
'Jacks of all trades' syndicate celebrate life-changing EuroMillions win
A Lotto syndicate made up of a crew of tradesmen have hammered home their biggest job yet after bagging a life-changing six-figure sum in a recent EuroMillions draw.
The 11-strong crew of tradesmen travelled from corners of the east of the country to Lotto HQ in Dublin on Wednesday to collect their €255,000 prize, which they won in the special EuroMillions Ireland Only Raffle being run throughout the month of May.
The syndicate, made up of builders, plumbers, electricians, and engineers, were one of 10 winners of the Ireland Only Raffle in the EuroMillions draw on May 27. And while that prize is usually worth €5,000, the National Lottery added an additional prize of €250,000 for one winner of the Ireland-Only Raffle for all nine EuroMillions draws during the month of May.
The group's winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased by head of the syndicate, Richard O'Brien, at Applegreen, on Newfoundwell Road in Greenbatter, Drogheda, Co Louth, on the day of the draw. That ticket held the all-important raffle number: I-SDL-14299.
The syndicate has been playing together for five years and the group has stuck to a simple system: one group chat, one EuroMillions ticket each, three lines with the Plus, and everyone keeping an eye on every ticket.
Shortly after the draw on May 27, one eagle-eyed member beat Richard to checking the tickets and sent a simple message to the group saying: "This is a winner!"
Richard initially thought they'd bagged a modest €5,000. "Then one of the lads said, 'Check again, we've won a lot more than that. There's a special raffle on.' I thought he was pulling my leg… until I looked it up. That's when I saw we'd won an extra €250,000!" said Richard.
"The phone was hopping with calls and texts for the rest of the night. It was madness but great excitement!" he added.
The next morning, Richard contacted the National Lottery Claims team to confirm the win. That evening, the group met up to sign the back of the winning ticket and celebrated their win together.
Since then, the 11-strong crew have been happily debating how to spend their handsome windfall. One of the syndicate members plans on buying a new couch for his partner, another is helping a family member save for a house, and the group chat is now full of holiday plans and chatter on sun destination.

Setting up your bank account before you arrive in Ireland
On The Money doesn't tend to take too much notice of press releases from banks but something crossed my desk this week that made me stop. It wasn't revolutionary – this is from an Irish bank after all – it was just announcing a simple practical solution to a problem that hasproved intractable. Every year tens of thousands of people arrive in Ireland to study, start a job or return home after an extended period abroad. Getting set up in a new country or back in your homeland throws up all sorts of basic practical issues; housing, setting up utilities, getting paid by your new employer or finding a home for the cash to tide you over for your period of study, almost all of which require you to have details of an account with a local bank. READ MORE Until now, unless you were physically resident in Ireland, you could not set up a current account to manage these basic but necessary functions, never mind about doing it online. Now Bank of Ireland says it is allowing people open accounts in Ireland up to 45 days before they arrive in the State. This allows them to have their financial affairs in order from the day they arrive in the State. I had to check that this was, in fact, new. It seems odd that in 2025 in a world where online banks are eating the lunch of the old traditional players, no one would have thought of this before now. The 'Coming to Ireland' service will even allocate a personal case manager who will get in touch within 48-hours of the application being submitted to guide people through the process. That will be subject of envy from every other bank customer who cannot be sure of ever dealing with the same person twice on their banking affairs. Bank of Ireland's head of retail, Susan Russell, notes that coming to Ireland for the first time or returning home after years abroad 'can be overwhelming'. And it's an experience that affects more people than you might think. Bank of Ireland cites Central Statistics Office figures showing that more than 149,000 people moved to Ireland in the 12 months up to the end of April 2024. Ms Russell says the new service is 'designed to remove barriers', something that will certainly be very welcome. So how does it work? You simply need to follows the steps in an online account application form which you can find here . You'll need photo ID – a passport, driving licence or EU national identity card. You'll also need two proofs of address but, as these will need to be proof of an Irish address, the bank gives you 60 days from your date of arrival to present those. Failure to do so will see the account blocked. The process will also require a selfie of you that is taken as you go through the process. Assuming it works as promised, it will give Bank of Ireland an edge on its rivals. AIB does say that people coming to the State can open an account before they arrive through its website. However, applicants still need to visit a branch on arrival to verify their identity and have the account activated. Once they have all the paperwork, AIB says a customer can expect their new account to be operational within 24 hours. People resident in Ireland over the age of 16 can open an account virtually through the AIB Mobile app, the bank tells me, which is welcome but no good if you're only arriving in the State. AIB is also proud of its translation services which offers service to customers in any one of 150 languages – which sounds helpful for those who do not speak English as a first language – but it still won't allow you to get up and running without trekking into a branch in Ireland. For its part, PTSB requires anyone arriving in Ireland and looking to open an account to present themselves at a branch with all the necessary documentation. People who are already resident here can open an account through PTSB's mobile app. They can even open a joint account if they were not already PTSB customers. However, somewhat ironically, if you are a PTSB customer and wish to open a joint account, you'll have to visit a branch Of course, while all this increased flexibility is welcome, it is worth noting that the banks are only really beginning to make themselves more accommodating because of the threat from the fintechs – like Revolut , N26 and Bunq – who pioneered the concept of online account opening, including scanning of the necessary documents. In a world where banks are making it ever more difficult to actually talk to someone in a branch, people, especially younger potential customers more comfortable with living more of their lives online, increasingly opt for the flexibility and user-friendliness the fintechs offers – despite some of the customer service glitches that have subsequently emerged. Ironically, in a world where traditional banks are looking to reduce branches and branch staff numbers, you would have thought blatant self-interest, if nothing else, would have made them anxious to be at the forefront of flexible, online banking As anyone who regularly battles their way through the stodgy online offerings available from the traditional banks will know, they're far short of offering that sort of cutting edge banking service. Still, at least making it easier for people to get their personal banking arrangements up and running before they land is a small step in the right direction. The Poetry Award was judged by Kathleen McCracken and Dawn Watson. * 'Men must endure / Their going hence, even as their coming hither' – King Lear. Have we no more active rights over life, birth and death? The attitude of passive acceptance of birth and death, preached by Edgar to his father in King Lear, has been variously challenged in the modern period. The nature of human rights in the matter have been hotly contested: the right to life of the unborn child as against women's reproductive rights, the principle of the sanctity of all human life clashing with the right to a chosen, dignified death. The title for this year's Hubert Butler Essay Prize invites reflection on the ethical questions raised by such debates. First prize is €1,500. The closing date is July 4th. * The Irish Writers Centre is packing its literary bags once more, embarking on a nationwide roadshow that will see it travel to five festivals across the island in 2025 – from Belfast to Bantry, Wexford to Waterford, before returning to Dublin in November for the Dublin Book Festival. Fresh from appearances at Galway's Cúirt and the University of Limerick's Creative Writing Festival, the Centre continues its mission to support writers of all backgrounds and at all stages of their careers. Events will include masterclasses, writing seminars, panel discussions, spoken word showcases and zine workshops. In Belfast, the Centre will showcase its Young Writer Delegates and host an information session featuring Novel Fair winner Andrew Cunning. West Cork welcomes seminars, spoken word, and panels on diversity and queer literature. Wexford offers conversations with John Banville and Victoria Kennefick, while Waterford sees a Writers in the Regions masterclass from Danielle McLoughlin. This prestigious accolade, funded by Bukhman Philanthropies, celebrates Evaristo's body of work, her transformative impact on literature and her unwavering dedication to uplifting underrepresented voices across the cultural landscape. As the recipient of the Women's Prize Outstanding Contribution Award, Evaristo will receive £100,000 prize money and a special sculpture named 'Thoughtful' by Caroline Russell MRSS, both of which will be presented on June 12th at the Women's Prize Trust's summer party in London, alongside the winners of the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction and the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction. * Sandycove is to publish Miriam O'Callaghan's memoir, Miriam: Life, Work, Everything, on October 30th. She has presented RTÉ's Prime Time since 1996. O'Callaghan said: 'It's 20 years since Sandycove first sent me a contract – let's just say, it's taken a while! I thank them for their patience, persistence and belief in my story. I have always lived my life in fast forward, so I never thought I would have the time to look back and reflect. I also wondered if anyone would be interested. Then one day not that long ago – with a prompt from Patricia Deevy – I decided I would write it, because if I didn't write it now, I might never do so. 'At first I thought it would just be about my work as a journalist, but then when I began writing I realised how impossible it was to separate my professional and personal lives. I don't know if that's because I'm a woman or a mother or both or none of those things, but I just knew that for my story to be authentic and truthful, I couldn't simply focus on the work side of my life.' * The Irish Writers Centre launches the first in a new series of Writers Showcase events spotlighting newly published writers from across the island. The inaugural showcase, titled The Out of Towners, takes place on Wednesday, June 18th, at 6.30pm at the centre, 19 Parnell Square North, Dublin 1. Curated to celebrate Ireland's rich poetic diversity, The Out of Towners features five poets whose compelling work captures a range of regional and personal perspectives: Afric McGlinchey is an award-winning poet based in West Cork. Her latest collection À la belle étoile – the odyssey of Jeanne Baré (Salmon Poetry) continues her internationally recognised body of work. Afric has received multiple Arts Council bursaries and her poetry has been translated into several languages. Lauren O'Donovan is a rising star from Cork whose recent accolades include the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award and the Fool for Poetry Chapbook Competition. Her debut Taxidermy Heart and new chapbook Superposition were both published in 2025. D'Or Seifer is a Limerick-based poet whose debut collection On Being Un/Able to Walk Through Walls was published earlier this year by Revival Press. She is the founder of Lime Square Poets and co-hosts the First Wednesday Series in Limerick, as well as co-editing Skylight 47 magazine. Flynn recently relocated from Australia to Dublin and brings an international voice to the evening. Each writer will read from their newly published collections and chapbooks, which will be available to purchase after the event. The evening will be hosted by Damien B. Menton, whose debut A Fix of Light was published by Little Island in February, has signed on for three more novels for young readers: a mix of YA and middle-grade titles with an emphasis on speculative fiction and magic realism. Wallace, whose debut chapter-book Dinosaur Pie won the junior category at the 2025 Great Reads Awards, has plans to publish three more works of fiction with neurodiverse protagonists. Illustrator Alan O'Rourke has also signed on to illustrate two sequels to Dinosaur Pie , while Wallace's fourth publication will be a picture book about an autistic girl's relationship with her grandmother. * The Week Junior Book Awards have unveiled their 2025 shortlists, celebrating the best in children's literature across 13 categories, including Irish authors Chris Haughton, Sheena Dempsey, Eilish Fisher and Dermot Flynn. Author and singer Geri Halliwell Horner, CBeebies' George Webster, presenter and actor Rhys Stephenson, and lexicographer Susie Dent are among the judges who will select the winning titles. Winners will be announced at an award ceremony in central London on September 29th. * An intense portrait of obsessive desire set in the rural Netherlands and a lushly illustrated elegy for the lost histories and identity of the Arab world have won the UK's longest-running literary awards, the James Tait Black Prizes. Lucas Rijneveld's My Heavenly Favourite won the fiction prize and the biography prize was won by Lamia Ziadé for My Great Arab Melancholy . Each prize is shared with the writers' respective translators, Michele Hutchison and Emma Ramadan. This is the first time that both prizes have been awarded to translated works and only the second time a writer and translator have been awarded a prize together in the history of the awards. The prizes were opened to translations in 2021, with authors and translators honoured equally.

New poetry: Frank McGuinness, Erica McAlpine, James Harpur and Dane Holt
'Did he know he trespassed where none should pry?' Frank McGuinness writes in Flight, 1909. In context, he's discussing 'the first flight over Lisfannon', taken by his father's father, but the poem also gestures to some of his latest collection's concerns, and obsessions. Many of the poems in The River Crana (Gallery Press, €12.95/€19.50) move towards and away from revelation and confession – they paint scenes that offer self-exposure and dwell among the risks involved in finally taking the plunge. Touch, 1976 is a sequence of poems pivoting around a brief encounter with 'the kind of guy you should not trust in bars' and its aftermath, from several perspectives (including the bed itself, in the slightly odder poem of the set). McGuinness's eye for portraiture, carnality and psychology all come to the fore in the telling, and his shifts of perspective allow for a bruised kind of empathy, 'never again looking/the length of his life and out of my own'. Elsewhere we hear about 'saviours who have lost the plot' and others 'full of remorse/and craving compassion'. It's a various book, elegiac, playful and intertextual; McGuinness is fond of and adept at the dramatic monologue form, bringing in a whole chorus of unexpected voices, ably thrown, from the ancient world, Shakespeare and Maeve Binchy at Croagh Patrick. READ MORE His eye for the telling image, too, shines out, from Armenian orchards that 'smell of pomegranates/the colour of veal' to lambs 'licking us sticky clean as honeycomb'. One of the sharpest poems, Lack of Sleep, also shows off his skill in form, and reaches for a kind of universalist timelessness – a note he also strikes in a touching version of Cavafy , Bandage, which is similarly rich in a sense of being vulnerably observant in the midst of all the action: 'I liked looking,/looking at the blood/that belonged to him'. Traditional form is the keystone for Erica McAlpine, and in Small Pointed Things (Carcanet, £11.99) she brings her scrupulous musicality to bear on the natural world, retellings of Ovid and 'the point of no return'. She's particularly good at turning scenes from nature and the quotidian into something at times almost parable-like, ruminative while never abandoning the physical or concrete realm. In Bats and Swallows, the book's opening poem, the speaker addresses someone whose nature it is 'always to side one way/or the other' while she prefers an approach where 'either, or both, hold sway'. This having it both ways instinct serves her well here, allowing her to at once debunk the idea of ideas , 'They can be elliptical/in the worst way,/or too convoluted even to say' while taking them for a walk, in carefully chiselled stanzas; to see poetry as 'a dazzle/of pure thought/about itself' while simultaneously clinging to its gravity, and craftiness. [ Paul Durcan: 'Poetry was a gift that he loved to give others' Opens in new window ] There's something of Marianne Moore to her animal poems, another poet who, like McAlpine, 'cares for delicacy of stroke', especially in her muscular, rebarbative scorpion who is 'a prizefighting champion/posing and preposterous/and plated like a tiny rhinoceros'. Throughout, in her many studies of the natural world, she aims for something more than simple taxonomy, or voyeurism: 'But life gives//itself over/purely to whatever/is near it', she writes in Kingfishers, and that sort of companionable generosity spotlights the book as a whole, whether finding fellow feeling for The Second Warthogs 'not-quite-worthy/of being seen' or the labour of the spider and its web, 'this feeling/like combing through a baby's hair'. These are poems which, however well built and apparently ordered, know that 'some things can't be straightened out' and, for all their enviable sprezzatura, legislate for the dark undertone beneath the music and 'felt the sting/of knowing we draw/from our own grave/to water what we have'. James Harpur, whose new collection is The Magic Theatre. Photograph: Alan Betson James Harpur's new collection The Magic Theatre (Two Rivers Press, £12) is steeped – at times stewed – in nostalgia for his days as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, a 'power station that burns on brains'. There's something charmingly guileless, a quality that lends it a slightly Rupert Brooke-ish idealism and helps to disarm the cynical reader who fears the experience of reading it will be akin to gatecrashing someone else's college reunion. The Brooke scent is strongest in moments of reverie, such as Summer Term – 'Begins mid spring: days of moon-white suns/The punts still smoky in their pens/And trees along the Backs pubescent green.//At first, insouciance of students, phoney war'. It isn't all blissful punting and sepia-tinged lost content, however, and the most moving – and compelling – strain of the collection is found in the relationship revealed between father and son, played out subtly and in small gestures. The divide brought about between the son's growing erudition and learning threatens to cause a schism, 'These are perhaps the final moments/Our worlds will still connect/Before I get more bookish by the month/And make him feel inadequate' but later revelations, of tenderness and more complicated elements, add depth – 'he'll let on/From the cosmos of his wheelchair/That he could only pay my fees/By gambling. Roulette in Kensington'. Friendships and relationships are formed and lost, and the world of acting entered into – the whole thing at times a meditation on performance, on and offstage, and the 'tinnitus of humiliation' which sometimes accompanies it. Self-sabotage and a perennial tendency towards running counter to his own interest's seems to stymie the narrator at several crucial moments, and aside from the odd Pooterish moment it's hard not to be won over by a poet capable of resurrecting his school days in such vivid colour, 'A gold balloon arcing from the river/Through a mist of atomised champagne'. Dane Holt's debut Father's Father's Father (Carcanet, £11.99) is full of tall tales, an often surrealist narrative instinct and a tendency to turn on a sixpence, or pull various rugs out, just as the reader starts to get comfortable. This can – at times – risk settling into a groove of sorts itself, one starts to wait for the twist or the volte-face, but throughout there's a clarity and precision to the language, and a fine knack for image and phrasemaking, which largely wins out. It's not an accident that the first line of the first poem, John Cena, about the professional wrestler, is 'Everything you do you do precisely'. Ironically, that narrator's exhortations might, in the end, be usefully applied to some of the poems here – 'f**k up once in a while, why don't you,/in a way we don't anticipate'. The best work here is that which is willing to walk the tightrope over sentiment, such as an unexpectedly moving poem riffing on the narrator's grandmother by utilising Tammy Wynette: 'how saying one thing so/exactly to someone intent on hearing//the opposite is art' or another family-related one, Humphrey Bogart, about a grandfather and his son, 'They both loved/the men Humphrey Bogart played'. There's something analogous about this idea of performing, or wearing masks, and Holt makes hay with the subject in a series of poems which use wrestling – that ultimate mix of pantomime and physicality – as their means of talking about being 'unmoored/from dramatic structure', a plight many of the masks and characters come to share. Avoidance, and variations on the theme, are at the heart of Father's Father's Father, and while the urge towards following WS Merwin's advice 'I could do anything' occasionally results in some slightly arbitrary-seeming, simile-heavy wackiness, often it leads to something original, well-seen and entertaining.
