Former Liverpool duo who are cousins have become professionals in hugely popular sport
Liverpool fans were left gobsmacked last week when a video went viral, showing former player Florent Sinama Pongolle pulling off an impressive shot in professional footgolf. And it seems he's not the only ex-Reds ace who is using his football skills in a completely different sport.
Sinama Pongolle scored nine goals in 65 appearances for Liverpool after being signed from France in 2003, along with his highly-rated cousin Anthony La Tallec, by then-Reds' manager Gerard Houllier.
Now aged 40, the striker bagged a Champions League medal in 2005 when Rafa Benitez masterminded a legendary comeback to beat AC Milan despite being 3-0 down at half-time.
Although he missed the final due to injury, he did score Liverpool's first goal in the memorable 3-1 victory over Olympiacos, in the group stage, that set the Reds on their path to Istanbul.
Sinama Pongolle went on to play for clubs including Atletico Madrid and Saint-Etienne, and even in Scotland, before a brief spell in Thailand towards the end of his career. He has also featured in charity games for the Reds.
The ex-French international, who earned one cap, hung up his boots in 2019 and quickly laced them up again as he ventured into the world of professional footgolf, reports The Express.
Last week, a clip surfaced on Sinama Pongolle's Instagram story showing him sinking an incredible shot from beyond the green at Golf De Saint Donat on the French Riviera.
Sinama Pongolle isn't the only former Liverpool star to have embraced the sport, as he revealed that Le Tallec has also taken up the game. "There are many [footballers] who come to try it," Sinama Pongolle said to L'Union.
"After me, there is Ludovic Obraniak, who has practiced a lot, and Camel Meriem, who is the one who has been practicing the most since he started.
"We also find Anthony Le Tallec who I got started. There were other ambassadors like Sylvain Wiltord, Jean-Pierre Papin or Youri Djorkaeff, who have already been part of the thing."
Sinama Pongolle and Le Tallec, who have been close mates since their youth days, have reunited once more at HAC Footgolf. The Le Havre club is where both players developed their talents in the celebrated academy that launched them towards professional football.
Despite spending that campaign out on loan, Le Tallec still earned a Champions League winner's medal from Liverpool's memorable victory in Istanbul.
The French striker departed Anfield in 2008 after a six-year spell and concluded his playing days with spells in Romania, Greece, and eventually back in France.

Alexander Isak told to report for Newcastle training after squad have gone
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was told to report for training on Wednesday after the rest of the squad had left as uncertainty over his future continues. The 25-year-old Sweden international did not travel with his team-mates on their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, ostensibly because of a minor thigh injury, after Liverpool, who subsequently tabled a £110million bid for him, let it be known they remained interested in acquiring his services. Isak, who later informed the club he wanted to explore his options this summer, instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad and returned to Tyneside at the weekend, shortly before head coach Eddie Howe and his squad landed back from Seoul and were given two days off. The players were back at the training ground on Wednesday morning and their families were invited to join them after training. However, the PA news agency understands Isak, who reported back to the club's Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they had left and was pictured arriving at around 1550. The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. However questioned about his absence in South Korea, Howe signalled that his actions might have repercussions. The 47-year-old told reporters: 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Isak is understood to have undergone treatment and light training at a deserted training ground on Monday and it remains to be seen whether he will have any involvement in the club's pre-season fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend. The striker faces clear-the-air talks with Howe, with his situation becoming seemingly more complicated by the day as a difficult transfer window threatens to spiral further out of control. Newcastle tabled an improved club record bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Monday in an effort to beat Manchester United to the punch, but developments since suggest the 22-year-old is more likely to head for Old Trafford than St James' Park. That would represent the latest blow in a transfer window which has already seen the Magpies miss out on major targets Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Liam Delap. They have managed to recruit Nottingham Forest wide man Anthony Elanga and, on loan, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but with frontman Callum Wilson and midfielder Sean Longstaff having left, there is significant work to be done, with the start of the new season just 10 days away. Howe was already looking for a striker before the Isak situation came to a head and, with three years remaining on the Swede's current deal – he has so far resisted the club's overtures to sign a new contract – there seems to be little prospect of the club allowing him to leave either before they have secured a replacement or for much less than their £150m valuation, having already rebuffed Liverpool's initial approach. Meanwhile, sources on Tyneside have played down suggestions that Newcastle have tabled a bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, but it is understood they are maintaining an interest in the Germany international.

Arsenal and Man Utd should have 'taken a chance' on £46m Liverpool star
Arsenal and Manchester United have been told they missed a trick by not considering a move for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez this summer. Signing a striker has been a priority for a host of Premier League clubs this summer, including Arsenal and United. After injuries forced Arsenal to deploy Mikel Merino as a makeshift striker last season, the Gunners were keen to bring in a natural striker, eventually settling on Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal had also given heavy consideration to signing Benjamin Sesko, but the RB Leipzig striker now looks poised to join United after spurning a similar offer from Newcastle United. However, former Premier League striker Dean Saunders reckons both clubs should have looked closer to home and namechecked Nunez as a player who they both should have tried to sign. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. The Uruguayan looks set to leave Liverpool this summer to join Al-Hilal for an initial £46m fee after the Reds brought in Hugo Ekitike earlier in the window. But Saunders believes the 26-year-old could well have been worth a gamble for other clubs despite finishing last season with just five league goals. 'Nunez, he's up for grabs. Would you rather not have Nunez than Sesko and Gyokeres?' Saunders told talkSPORT. 'They paid a lot of money for them, and I thought, 'he's up for grabs.' I would take a chance on him. Saunders added: 'He's got every finish in his locker, both feet, headers, he's gone round the keeper, he's slotted the keeper, he's chipped the keeper, he's scored from distance. 'We've seen him do every finish, but somehow he manages to conjure up a miss – I don't know how many times he hit the post and the crossbar last season. 'There's definitely a player in there, you look at him and think, 'what a handful he is to play against.' More Trending 'He scored a lot of goals for Benfica in his second season and a couple of seasons ago he got 20-odd for Liverpool. 'I wouldn't be surprised if Nunez goes somewhere else and scores 20 goals next season.' Nunez's departure to Saudi Arabia could well clear the way for Liverpool to renew their interest in Alexander Isak, who has indicated he wants to leave Newcastle this summer. The Reds saw an initial offer of £110m swiftly rejected by Newcastle, who may demand as much as £150m for the Swedish international. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Alexander Isak not invited to Newcastle players' family barbecue
Alexander Isak's standoff with Newcastle hit crisis point after he was ordered to train separately by Eddie Howe and not included in a player-family bonding day with the rest of the squad. Howe had organised a barbecue with players and their families after the first day back at training, following a pre-season tour in Asia. However, Isak, who has told the club he wants to explore a move away from St James' Park, was told to come into the training after the event in order to be treated for a minor thigh injury. It came just days after Howe publicly insisted Isak needed to 'earn the right' to train with the rest of the squad after missing pre-season matches amid uncertainty over his future and a rejected £110m bid from Liverpool. The Newcastle manager has get-togethers with players' loved ones at the club's training ground throughout the season. This is to include families and help the squad bond. It appears Howe is standing firm over the 25-year-old's conduct during pre-season. On conclusion of matches in Singapore and South Korea, Howe insisted: 'No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal. You have to earn the right.' Howe had sent Isak home from Newcastle's pre-season opener at Celtic after the intense scrutiny over his future and interest from Liverpool. It then emerged that the Sweden international informed the club of his desire to move away from Newcastle this summer, despite having three years left on his current deal at St James' Park. With the club citing a minor thigh injury, he did not travel to Asia but instead flew to Spain where he underwent personal training sessions at his old club Real Sociedad. Howe revealed he heard about the trip to Spain through the media rather than from the player himself. Newcastle's valuation of Isak is £150m and they will stick rigidly to their price. Liverpool, meanwhile, have moved closer to selling Darwin Núñez to Al Hilal in a deal worth £46m plus add-ons.
