Samsung to unveil its seventh generation foldable phones tonight: What to expect

The Hindu09-07-2025
Samsung will reveal its seventh generation of foldable phones on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) in a global unveiling during the Galaxy Unpacked July 2025 event. The South Korean electronics major bets big on generative AI, Galaxy AI, to make these multitasking phones more productive.
Samsung is expected to launch three foldable phones: Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ultra (probably a new addition to the family), along with Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.
The new Galaxy foldable and flip phones are most likely to feature an overrun version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor with up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. Samsung will also stress the One UI 8 these phones are likely to run post-launch, based on Android 16.
A 200 MP main camera is also expected in the series to mimic the camera prowess of its Ultra series. The telephoto lens is likely to remain unchanged too. Samsung is not expected to go big on the selfie camera in these phones. However, the inner front lens could see some improvements.
Samsung, being a miser on the battery front, is expected to pack up to 5,000 mAh of battery capacity in the Fold 7, and a 4,700 mAh battery capacity in Flip 7. The charger will not be included in the box, as always. We are not sure about the 'Ultra' or the 'FE' variant battery capacity since it will be a new addition.
Galaxy Z Fold 7 could get a 7.9-inch display while upfront, it may get a 6.5-inch panel. The Flip 7 is least likely to get any display changes.
Samsung could also launch the Galaxy 8 series smartwatches along with the foldable phones. It might come in two variants of base and classic.
Samsung Galaxy Unpacked July 2025 will stream from 7:30 PM IST.
Samsung foldable phones will be among the super premium foldable phones this year and they will compete with the likes of Vivo's foldable, Motorola's flip and Google's later bending devices.

But did you ever hear of a truckload full of the latest Android flagships being stolen? Well, you have now. In a report by Yonhap News TV, Samsung suffered a massive Heathrow Airport theft in which approximately 12,000 units of Galaxy devices were stolen. These Galaxy devices include the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 range. The report by Yonhap News, published on April 13, says that the consignment was moved to a warehouse near the airport after being loaded onto the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 truck, after which it was stolen. The products that were stolen were all brand new, including 5,000 Z Fold 7 units, 5,000 Z Flip 7, and 5,000 Galaxy Watch 8 units. The rest were units from the Galaxy S25 range and Samsung Galaxy A16. It is said that the stolen goods, which seem to be in a heist taken out of a Hollywood movie, were worth approximately €9 million or a whopping ₹91 crore. Not The First Major Mobile Theft Incident Notably, this is not the first time that a major mobile handset theft has taken place. The stolen items were worth more than $3,30,000. On the other hand, in a TOI report, about 2,549 Samsung mobile phones were stolen in 2024, and the gang was later arrested. Turning trash into energy

His father has helmed an aluminum die-casting MSME serving the automobiles and telecommunications sector for 25 years. When Guru took up management, he opted for forward-integration by making aluminium alloys. That's when he noticed the large volume of electronic waste being collected even by a metal recycling company. "This was a niche market which many people did not focus on. So we ventured into refining critical materials from electronic waste," he says. Starting with battery recycling , Boson is focused on building lithium-ion cells for drones, EVs and energy storage applications (ESS). It grinds, separates and purifies critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite and converts them into battery grade chemicals. Having studied mechatronics and conducted projects in electrochemistry in college helped. "We started these research projects in 2019 to develop refining technologies. Initially, we sold cathode and anode materials, then we focussed on battery cells, as each cell maker has unique needs, and there were limited opportunities," he said. The tech is well understood, but it is hard to execute and is also capital intensive, he adds. The startup has developed proprietary technology for refining and processing these materials, which make up around 35% weight of the battery cell. The trading of these materials drew intense scrutiny in the aftermath of recent geopolitical shifts, including China's export controls on battery and refining technologies that took effect in January. Currently India imports more than 80% of its cells and it predominantly comes from China. Boson Cell has built a facility for recovering critical minerals through a process known as black mass generation at Sriperumbudur, with an initial capacity of 0.8 gigawatt hours. "Currently, this serves up to 30% of our inputs, enabling us to focus on the primary business of building cells, but we plan to expand this capacity in the future," Guru Punghavan says. He also worked with South Korean companies to establish manufacturing lines, SoPs and clean rooms for cell manufacturing. Boson Cell has developed two cells for drones with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry and is in the process of building four more cells and exploring different cell chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP). "There are discussions around curbs on rare earth material exports from China. While it does not affect us now, it has highlighted the risks in the battery supply chain. Recycling of e-waste and refining capabilities for lithium, cobalt and nickel are in nascent stage in India and it affects our cell production," he says. The company has raised $1.5 million from friends and family and plans to raise more capital for expanding its production capacity, specifically targeting EV cells. The startup has partnered with drone OEMs and is in talks with electric two and three wheeler OEMs for pilot projects. It is also expecting financial support from the Centre under the Fame II programme. Guru Punghavan believes the govt's targeted support for smaller battery cell manufactures could boost the ecosystem. The startup aims to build a one lakh cell a day production line by the next fiscal and it hopes to source 100% of its materials for the cells from inhouse recycling. The startup is betting on providing faster turnaround times and lower minimum order quantities to gain market share.
