‘The Monk is sophisticated enough, he likes his Eggs Benedict' – ‘Crime World' host Nicola Tallant on Gerry Hutch's eating habits
The broadcaster, who is this week's guest on the Under the Grill podcast, said: 'There was no coddle or any of this sort of stuff, even though you think he's such a traditional Dub, don't you?
'I'd say he has better taste than you and I. He's floating around the Mediterranean and he has probably eaten very nicely. He ordered a haloumi burger, and I, embarrassingly, had chicken wings. What an amateur I am.
'He is sophisticated enough – he like his Eggs Benedict.
'I did meet him in town over the course of the general election and he had an old-fashioned Irish breakfast at lunchtime.'
Hutch walked free from the Special Criminal Court in 2023 after the State unsuccessfully sought to prosecute him for his involvement in a gun attack at the Regency Hotel in 2016.
He is currently under investigation by authorities in Spain for alleged money laundering.
He narrowly missed out on securing a Dáil seat in last year's general election.
Ms Tallant said: 'He is quite distinguished looking: he's unusual looking and he had kind of shaved his beard, and he has those sharky eyes.
'The day he came out of prison, he had the full beard and looked like something from Castaway.

'It just added to the whole drama of everything when he walked free that day. He has differing styles and I don't think he has worn the beard since then. But he's an interesting character.
'The Monk interview was a mega success with our listeners. There are comedy sketches about him now.
'His voice is so funny. He shocks you in a funny way when he speaks. He does have a star quality: for a criminal, he does have some charisma.
'The Monk interview is the biggest that was ever broadcast in Ireland. If you look at the figures properly, they're up there with the Joe Rogan [podcast].
'It's off the scale. On YouTube alone, before we hit the audio figures, there's about 1.4 million. You can double that for listeners.'
Ms Tallant joined Kevin Dundon and Caoimhe Young in the Under the Grill kitchen to chat about her dad's roast chicken dinner.

George Gibney to appear in US court over his potential extradition
Former Irish Olympic swimming coach George Gibney, who was arrested in the US on Tuesday, will appear before a US court on July 11 to either fight or accede to extradition to Ireland. Mr Gibney, who is now in his 70s, is facing a total of 79 charges relating to historical sex abuse allegations. Of these, 78 are for indecent assault while one is for attempted rape, court documents filed at the District Court of Orlando, Florida, have shown. These charges relate to allegations made by four girls. They were all aged between eight and 15 at the time and were being coached by Gibney at the time of the alleged abuse. The allegations regarding Gibney were highlighted in a BBC podcast which was released over five years ago. The Garda National Protective Services Bureau has been working on a case following the release of the podcast. After compiling a file, the DPP recommended that he be charged with over 50 historical sexual abuse offences. The Taoiseach told reporters in Japan, according to RTÉ: 'I think we all listened to the podcast. I think it's important that we have an agreement with the US. Gardaí have been working very diligently and in a detailed way, I have no doubt. We will await the next step now.' Pic: Leah Farrell/ Mr Gibney served as an Olympic swimming coach in Dublin during the 1980s and 1990s, but he stepped back from the sport following a host of allegations of sexual abuse levelled against him by both male and female swimmers. He had previously appeared before Dún Laoghaire District Court in April 1993, charged with 27 counts of indecency against young swimmers. He was also charged with 'having carnal knowledge' of girls under the age of 15. He managed to stop the prosecution by taking a judicial review, where his legal team argued there was a delay in the offences coming to court. BBC Sounds and Second Captains produced the podcast series entitled Where is George Gibney?, in which many of Mr Gibney's alleged victims came forward to deliver harrowing testimonies about their experiences. This included 18 new people who had never spoken publicly about the alleged abuse before. 'What was striking was that no men had come forward,' creator of the podcast, Mark Horgan, said. 'There is still a stigma about men who were involved in historic sex abuse cases coming forward. 'We know George Gibney abused boys. I think it's positive for men to know that they'll be believed in Ireland and they're going to be heard too.' Mr Horgan also said that the goal of the podcast was not to get another trial or the extradition of Mr Gibney, who left the country following a failed prosecution in the Nineties. 'The aim was never to get another trial for extradition, the aim was to get the story told to as many people as possible,' he said. 'Perpetrators of abuse want these stories to remain in the dark and for parents not to be aware, and for survivors to stay silent. 'So when we started it was just to get as many people as possible to learn about the stories of George Gibney and for survivors to have their voices heard,' he told RTÉ.

EU Commission President Von der Leyen faces no-confidence vote next week
THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION under President Ursula von der Leyen is set to face a European Parliament no-confidence vote next week. MEPs will meet in Strasbourg, France on Monday to debate the motion for censure and a confidence vote will take place later on Thursday, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola told parliamentary group leaders last night, who will debate whether to put the motion on the draft agenda ahead of next week's plenary session. The motion, launched by the right-wing MEP Gheorghe Pipera of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) parliamentary grouping , is mostly symbolic. Advertisement While European parties are set to oppose the motion, it highlights a growing tension between politicians in the EU. ECR distanced itself from Pipera's motion yesterday, claiming that it was not proposed by the group. Every European Commissioner, including Ireland's Michael McGrath and President von der Leyen, would have to resign if the vote is successful. However, the majority of most groupings are set to support the Commission. Pipea brought forward the motion following a recently annulled European Commission decision that denied a journalist access to text messages between von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the Covid-19 pandemic . It has been alleged that texts between the pair were key to securing vaccines during the pandemic. The European Union's General Court sided with The New York Time's case in May, annulling the Commission's decision to deny access to the messages. Irish MEPs in July last year largely opposed a second von der Leyen term over her stance on Israel's war in Gaza, among other issues .
