Pat Cummins in sad admission after brutal fallout with Travis Head in IPL

Yahoo03-05-2025

Pat Cummins has taken the blame after his side's latest defeat in the Indian Premier League that leaves them on the verge of elimination from the T20 competition. The Aussie Test captain and compatriot Travis Head were unable to stop the Gujarat Titans from wrapping up a comprehensive 38-run win that leaves their playoff hopes with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all but over.
In a staggering admission after a match played in front of 90,000 at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, Cummins said his bowling and fielding was not up to scratch after winning the toss and sending Gujarat in to bat. Cummins was belted for 40 off his four overs and put down a difficult catch in the outfield as Shubman Gill (76) and Jos Buttler (64) powered the Titans to an imposing 6-224. The Sunrisers could only manage 6-186 in reply to leave their season on life support.
The loss meant Cummins' men have only won three of their 10 matches and will now have to rely on other results to go their way in order to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. The Aussie skipper said it was "unfortunate" that Sunrisers' fate was out of their hands and tried to put on a brave face about their prospects after the match. But the fast bowler scolded himself when asked what went wrong after the game.
"Our powerplay with the ball wasn't too great, and I'm probably as guilty as anyone there," Cummins said after going for 10-runs an over and taking just the one wicket. "(I) probably let them get 20 or 30 extra just with some bad balls.
"And maybe we should have hung on to one or two catches throughout the middle - again, I'm guilty there," he added, referring to a difficult catch to remove Buttler. The Englishman was on 22 at the time and skied a ball to cover off the bowling of Harshal Patel but Cummins was unable to take the chance.
England's former white-ball captain went on to thrash 64 off 37 deliveries, before Cummins finally got Buttler out mis-hitting to long-on for his one wicket of the match. But with Titans captain Gill also in brutal form with the bat and Sai Sudharsan kicking off the innings with 48 off 23, the reprieve helped Gujarat set up a match-winning total. "Chasing 200 would have looked a bit more realistic," Cummins lamented afterwards.
Cummins' Aussie teammate Head was going along nicely in SRH's chase and as long as he remained at the crease, the Sunrisers' hopes of hauling in the victory target were alive. But after racing to 20 off 16 balls, Head was caught in the deep after an incredible piece of fielding from Rashid Khan.
The Afghan spin sensation had to cover serious ground to get to Head's attempted six before diving at full stretch near the boundary rope to take a superb two-handed catch. Head's look of disbelief showed just how good the piece of of fielding from Khan was and despite a 74 from the Aussie's opening partner Abhishek Sharma, the SRH chase never really got going.
Sharma tried his best but with but with batting partners falling around him, the game was all but over when Cummins finished up with a six and a four in his 10-ball cameo of 19. With Hyderabad's chances now on life support, Cummins was still trying to remain positive. "It was obviously a big auction last year, so the core of this group's going to be together for three years, hopefully, so there's still lots to play for," he said.

'Pretty hard': Pat Cummins floats major change to WTC final as Aussies eye history

Pat Cummins isn't only out to make history as the first captain to win two World Test Championships - he's hoping to use victory as a bargaining chip to bring the concept to Australia. The Aussies go into this week's final against South Africa as hot favourites, seeking to defend the title they won against India at The Oval two years ago. It's the first time the WTC has been held at Lord's and no decision has been made on where the 2027 edition will be staged. World cricket's cramped and complicated scheduling – up against myriad competing forces – and the vagaries of the WTC qualification process limits venue and timeslot flexibility. It's why England in June has been chosen for all three finals to date. Cummins understands the logistical challenges but would like to explore the opportunity of the defending champion or top-ranked team hosting the decider in the future. "I don't mind having it here (at Lord's). If you have to have it in one venue, this is the perfect venue to have it every time," he told Yahoo Sport Australia. "If not – and I know, logistically, it's probably pretty hard to move around - maybe the previous winner or top team gets to host the next one. "It's pretty tricky nowadays trying to find a two-week gap in everyone's calendar, but if we don't have it here (at Lord's) then we can look at the previous winner's home or top team." The ICC is unlikely to tamper with the competition, preferring to start each cycle fresh and afford two countries the chance to compete in the final. But the governing body may consider moving the final in 2027, with the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) already signalling its intention to bid for the match. India (twice), Australia (twice), South Africa and New Zealand are the four nations to have qualified for a final in the WTC's short history, with England hosting all three deciders. On the eve of this year's final, Usman Khawaja spoke of his love for Lord's ahead of what is likely to be his last match on England soil. The veteran open doesn't expect any lingering hostility from the infamous 2023 Ashes Test, which turned ugly after Alex Carey's contentious stumping of Jonny Bairstow. He said: "We've always had pretty good support here. "Either way, whether we get booed or cheered we're going out there to do a job of trying to win the World Test Championship. It'd be nice to lift up that mace at the end of the day three, four or five." The ICC World Test Championship final (June 11-15) is on Prime Video and available to all members in Australia at no additional cost to their membership. Coverage starts 7.30pm (AEST). (AP Photo/Ajit Solanki) ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (AP) — Nicholas Pooran, West Indies' Twenty20 record-holder for runs and appearances, retired from international cricket on Monday. Pooran, 29, made the announcement on Instagram. Advertisement "Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me,' he wrote. 'To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.' Pooran was suspended briefly in late 2019 after admitting to ball-tampering against Afghanistan, and overcame that to be named West Indies T20 vice captain about 18 months later for a tour by Australia. But he became captain when Kieron Pollard couldn't play, and led the team to a 4-1 series win. In 2022, he was named the permanent white-ball captain and took the team to that year's T20 World Cup in Australia, but in fallout from a first-round elimination he resigned. He starred when the West Indies hosted the T20 World Cup last year, overtaking Chris Gayle as the team's all-time leading scorer, and hitting his highest T20 score, 98 against Afghanistan. Advertisement Pooran played 106 T20s for 2,275 runs at an average of 26.14. He also played 61 one-day internationals, including three centuries and one World Cup. Cricket West Indies praised Pooran as a game-changer, and with 'sincere gratitude and appreciation ... for his outstanding contributions. His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket." ___ AP cricket:

Vikings Trade Idea Sees J.J. McCarthy Joined by Titans' Will Levis

Vikings Trade Idea Sees J.J. McCarthy Joined by Titans' Will Levis originally appeared on Athlon Sports. This season, the Minnesota Vikings venture into the quarterback unknown. According to data gathered from The Football Database, the average number of career starts rostered per team for the upcoming season is 120 -- bolstered by either a proven starter or a veteran backup supporting a rookie-scale QB on each team. Advertisement The Vikings have neither. With just 22 career starts between all four of their quarterbacks, the Vikings have the second-fewest quarterback starts in the NFL, ahead of only the New Orleans Saints. It's J.J. McCarthy or bust for Minnesota this year after the Vikings watched Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones and Nick Mullens depart in free agency. They declined to sign a veteran quarterback in free agency, instead opting to trade for Sam Howell, whose 5-13 record as a starter is far from encouraging. That has led to some outside consultation suggesting that Minnesota should be in the market to improve the quarterback room before the start of the season. Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy© Brad Rempel-Imagn Images One trade idea floated by Anne Erickson considered the possibility of the Vikings landing 2023 second-round pick Will Levis. Advertisement While Levis has his blemishes, he has more physical talent than Howell, Brett Rypien or rookie Max Brosmer, prompting Erickson to suggest a Day 2 or Day 3 pick could be enough to pry Levis away from the Tennessee Titans. "The Tennessee Titans made a big move and drafted quarterback Cam Ward No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, which says a lot," Erickson wrote. "Will Levis isn't happy about it. So, the Tennessee Titans could trade Levis for a late Day 2 or early Day 3 draft selection." While landing Levis for that price could be a stretch, the Titans may be ready to rid themselves of Levis after they fired the man who drafted him, former general manager Ran Carthon. Considering the three first-round picks the San Francisco 49ers invested to get Trey Lance, only to trade him to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-rounder, it isn't preposterous to consider the Titans offloading Levis for a similar recoup of draft stock. Advertisement Levis is 5-16 as a starter for a struggling Titans organization and could merely need some quarterback rehab from Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell. While the same argument can be made for Howell, Levis has better physical tools that could offer more upside behind McCarthy. Howell could even be considered for a quarterback swap if both teams deem their prospects need a change of scenery.
