Death of ex-Yankee Brett Gardner's son being investigated for carbon monoxide poisoning, officials say
Investigators detected high emissions of carbon monoxide contamination in the hotel room where Miller Gardner and his family were staying, OIJ director Randall Zuniga said during a video press conference, citing the results of testing last Friday.
The hotel room is next to a specialized machine room, which could have led to the contamination, Zuniga said.
'[That] leads us to a line of investigation in which it seems that this person may have died from inhaling these very dangerous gases,' Zuniga said in Spanish.
Miller's cause of death will not be verified until officials receive the final forensic toxicology results, according to officials. OIJ is working closely with the U.S., Zuniga said.
Costa Rican National Police previously ruled out asphyxiation as a cause of death after initially citing it as a possibility.
Miller died in his sleep on March 21 after he, among other family members, fell ill during the vacation, according to a statement by Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica.
'We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,' the family said in their statement.
Miller was the youngest of the Gardners' two sons.
The Yankees held a moment of silence for Miller on Opening Day, remembering him for 'a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.' He was a two-sport athlete who wore No. 11, like his father, on his football jersey.
Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge has paid tribute by using Brett Gardner's signature flex during the Bleacher Creatures' roll call.
'He may not have been the big superstar with all the All-Stars and MVPs and this and that, but this guy was a leader of all of us, a second dad to some guys,' Judge said of Brett Gardner, whom he played with for parts of six seasons.
'He poured everything into every single guy. If you were having a tough time, he was always there for you to be someone to lean on, someone to joke on. Yeah, his family, they've all been on my mind.'
Brett Gardner, 41, was drafted by the Yankees in 2005 and played each of his 14 MLB seasons from 2008-21 with the organization.
He ranks third in Yankees history in stolen bases (274), 13th in games played (1,688) and was part of the 2009 team that won the World Series.
'I've talked to our guys a lot about perspective, and while this matters so much to us — it's our livelihood, we pour so much into this [and] so many people care about it — it's baseball,' said manager Aaron Boone, who was there for Brett Gardner's last four seasons.
'I really think it's important that we reflect on that every now and then.'

Illegal migrant who killed Rachel Morin sat emotionless as family members remembered mom at sentencing
The Salvadorian illegal migrant who viciously raped and killed Rachel Morin was emotionless as her grieving children remembered their 'kind' and 'determined' mom at his sentencing Monday — where he was given life without the possibility of parole. Harford County Circuit Court Judge Yolanda Curtin threw the book at Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 24, after an hours-long hearing Monday where Morin's family members, including four of her five children, delivered emotional victim impact statements. Morin's eldest daughter described her mom, who has the 'best laugh,' as 'kind, strong, honest, determined and funny,' in a heartbreaking written statement she asked the prosecutor to read to the court, WBAL-TV reported. 'I had to relive the worst two days of my life in order to write this,' the statement from the 20-year-old read. Her three youngest children delivered their statements via audio recordings. 'She was a good mom,' her son could be heard saying in one recording. 'Every time I see a picture of her I think about the life I had with her and my four sisters. I miss her.' Morin's children range in age from 9 to 20. 3 The killer of Maryland mother-of-five Rachel Morin was sentenced Monday. Facebook/Rachel Morin 'You took a life that was not yours to take,' the judge told Martinez-Hernandez, according to WBAL-TV. 'Your acts not only brutalized a young woman but also terrorized a community. 'You are not a candidate for rehabilitation. There is simply no hope to rehabilitate you.' A jury found Martinez-Hernandez guilty in April of murdering Morin, 37, as she was exercising on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air, Maryland, on Aug. 5, 2023. He strangled her and then bashed her head against rocks before hiding her partially naked body in a drainage culvert on the trail that is about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore. Morin's younger brother, John Morin, said through tears Monday that he's experienced a 'tidal wave of grief' since his sister's slaying, according to a post on X by ABC 2 reporter Blair Sabol. Martinez-Hernandez remained stony-faced and emotionless as the family members told the judge about the toll that Morin's murder had taken on the family. After, through a Spanish translator, Martinez-Hernandez addressed the judge, thanking her 'for the opportunity to speak' but that he would 'not be giving any testimony.' Morin's mother, Patty Morin, told the court she has suffered nightmares, panic attacks, and insomnia since her daughter's death. 'The depths of grief are equivalent to the depths of love felt,' Patty said. 'This will impact generations to come.' Ahead of the sentencing, the heartbroken mom told Fox News' 'Fox & Friends' that she didn't know if she wanted to hear from her daughter's murderer at the sentencing, because she would never really know if an apology was simply a bid for a lighter penalty. 'To be honest, I don't know, because even if he spoke, would I believe what he said?' Patty said. 'If he said he was sorry, could I believe that he actually is or if he's just saying that to you know, to hope for a lesser sentence.' 3 Illegal immigrant Victor Martinez-Hernandez was convicted in April of the brutal rape and killing of Morin. Tulsa Police Department The killer wasn't captured until nearly a year later in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in June 2024, after investigators were able to match the DNA taken from his sock to the DNA found at the crime scene. He was convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and kidnapping and faced up to life in prison. He didn't face the death penalty as the Free State doesn't allow capitol punishment. Martinez-Hernandez entered the country illegally after allegedly slaying another woman in his home country of El Salvador. 3 Martinez-Hernandez was an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. X/BarrySimmsWBAL Morin's killing gained national notoriety as an example of former President Joe Biden's dangerous border policies. Patty was outspoken against Biden for his policies, which she blamed for the fact that Martinez-Hernandez was able to get into the country and kill her daughter. The murder of Laken Riley also made headlines as Jose Ibarra, a Tren de Aragua gang member, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for slaying the promising 22-year-old nursing student on Feb. 22, 2024, in Georgia.

New York man fatally shot while in Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny concert remembered as inspiration
A New York man who was fatally shot in Puerto Rico's La Perla neighborhood in San Juan on Sunday is being remembered by his loved ones as a beloved son, friend and inspiration to all who knew him. Kevin Mares, 25, was visiting the island with friends to attend a Bad Bunny concert. On Sunday, Mares was out when a few people began to fight across the street, his father, Hector Mares, told NBC New York. "Somebody got a gun and start shooting, and unfortunately they hit my son in the abdomen," Hector Mares said. Mares was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of the shooting, according to Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mares' death has left his family completely devastated and in shock. "My son, everybody loves him, everybody," Hector Mares told NBC New York. "He was doing good at school, he was working. When he came home from work, he started taking care of his, his pets, and he loves cooking." The last time he saw his son was right before he left for Puerto Rico. "We say, 'Goodbye, take care, see you soon, we're gonna miss you,'" Hector Mares said. "We never, never expect that was going to be the last time we see him." Mares' mother, Sandra Mares, was in disbelief when she was told of her son's passing. "We couldn't believe it," she told NBC New York in Spanish. "We thought it was a joke." Sandra recalled spending weekends with her son, when the family would get together to grill hamburgers and hotdogs, or sing karaoke. Now, all Mares' parents want is for their son's body to be brought back to New York. They started a GoFundMe to help them with body transfer and funerary expenses. The family remembered Mares as "a deeply loved son, devoted friend, and a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him," who had a bright future ahead of him. "His wholehearted kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering commitment to family made him a pillar of strength for his loved ones," his family said on the GoFundMe page. Mares was planning to propose to his girlfriend of six years this fall, according to his family. "Family was at the center of everything he did, and his sudden passing has left an unfillable void in our lives," the family said. The investigation into the shooting that killed Mares is ongoing.
