to do what he can and try to make him stay at least one more year,' Shearer told Betfair. 'If that can't happen then it is what it is. You have to get the very best deal for the football club and if someone is prepared to pay north of £150 million, and if he really, really wants to go, you can't step in his way. 'Isak has been brilliant for Newcastle, helped us achieve our dream of winning a trophy and if there's no way whatsoever that he can be persuaded to stay at Newcastle, then they have to get the best deal possible and if someone's prepared to pay what they want, you have to say thank you and build for the future. 'There's no individual bigger than the football club.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Celtic transfer latest as Viktor Eriksson ‘pursuit' gets emphatic response and Ambrosino loan 'considered'

Brendan Rodgers is desperate to bolster his squad ahead of the coming season Serie A newboys Cremonese are reportedly weighing up a loan bid for Celtic target Giuseppe Ambrosino. ‌ The Italy U21 international has returned to parent club Napoli after a loan spell in Serie B with Frosinone last year but faces an uphill battle to force his way into the Scudetto winners' manager Antonio Conte's plans. ‌ Ambrosino was touted as a potential target for Brendan Rodgers last month, with the Irishman still on the hunt for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season, with their huge Champions League qualification play-off now just weeks away. ‌ However, Cremonese have also been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, and Il Giorno now claim that they are considering a loan swoop for the attacker. The report adds that the Cremona side are hopeful that their good relations with Napoli will allow them to seal a loan deal for the youngster. Meanwhile, Celtic have been told that Hammarby defender Viktor Eriksson is not for sale amid reports that the Hoops had sent scouts to watch the Swede in action. Parkhead Head of Football Operations Paul Tisdale is said to have taken in Hammarby's 2-1 away victory against Belgian outfit Charleroi on Thursday that booked their place in the third qualifying round of the Conference League, with Erilksson himself bagging the all-important winner in the final minute of extra time. Hammarby boss Kim Hellberg is unaware of any interest from Celts but insists that the centre back isn't going anywhere. ‌ Asked about the player's future after their win against Charleroi, he replied: "He's not for sale. "He has played every minute of these last four games. It is a very big moment for me too. "I have worked with him for four years in Varnamo, in Hammarby now. I have seen how hard he has worked, and developed as a person and a player. I am so, so proud of him." ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Celtic page and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season.
