KUALA TERENGGANU, 25 April (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in Terengganu has disposed of nine foreign fishing vessels to be used as artificial reefs in line with the sustainability approach in marine resource management.
MMEA deputy director-general (Logistics) Vice Admiral Datuk Saiful Lizan Ibrahim said all nine vessels were sunk between September 2022 and recently, totalling RM15 million.
"Additionally, during the same period, the Terengganu MMEA also detained 40 foreign fishermen who trespassed into state waters.
"It also involved the seizure of vessels, equipment, and marine products with a total value of RM60 million," he said after attending the handover ceremony for the Terengganu MMEA director between Maritime First Admiral Mohd Khairulanuar Abdul Majid@Razali and his successor Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang here today.
Meanwhile, Saiful Lizan reminded local boat operators who ferry squid fishermen to ensure that they always have sufficient safety equipment and report their movements to the MMEA to facilitate rescue operations in the event of an unwanted situation.
He said his team would conduct continuous monitoring with a greater focus on the safety of those who enjoy this activity in the ocean through the operation of assets and personnel 24/7.
In Terengganu, the squid fishing season has started at the beginning of this month and is expected to last until September, with the locations where squid fishing is concentrated being Pantai Marang, Pantai Teluk Bidara, Pulau Kapas as well as Pulau Redang.

Gerik bus crash: Bus was speeding before crash, claims survivor

PETALING JAYA: The bus involved in the recent crash in Gerik, early on Monday (June 6) morning was speeding, claims a survivor. "I was dozing off, half asleep. Suddenly, I was startled because the bus was going so fast. I closed my eyes for a moment, and suddenly the bus had overturned," Nurrin Najwa Mohd Azmi told Malay newsportal The 20-year-old student was one of 48 people involved in the tragic accident on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, that claimed 15 lives. "My seat was in the middle left section, the side where the bus fell. At that moment, I was the only one conscious. I saw that everyone else had fainted. "I cried because there was no one there at that time. I couldn't find my friend who was sitting next to me. It was dark," she said. According to the second-year Chemistry Education student, she managed to get out of the bus after being helped by two individuals at the scene. She recalled that many of the victims were still unconscious when she tried to escape. "My leg was stuck near the seat, I couldn't get out. So I tried on my own until two people came to help. "I forced myself to exit through the broken window. It was hard to pass through because I was afraid of stepping on (the victims). "After getting out, two men helped me and told me to inform my parents about the incident," she recounted, still in shock. Nurrin added that she was taken to Gerik Hospital, where she was confirmed to have only suffered minor injuries and has been allowed to return home. "My injuries aren't severe. I have injuries to my head and shoulder. The doctor said my head hit hard, there's swelling. I also had an X-ray on my shoulder, there's a slight issue, but it's not broken. "I was discharged this morning and picked up by my father, and am now on my way home to Setiu," Nurrin added. She mentioned that she boarded the bus from Jerteh with a fare of RM60. The bus was reportedly chartered by a group of students from Jerteh to Tanjung Malim in Perak after returning from celebrating Aidiladha.

NFA in Teoh Beng Hock case: DAP seeks clarification from A-G

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has called on Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to provide a detailed explanation for his decision not to pursue criminal charges in the case involving the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock. In a joint statement issued by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo and secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the party expressed disappointment over the Attorney-General's decision to classify the case as "no further action" (NFA), despite previous court rulings that pointed to foul play. "The Attorney-General must explain why he believes there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Teoh Beng Hock's death, especially in light of the findings of the Court of Appeal and civil proceedings," the statement read. According to DAP, the case was referred to the Attorney-General by police on May 21 and was subsequently classified as NFA. A letter dated May 30 was later sent to the family's legal representatives, stating that the investigations did not uncover sufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution. Teoh, who was a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, died in 2009 while in the custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). "DAP has been consistently calling for accountability in the case. "The party previously assembled a legal team that initiated an inquest into Teoh's death, which revealed bruising on his neck. "However, the 2011 Coroner's Court returned an open verdict." Subsequent legal challenges saw the Court of Appeal overturn the Coroner's decision, concluding in 2014 that Teoh's death resulted from "an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigation." In a related civil suit, the government and MACC admitted liability for negligence, resulting in a RM600,000 settlement to Teoh's family, along with RM60,000 in costs. "These court decisions form a solid basis for further investigation to identify those responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death. "Whilst the duty to investigate the case and to identify those responsible lies with the police, it is for the Attorney-General to decide his next step based on that investigation," the statement added. The party also voiced its support for the family's reported move to challenge the NFA decision via a judicial review. "We call upon the Attorney-General to reconsider his decision and move forward with pressing charges against those responsible, without further delay."
