Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro lead Netflix's latest No. 1 movie — and this comedy-drama is full of charm
'The Intern' landed on the platform just two days ago (June 22), and it's already surpassed the new animated original 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' and Gerard Butler's action-thriller 'Plane.'
It's actually nice to see this comedy-drama getting some love again, especially since it didn't really win critics over back in 2015.
For a little context, 'The Intern' follows an unlikely pairing between a successful, driven woman and a seasoned, wise older man who cross paths in a way that ends up changing both their lives. Sounds pretty charming, right?
I can confirm that it is. And anyone seeking comfort food in the form of a movie will find something to enjoy in this one.
So, if you've seen 'The Intern' suddenly pop up in your recommendations, here's everything you need to know before adding it to your Netflix watchlist.
'The Intern' follows Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro), a 70-year-old widower who finds retirement less fulfilling than he expected. Looking to re-enter the workforce, Ben lands a senior internship at an innovative online fashion start-up run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), a driven young entrepreneur.

As Ben navigates his new role, he quickly becomes a trusted presence among the younger staff, offering wisdom and a calm demeanor. Jules, initially skeptical about having an older intern, gradually comes to rely on Ben's experience and steady support as she manages the pressures of running the company and balancing her personal life.
Throughout his internship, Ben builds genuine friendships with various employees and becomes an unexpected mentor to Jules. His old-school manners and thoughtful advice bring a fresh perspective to the modern office.
Meanwhile, Jules struggles with the demands of her expanding business and family, and Ben's steady presence provides quiet strength behind the scenes.
While 'The Intern' received mixed reviews from critics, I think it still offers meaningful insights, especially in today's world where older generations are frequently overlooked or underestimated for being out of touch or struggling with new technology.
Nancy Meyers, the writer and director celebrated for her women-centered romantic comedies like 'What Women Want' and 'It's Complicated,' delivers a charming and clever movie featuring standout performances from Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.
Ben, the widower and retired executive, applies for a senior intern position at About The Fit, a fast-growing e-commerce fashion start-up in Brooklyn. Assigned to work with CEO Jules, Ben's initial role is to assist her with various tasks. But as you can predict, their professional relationship deepens into a meaningful friendship. It's this heartwarming connection that takes 'The Intern' out of average territory.
'The Intern' actually turned out to be more delightful and thoughtful about gender issues than its trailers suggested. There's charm, a surprising amount of visual appeal, and sometimes humorous escapism.
As mentioned, this comedy-drama garnered pretty average reviews. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 60% from critics and a slightly higher rating of 73% from audiences.
The site's critics consensus reads: 'The Intern doesn't do enough with its timely premise, but benefits from the unorthodox chemistry of its talented leads.' This is something I can agree with.
Despite the somewhat mixed reviews, 'The Intern' is an easy watch. Meyers proves once again why she's a master at delivering cozy, polished movies that feel like a warm hug on screen. It's pure comfort food.
The story itself moves at a gentle pace, which includes a small adventure to erase a wayward email, a visit to San Francisco, and plenty of moments showing Ben chauffeuring Jules around New York.
While none of these events are particularly dramatic, they're all enjoyable to watch. Even though the movie's message feels a bit muddled at times, it doesn't take away from how entertaining the film is overall.
You can stream 'The Intern' on Netflix now. Otherwise, see what else is new on Netflix in June 2025.

Jenna Dewan upstaged by baby daughter Rhiannon in adorable dance video: Watch
Jenna Dewan isn't the only star in her household. The actress and dancer, who shares two children with fiancé Steve Kazee, shared a video of herself spending quality time with her 1-year-old daughter Rhiannon in a July 31 Instagram post. The couple welcomed their baby girl on June 14, 2024. The adorable clip first showed Dewan, 44, getting her groove on to the Carl Carlton hit "She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)." However, Dewan's dance video was quickly hijacked by Rhiannon's silly antics. The baby lifted her shirt, inadvertently showing off her tummy, as her mother got into the high-energy choreography. "Rhiannon you scene stealer," Dewan captioned the post. Baby Dewan's overshadowing power was confirmed in the comments section, as Dewan's Instagram followers gushed over Rhiannon's cuteness. "THE BELLY LIFT TOOK ME OUT😭," @omgitssophh wrote, while @deniselowe6 commented, "Your back up dancer stole the show🙌😂❤️❤️❤️❤️" Dewan paid tribute to Rhiannon and her dancing charisma in a June 14 Instagram post celebrating the baby's first birthday. "Rhiannon you are the greatest gift ever and you make everything and everyone better with your presence," wrote Dewan alongside a series of mother-daughter photos. "You are the sweetest, most bewitching, charismatic snuggler and the way you dance to every single song you hear especially your sister's favorite K-pop songs and your brother's favorite Kendrick Lamar songs is also part of you weaving your magic 🥹❤️" She concluded: "Thank you for being the best baby ever and the absolute best blessing I could ever imagine! We love you so much you baby girl!" Rhiannon is one of three children of the "Step Up" star. Dewan also shares a son, 5-year-old Callum, with Kazee. Dewan's first child, 12-year-old daughter Everly Tatum, is from her former marriage to actor Channing Tatum. Jenna Dewan's daughter Everly tags along for 'Live with Kelly and Mark' cohosting gig For Dewan, Take Your Daughter to Work Day is a must. The actress put on her hosting hat when she was tapped to fill in for Kelly Ripa on the Aug. 5 episode of "Live with Kelly and Mark." Dewan took fans behind the scenes via her Instagram stories with clips from her appearance on the ABC morning talk show. "This is the most fun day for me. I get to come and do this great, fun job and see all you guys," said Dewan in one video, seemingly addressing the studio audience. Dewan's "Kelly and Mark" entourage included her daughter Everly. The "Superman & Lois" alum shared several photos of the pair having fun backstage, including one shot of Everly watching her mother cohost from the sidelines. Dewan also posted a playful dance video of the mother-daughter duo hamming it up. "Been bringing this one to work with me since she was just two months old when we were filming Witches of East End," Dewan wrote alongside a photo of herself and Everly embracing on set.

Netflix's Next Sports Epic: The Cowboys, Jerry Jones, And A Dynasty That Defined The NFL
The Dallas Cowboys have never been just another football team. Arguably more so than any other franchise in the NFL, the Cowboys are a cultural force and a perfect manifestation of America's obsession with what happens on the gridiron. That legacy gets the deep-dive treatment this month in Netflix's new docuseries "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys" — a story about ambition, swagger, and the high-stakes bets that built a football empire. Dropping this weekend (on August 9), the series chronicles Jerry Jones' 1989 purchase of the then-struggling Cowboys and how that gamble transformed the NFL forever. Under Jones' watch, the Cowboys became not only three-time Super Bowl champions in the '90s but also the most valuable sports franchise on the planet. The series blends never-before-seen footage with interviews from players, coaches, and even fans to tell the story of how calculated risks paid off in spectacular fashion. Basically, the series is built around the Cowboys' inexorable march toward dominance — a period when they went from underperformers to winning multiple Super Bowls. Directed by the Emmy-winning team behind "Wild Wild Country," Netflix's docuseries unpacks how Jones reshaped not just a team, but the entire business of sports. Read more: 6 TV Shows That Are So Good, I Wish I Could Wipe My Memory And Enjoy Them Again For The First Time America's Team: The Gambler And His Cowboys Chronicles An NFL Powerhouse Jones' ownership approach wasn't just about winning games; it was about building a brand. Essentially, he risked his fortune to buy the team and went on to oust a legendary coach. Jones also revolutionized marketing and revenue streams through aggressive sponsorship deals and stadium innovations. This is a business story, in other words, as much as it is one about sports. Also in the docuseries, viewers will hear from players like Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Deion Sanders, while head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer recount the highs and lows of steering the team through an era of intense competition and media scrutiny. The series likewise features insights from big-name fans like former President George W. Bush and Nike co-founder Phil Knight, who reflect on the Cowboys' place in American culture. All of that, combined with archival footage, provides fascinating insight about "America's Team," one whose driving force can probably be summed up best by a quote from former quarterback Roger Staubach: "There are no traffic jams along the extra mile." With the franchise now worth more than $10 billion, "America's Team: The Gamble and His Cowboys" shows exactly how the groundwork for that success was laid in the '90s. And when you're finished watching, don't forget about the halftime performers: Netflix also has "America's Sweethearts," a docuseries looking at the Dallas Cowboys cheer squad that just returned for a second season.
