OpenAI's chief economist says he's teaching his kids these 4 skills to prepare for the AI world

OpenAI's chief economist is teaching his kids skills to thrive in an AI-driven world.
He said he emphasizes critical thinking, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and financial numeracy.
Tech leaders are stressing the importance of AI education at home and in school.
To prepare for this world, Ronnie Chatterji is teaching his young children four skills — from critical thinking to math without calculators.
"You've gotta learn how to be a critical thinker and identify problems," Chatterji said in an episode of the OpenAI podcast published Tuesday.
The chief economist, who held senior economic policy positions in the Biden and Obama administrations, said that adaptability is the second skill he wants his children to build.
"You have to have the neuroplasticity, resilience, flexibility to be able to adapt because the world is going to change a lot," he said. "If you think about what's happening in AI, changes to our climate, changes to geopolitics, you're going to have to adapt a lot."
The third skill Chatterji said he is teaching his children is to have emotional intelligence, especially as AI begins to take over technical skills like coding.
"I can't think of a better set of skills to learn now than how to be a human because that's going to be sort of how you become a better complement for this amazing intelligence," he said.
He added that salespeople with deep technical knowledge and emotional intelligence will be key because they know how to "connect the dots" to solve problems.
A fourth skill Chatterji said he wants his children to have is "financial numeracy" and writing.
"My kids have calculators, but I still want to teach them how to do multiplication tables," he said. "Dictation software works really well. I still teach them how to write."
Still, it won't be possible to tell how much the world will change and where the next generation will work, he said.
"In terms of predicting what their job title is going to be, I don't think I have any more information than my parents did and and I think they're going to be OK," Chatterji said.
Preparing children for a world dominated by AI has become a common discussion among tech leaders.
In May, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian said that he encourages his 7yearold daughter to use AI every day, describing it as a "superpower."
Similar to Chatterji, he views AI as a tool to boost problem-solving, but said hestill emphasizes reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Last month, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, said that his kids won't be smarter than AI — and also won't be bothered that they aren't.

YouTube to begin testing a new AI-powered age verification system in the U.S.

YouTube on Wednesday will begin testing a new age-verification system in the U.S. that relies on artificial intelligence to differentiate between adults and minors, based on the kinds of videos that they have been watching. The tests initially will only affect a sliver of YouTube's audience in the U.S., but it will likely become more pervasive if the system works as well at guessing viewers' ages as it does in other parts of the world. The system will only work when viewers are logged into their accounts, and it will make its age assessments regardless of the birth date a user might have entered upon signing up. If the system flags a logged-in viewer as being under 18, YouTube will impose the normal controls and restrictions that the site already uses as a way to prevent minors from watching videos and engaging in other behavior deemed inappropriate for that age. The safeguards include reminders to take a break from the screen, privacy warnings and restrictions on video recommendations. YouTube, which has been owned by Google for nearly 20 years, also doesn't show ads tailored to individual tastes if a viewer is under 18. If the system has inaccurately called out a viewer as a minor, the mistake can be corrected by showing YouTube a government-issued identification card, a credit card or a selfie. 'YouTube was one of the first platforms to offer experiences designed specifically for young people, and we're proud to again be at the forefront of introducing technology that allows us to deliver safety protections while preserving teen privacy,' James Beser, the video service's director of product management, wrote in a blog post about the age-verification system. People still will be able to watch YouTube videos without logging into an account, but viewing that way triggers an automatic block on some content without proof of age. The political pressure has been building on websites to do a better job of verifying ages to shield children from inappropriate content since late June when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Texas law aimed at preventing minors from watching pornography online. While some services, such as YouTube, have been stepping up their efforts to verify users' ages, others have contended that the responsibility should primarily fall upon the two main smartphone app stores run by Apple and Google — a position that those two technology powerhouses have resisted. Some digital rights groups, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Center for Democracy & Technology, have raised concerns that age verification could infringe on personal privacy and violate First Amendment protections on free speech. J.P. Morgan Lifts PT on CoreWeave Ahead of Q2 Report

CoreWeave, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWV) is one of the 10 AI Stocks Making Waves on Wall Street. On August 11, JPMorgan analyst Mark Murphy raised the price target on the stock to $135.00 (from $66.00) while maintaining an Overweight rating. The analyst is optimistic on the cloud computing stock ahead of its quarterly results Tuesday after the bell. Murphy is "cautiously optimistic" on the long-term prospects of the company, particularly after it secured a five-year deal with OpenAI for artificial intelligence data centers at $11.9 billion. "Our sense is that CoreWeave's opportunities are going to get bigger and lumpier, likely to the surprise of investors, though we are not making a specific call on the upcoming Q2 results as it is likely a futile exercise to speculate on the closing of specific deals and investors should in fact expect extreme lumpiness in CoreWeave's pattern of large bookings.' Stocks chart Even though the company's long-term AI ramp is "clear" and "intact," the timing between large bookings and buildouts remain an overhang on a quarterly basis which have the potential to create "ongoing extreme volatility in CRWV shares.' Nevertheless, the firm is optimistic that CoreWeave will yield growth in the long run. "Although timing and lumpiness still give us pause and create extreme volatility, we are positive on the potential for continued momentum in CoreWeave's business pipeline, and our field work suggests long-range potential for binary-outcome transactions which are very difficult to handicap and, if successful, can drive a very surprising magnitude of outsized growth and outsized debt financing with short-term cash burn.' CoreWeave, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWV) is a cloud platform provider that provides equipment for AI and other computing purposes. While we acknowledge the potential of SOUN as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
