BAFTA TV Awards new categories explained after major ceremony scrapped
The 2025 BAFTA TV Awards will be slightly different due to a new shake-up. There will be two new categories added to the ceremony due to cuts in another event.
The new awards will come under the titles of Children's Scripted and Children's Non-Scripted, which will be included in the main show for the first time. This year the British Academy Children's Awards were cancelled and instead has been combined with the TV BAFTAs in a first for the awards.
The BAFTA Children and Young People Awards came to an end in 2023 due to a "consistent drop in entries and engagement" and have now been replaced by new categories for children's media within the main BAFTA ceremonies. According to BAFTA, the move was part of a larger rebrand and initiative under the "Young BAFTA" banner. Sara Putt, BAFTA chair, said: "We are evolving the way we celebrate children's film and television to ensure our support of the children's media sector is impactful, relevant and sustainable.
"The new Young BAFTA Advisory Group, to be led by BAFTA board-member and industry expert Andrew Miller, will align BAFTA's long-standing support of children's media sector with our charitable mission to bring their excellent work to wider public attention and nurture the next generation of talent.
"We are grateful for the generosity of time and expertise of BAFTA's former children's committee, for their tireless work to-date and their support of this next chapter."
Alan Cumming will be presenting the event this year for the first time. The star is best known for his job hosting The Traitors US as well as starring in GoldenEye and The Good Wife. His most recent work includes being in Doctor Who.
When Alan was first announced as the presenter, Emma Baehr, executive director of awards & content at BAFTA, said: "We're delighted that Alan Cumming will be hosting this year's BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises.
"He will definitely bring a playful sense of mischief and fun to the ceremony, so audiences should expect the unexpected at Britain's biggest celebration of TV on Sunday 11th May.
"The sheer quality, innovation, and breadth of talent in British television in front of and behind the camera is second to none, and we look forward to honouring and celebrating these talented people at our upcoming awards ceremonies."
The event will take place in the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 11 May, 2025. It is available to watch from home from 7pm as it airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The programme will air for two hours will plenty of famous faces up for awards. You can watch all of the pre-show red carpet action on YouTube where comedians Suzi Ruffell and Tom Allen will be hosting the stream.

It was behaviour the Irishman says he's "never" seen from the Rocket before. On Friday, O'Sullivan, 49, once again etched his name into snooker folklore, becoming the first competitor ever to make two maximum breaks in the same match, achieved in his Saudi Masters semi-final against Chris Wakelin. The first of the two came right in the opener of the best-of-11 - and to underline his dominance, he added breaks of 134 and 142, dazzling fans with his consistency and flair. But it was his rare exuberance off the table that caught Doherty's eye. "I don't think he has ever been like that after a match," he said to the Express, via Betway. "When he came into the studio, we were having a good laugh with him, Ronnie was happy, was laughing his head off and normally he downplays everything, but he seemed really in a good place which was great to see." The Irishman was quick to praise the magnitude of the double 147 achievement itself. "They were just incredible," he said. "Just to witness that live and for it to be on TV was just unbelievable, it was unprecedented. It was historic and was absolutely amazing. But it is what Ronnie O'Sullivan does and it was an incredible best of 11 [frames], two 147 breaks, a 134 and a 142." Equally striking to Doherty was Ronnie's delight with his new piece of kit. "He was really happy with his new cue as well. I think the guy who made the cue for him, Sunny Akani, is going to be very busy over the next few months making cues for all different people. It was great to see him in good form, good spirits and playing so well." Recalling Ronnie's dramatic Saudi final against Neil Robertson, where he battled back from 7-2 down only to lose 10-9, he said: "The way he played and the level of which he played in, even in the final to come back from 7-2 down against Neil Robertson to go 9-8 up, I thought he was unlucky and Neil Robertson did really well to win 10-9. "But I thought Ronnie was unlucky with the couple of splits that he had and he could have won the game 10-8 or 10-9 because he was in the last frame as well. But Ronnie can go on for another few years and could even continue until he is 60 if he wants to." As someone who repeatedly locked cues with the Rocket during the '90s and early 2000s, Doherty believes an eighth world title remains O'Sullivan's great motivation. "I think Ronnie wants to win that elusive eighth world title and it will be high on his priority," he explained. The Saudi event you could see how much it means to him; he was banging the table with frustration when things weren't going well which is a good sign that he really wants to win it. "He loves the big tournaments like the Saudi one, the Masters, the UK and the World Championship, which is his main priority. Ronnie loves winning and is a winner, he's always won and wants to keep winning and stay at the top for as long as he can." From his own experience of trying to stop O'Sullivan, Doherty emphasised the challenge of blocking out the Rocket's aura. "When you played Ronnie, you used to try not to think about who you were playing," he said. "I think that's what was so great about Neil Robertson, he focused on his own game and didn't worry about who was in the other chair or with it being Ronnie. It was an honour for him to play Ronnie, but it also inspired him and that's the attitude you need when you play against these great players." With O'Sullivan seemingly embracing the sport with fresh enthusiasm, Doherty believes snooker fans will be seeing plenty of Rocket magic for years to come. His verdict was clear: when Ronnie's in this frame of mind, absolutely anything is possible.

Huge U&Dave update as TV station announces first original drama series
Bosses behind the U&Dave channel have confirmed that the network will soon be releasing its first ever drama series which is set to follow dozens of police detectives The U&Dave channel has announced its first ever original drama series - a new high pace police crime series called Hit Point. Described as 'an adrenaline-charged blend of high-stakes crime thriller and sizzling romantic drama' it follows thirty something detectives Leo and Bella as their latest case pulls them into a dangerous West London underworld. On the hunt for answers, the lines between their personal and professional lives blur with every twist and betrayal. The script also hopes to mix razor-sharp humour with heart-stopping action. The six-part series will also be available to stream on U when it comes out next year. BAFTA-winner Howard Overman has written the drama, and he said: 'We are all excited at Urban Myth Films to be teaming up with UKTV on Hit Point. It's been a joy to create a show that blends high-octane thrills with heart, humour and a love story at its core. Emmerdale reveals what clue Mack finds about John that exposes ITV soap killer 'We have a talented crew of industry experts bringing Leo and Bella's world to life, and I can't wait for audiences to dive into the twists, turns and surprises we have in store.' Helen Perry, head of drama commissioning for UKTV, added: 'Hit Point is a cop show like no other. With his singular voice, Howard has crafted a tense crime thriller that's driven by a characterful will-they, won't-romance. It's a distinctive genre mash-up, full of heart, humour and action-packed sequences. "It's the perfect first scripted drama commission for U&Dave and U, and a marker of our ambition for drama on the channel.' Hit Point is the first original drama commission for U&Dave, but just the latest scripted drama for UKTV. In February this year, the network's streaming service U and free-to-air channel U&Drama launched the reimagined Bergerac to an average of 2.4million viewers. Starring Damien Moloney in the title role and written by Toby Whithouse, Bergerac will return for a second series next year. U&Dave is UKTV's free-to-air entertainment channel, home to original entertainment commissioning like Will & Ralf Should Know Better, Guy Martin: Proper Jobs, Silence is Golden and BAFTA-winning Big Zuu's Big Eats. All U&Dave programming can be found on U, UKTV's free streaming service with over 9000 hours of content from UKTV's free-to-air channels U&Dave, U&Drama, U&Yesterday and U&W, as well as programming exclusive to U.
