Telangana CM requests Centre to take quick decision on BC quota hike
The Telangana State Assembly passed two Bills on March 17 this year enhancing the reservations for BCs to 42% in the three fields and these Bills are not prepared haphazardly. The government conducted scientific and in-depth exercise for almost a year besides spending ₹160 crore on caste census conducted for 50 days through 1.03 lakh trained enumerators. As many as 66.39% families in rural areas and 45.15 lakh in towns, a total of 1.12 crore families, are surveyed and the survey revealed that BCs constituted 56.33%.
The government sought the Centre's cooperation in implementation of the enhanced reservations.
'I once again demand the Centre from the Golconda fort to take a quick decision on the pending bills,' he said. The Chief Minister made the appeal during his Independence Day speech after hoisting the national flag at the historic fort on Friday (August 15, 2025).
In his more than one-hour address, Mr. Reddy outlined the various initiatives taken by the 'people's government' since it took over the reins in December 2023 including crop loan waiver, Indiramma houses, recruitment to vacant posts, stern action to prevent drugs and others. The government had decided to spend ₹22,500 crore on Indiramma housing scheme, 4.5 lakh houses would be constructed during the current year.
The scheme had no political involvement and beneficiaries need not pay commissions. Poverty was the only criterion to be eligible for securing the houses and the government for the first time sanctioned 22,016 houses to tribes in the ITDA areas of the State.
The Chief Minister suspected a conspiracy to make youth addicted to drugs in the last 10 years, but the government aborted it and strict measures were taken so that people would not even hear the word drugs. A new system was developed in the name of Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) which wad closely monitoring every corner of the State even as strong steps were initiated to curb drug trafficking and create fear among peddlers.
Simultaneously, the government gave priority to provide employment to youth. Accordingly, the public service commission was reformed and more than 60,000 vacancies filled in just 20 months adopting a transparent mechanism in the conduct of the exams. Referring to the irrigation projects, the Chief Minister said the State government was completing pending projects with proper plans to provide irrigation water to the last ayacut of the State.
He recalled how the previous government took up Kaleshwaram project which collapsed within few years and cautioned people about vested interests that were trying to divert attention from the previous failures. 'We will not compromise in achieving our judicious share of water from Godavari and Krishna rivers. We will strategically move in that direction,' he asserted adding the government was working on strategical plans for achieving permanent rights in the utilisation of water.
Telangana's debts and arrears
Elaborating on the welfare and development projects that go hand in hand in the people's government, Mr. Reddy, however, expressed concern that the previous government left the State with mounting debts and arrears of ₹8.21 lakh crore. Of these, ₹6.71 lakh crore were debts and ₹40,154 crore were dues relating to payment for employees and other schemes and ₹1.09 lakh crore dues were on account of the SC, ST sub-plan, Singareni, electricity and other departments.
'From the total debt, we have completed debt servicing of ₹2.20 lakh crore which included ₹1.32 lakh crore principal and ₹88,178 crore interest amount till date,' he said.

Odisha announces 21 NACs to boost infrastructure and services under urbanisation
The Mohan Majhi Government on Friday (August 15, 2025) announced the creation of 21 new Notified Area Councils (NACs) to boost infrastructure and services in line with Odisha's urbanisation needs. 'Better infrastructure and urbanisation are key components of development. Only 17% of our population lives in urban areas. Considering the State's rapid growth and people's aspirations, our government has decided to establish 21 more NACs,' Chief Minister Mohan Majhi declared during the Independence Day celebrations here. The creation of NACs was a major campaign plank ahead of the 2024 elections. The previous Naveen Patnaik Government had promised to set up NACs and municipalities to woo semi-urban voters, but the names were never announced. The Majhi Government also unveiled a welfare measure under which every family covered by the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will receive an additional 5 kg of rice per month for the next three months, benefiting 27 lakh families. After unfurling the Tricolour, Mr. Majhi dwelt at length on women's empowerment and safety — an issue on which the Opposition parties had been sharply critical. 'I have said on various platforms that the government follows a policy of zero tolerance towards crimes against women. Anyone committing violence against women — no matter how powerful or influential — belongs behind bars, not in civilised society,' he asserted. The CM, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the police had been given full authority to take necessary action. 'I have issued clear instructions that any neglect of women's safety will invite strict legal action. While law and order is generally under control, it must become more effective and robust,' he said. The State Government has recently faced criticism following a spate of incidents — including four girls committing self-immolation and several cases of gang rape and sexual assault — with both the Congress and Biju Janata Dal attacking its handling of women's safety.

Zelenskyy Urges India's Help To End Russia-Ukraine War As Trump Meets Putin At Alaska
Last Updated: Zelenskyy extended wishes to Modi on the occasion of India's Independence Day and referenced their recent phone call earlier this week. As US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet in Anchorage, Alaska, for talks aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong concerns about being left out of the negotiations. Zelenskyy insists that no final deal should be reached without Ukraine's direct involvement. Amid mounting anxiety over the summit, Zelenskyy has turned to India, reaching out with a symbolic and timely message for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Just hours before the Trump-Putin meeting began, Zelenskyy extended wishes to Modi on the occasion of India's Independence Day and referenced their recent phone call earlier this week. 'Our nations share the experience of standing up for freedom and dignity, as well as the pursuit of peace and development," Zelenskyy wrote. In the same message, the Ukrainian President expressed hope that India would step forward to play a role in ending the ongoing war. 'We hope that India will contribute to efforts aimed at ending the war, so that our freedom and sovereignty are truly secure," he added. Congratulations to the people of India, President @rashtrapatibhvn, and Prime Minister @narendramodi on the Independence Day!This week we had a good, candid conversation with Prime Minister @narendramodi when I had an opportunity to personally convey my best wishes on this… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) August 15, 2025 The message to India comes at a critical juncture, as President Putin sits down with Trump to explore possible solutions to the nearly four-year-long conflict. European leaders, along with Zelenskyy, remain wary of what concessions Trump might be willing to entertain. Earlier this week, Trump held a virtual meeting with Zelenskyy and several European heads of state, where he reiterated his support for Ukraine. According to two European diplomats who spoke to CNN, Trump told participants that he would advocate for an unconditional ceasefire during his discussions with Putin. The sources also noted that Trump stated the issue of Ukrainian territory was 'not for him to negotiate." Zelenskyy also held a separate call with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff ahead of the summit. While he sees the Trump-Putin meeting as a symbolic win for Putin, Zelenskyy remains cautiously hopeful. Trump has hinted that if today's talks in Alaska go well, a trilateral summit involving Ukraine could follow. view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 02:25 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Kerala govt's focus on welfare development and unity: Pinarayi
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday said state govt was committed to the goal of strengthening people's welfare and the state's development. In his Independence Day address, Vijayan said, "We are at a stage where we have undertaken the mission to transform Kerala into a knowledge-based innovative society. Kerala is being built on a knowledge-based economy to secure the future of our coming generations. We are moving forward by strengthening both people's welfare and state's development. On one hand, there is eradication of extreme poverty and on the other, building the future Kerala. This is also the occasion to pledge that all efforts will be made for these goals. We are advancing into a new era, achieving digital literacy and more. This is a comprehensive advancement that includes everyone." It's time to renew our commitment to make the country free of poverty, hunger deaths, child labour, illiteracy, caste bias, religious intolerance, lack of basics and unemployment, he added. "An India without poverty, starvation deaths, child labour, illiteracy, caste discrimination, religious hatred, denial of basic necessities and unemployment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Have we been able to make this dream a reality? The truth is, we have not. Therefore, during this Independence Day celebration, we must rededicate ourselves to making all these dreams come true," said Vijayan. "India's greatest achievement in the past decades is that, except for a brief period, we have been able to maintain democracy in the country. This is no small feat. We have seen neighbouring countries where democracy was overthrown and replaced by military rule. We have seen calls for theocracy gaining strength in some places. We have also seen democratic govts being replaced by puppet regimes under imperial control," he said. "No matter what shortcomings exist at any level, the framers of our Constitution have reflected in it the determination that democracy should not ultimately be destroyed. We must protect it," he added. "Even as external imperial threats rise against the sovereignty of the country, divisive threats that can fracture the unity of the people are emerging from within. Forces of communalism are intensifying efforts to fracture the 'idea of India' along caste and religious lines. We must be able to resist and defeat this with unity beyond all divisions. This is the occasion to take such a pledge," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
